  • MFL method is a qualitative inspection tool and is a reliable, fast and economical NDT method. The application of MFL method to the inspection of storage tank floor plates has been shown to be a viable means. Examination of tank floors previously depended primarily upon ultrasonic test methods that required slow and painstaking application. Therefor most ultrasonic inspection of storage tank has been limited to spot testing only. Our NDE group have developed magnetic flux leakage system to overcome limitation of ultrasonic test. The developed system consists of magnetic yoke, array sensor, crawler and software. It is proved that the system is able to detect artificial flaw like 3.2mm diameter, 1.2mm depth in 6mm thick steel plate.

  • Abstract - Linear Synchronous Motor has a large airgap comparing with rotary-type motor and especially, Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor(PM-LSM) which uses permanent magnet as a magnetic field, has a very large effective magnet airgap owing to permanent magnet structure. Accordingly, in case of 2-D analysis of the motor, the analysis error becomes large because leakage flux by which normal direction of the analysis region can not be considered, In this paper, the characteristic of PM-LSM for Maglev vehicle is analyzed exactly by 3-D Finite Element Method(3-D FEM). As the result, the effect of lateral-direction airgap magnetic flux density distribution on the analysis precision has been investigated and the motor characteristics according to primary motor parameter have been also made clear quantitatively. The accuracy of 3-D FEM has been confirmed by comparing the calculated results with the experimental results.

  • Recently large size color TV and computer monitor are very popular and a lot techniques are being developed to get a high quality picture on the screen through reducing the convergence error among the red, green and blue beams and achieving a high focusing. One of the techniques is considering the mutual effects of the components of the Brown tube. The magnetic deflection yoke, especially, stands immediately next to the electron gun and generates the leakage magnetic fields at the electron gun which affects the trajectories of the electron beams inside the gun. Hence a shield cup made of thin conducting plate is located at the end of electron gun in order to shield the leakage flux from the deflection yoke. Since the red, green and blue beams are placed unsymmetrically the shielding effects of the shield cup on the beams are not same and eddy current controller, made of thin conducting plate, is auxiliary placed inside the shield cup. In this paper a transient magnetic field analysis algorithm is developed using boundary element method, and applied to the analysis of the shielding effects of the eddy current controller of shield cup in an electron gun.

  • In this paper, a detuning factor (DeFac) method is proposed to design the key parameters for optimizing the transfer power and efficiency of an Inductively Coupled Power Transfer (ICPT) system with primary-secondary side compensation. Depending on the robustness of the system, the DeFac method can guarantee the stability of the transfer power and efficiency of an ICPT system within a certain range of resistive-capacitive or resistive-inductive loads. A MATLAB-Simulink model of a ICPT system was built to assess the system's main evaluation criteria, namely its maximum power ratio (PR) and efficiency, in terms of different approaches. In addition, a magnetic field simulation model was built using Ansoft to specify the leakage flux and current density. Simulation results show that both the maximum PR and efficiency of the ICPT system can reach almost 70% despite the severe detuning imposed by the DeFac method. The system also exhibited low levels of leakage flux and a high current density. Experimental results confirmed the validity and feasibility of an ICPT system using DeFac-designed parameters.

  • Remote Field Eddy Current Testing (RFECT), one of the ways which is a nondestructive testing using electromagnetic fields, can make up for Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) weaknesses and general Eddy Current Testing (ECT) weaknesses which is an occurrence of a huge friction force or disadvantage of detecting defects on the outer wall. So many of institutes and laboratories have studied on RFECT for the past 50 years. But There is a lack of discussion about a study on eddy current and magnetic field distributions in a pipe wall and designing of RFECT exciter coil. In this paper, eddy current and magnetic field distributions in a pipe wall and influence of altering variables are analyzed. Also, the optimal design algorithm about the RFECT Exciter coil are proposed, and influence on defect signals caused by alteration of its shape is analyzed.

  • A large number of wire rope has been used in various industries such as cranes and elevators. When wire used for a long time, wire defects occur such as disconnection and wear. It leads to an accident and damage to life and property. To prevent this accident, we proposed a wire rope fault detection system in this paper. We constructed the whole system choosing the leakage fault detection method using hall sensors and the method is simple and easy maintenance characteristics. Fault diagnosis and analysis were available through analog filter and amplification process. The amplified signal is transmitted to the computer through the data acquisition system. This signal could be obtained improved results through the digital filter process.

  • The paper reports an improvement method on torque ripples of multi-pole interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) applied to a traction motor for hybrid electric vehicles. In the case of multi-pole IPMSM, the magnetic flux generated by a permanent magnet tends to leak through the bridge of the rotor without a link with stator windings. The slit design on the rotor surface was proposed to reduce torque rippling and increase the output power by reducing the leakage flux. Two design parameters for the slit are suggested for optimal design using the response surface method. As an analysis method, the 2D finite element method (FEM) was applied to consider magnetic saturation effect.

  • The magnetic Hut leakage (MFL) type nondestructive testing (NDT) method is widely used to detect corrosion and defects, mechanical deformation of the underground gas pipelines. The object pipeline is magnetically saturated by the magnetic system with permanent magnet and yokes. Because of the strong magnetic field enough to saturate the pipe, there could be distortion of the sensing signals because of the magnetization of the pipeline itself, To detect the defects precisely, the sensing signals are need to be compensated to eliminate the distortions coming from the media hysteresis. In this paper, the magnetizations of the pipeline in MFL type NDT are analyzed by Preisach model and 3D FEM. The distortions of the sensing signals are analyzed.

  • Nondestructive testing (NDT) by using the electromagnetic methods are useful for detecting cracks on the surface and subsurface of the metal. However, when the material contains both ferromagnetic and paramagnetic materials, it is difficult for NDT to detect and analyze cracks using this method. In addition the existence of a partial ferromagnetic material can be incorrectly characterized as a crack in the several cases. On the other hand a large crack has sometimes been misunderstood as a partially magnetized region. Inconel 600 is an important material in atomic energy plant. A nickel film is coated when a crack a appears on an Inconel substrate. Cracks are difficult to detect on the combined material of an Inconel substrate with a nickel film, which are paramagnetic and ferromagnetic material respectively. In this paper, a scan type magnetic camera, which uses a complex induced current-magnetic flux leakage (CIC-MFL) method as a magnetic source and a linearly integrated Hall sensor array (LIHaS) on a wafer as the magnetic sensors, was examined for its ability to detect cracks on the combined material. The evaluation probability of a crack is discussed. In addition the detection probability of the minimum depth was reported.

  • MFL(magnetic flux leakage) inspection is a general method of non-destructive evaluation(NDE) of underground gas pipelines. Pipelines are magnetized by permanent magnets when MFL PIG(pipeline inspection gauge) gets through them. If defects or corrosions exist in pipelines, effective thickness is changed and thus variation of leakage flux occurs. The leakage flux signals detected by hall-sensors are analyzed to characterize defect's geometries such as length, width, depth, and so on. This paper presents several methods for estimating defect's length using MFL signals and their performances are compared for real defects carved in KOGAS pipeline simulation facility. It is found that 80% and 90% of minimum values for axial and peak values for radial signals respectively show the best performance in the point of length estimation error.
