  • To develope a technique for efficiently managing fertilizer for cucumber, a quick test method to quantify nitrate content in soil solution and leaf petiole juice using a simple instrument was investigated. Among the nitrate analyzing instruments such as compact ion meter, nitrate ion meter, and test strip with reflectometer, the paper test-strip used in conjunction with a hand-held reflectometer was most closely correlated with ion chromatography method in nitrate content, and then it would be suggested with a tool that a farmer can use rapidly, conveniently and accurately for nitrate analysis in a field. Nitrate content in soil solution collected by porous cup was very variable on the lapsed time after drip irrigation and the sampling positions such as soil depth and the distance from dripper. As a result, a significant correlation between nitrate contents of soil solutions and 2M KCl soil extract was not found. However, nitrate content in soil solution extracted with a volume basis (soil:water=1:2) showed the highly significant correlation with that in 2M KCl extract. Nitrate contents of cucumber leaf petiole juices was greatly different between upper and lower leaves. Eleven to sixteen positioned-leaf would be a proper sampling position to determine nitrate content in leaf petiole for evaluating nutrient state by plant tissue analysis. From the secondary regression equations between nitrate contents of soil and petiole juice and the yield of cucumber, nitrate levels for real time diagnosis were estimated as $400mg\;l^{-1}$ soil solution by porous cup. $300mg\;l^{-1}$ in a soil volume extraction, and $1400mg\;l^{-1}$ in petiole juice from spring to summer season. In addition, the maximum yield of cucumber fruit in pot test was obtained in nitrate $1500mg\;l^{-1}$ level of petiole juice, which was similar to nitrate $1400mg\;l^{-1}$ in greenhouse trial.

  • To investigate differences in Cd and Zn contents of paddy soils and rice plants polluted by the municipal and industrial waste water in the Mangyeong River Area, soil and plant samples were collected at several distances from the main inlet and at different depths of the soil. Soil samples were extracted with $4M-HNO_3$ and plant samples were digested with a mixture of $HNO_3$and $HClO_4$for analyzing heavy metals by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The contents of Cd and Zn in soils ranged from 0.38 to 1.17 and from 33.8 to 464.6mg kg^{-1}, respectively. The average Cd level in 1990 was less than that in 1982, but the Zn level in 1990 was higher than that in 1982 in general. No variation in Cd contents was observed in soils at the different distances from the source of waste water, but Zn contents in soils were lower with the increasing distances from the source of waste water. A significant correlation was observed among Cd content, OM, available silicate, CEC and $Ca^{++}$. Similar results existed among Zn content of 1982, OM and $Ca^{++}$. The Cd content in subsurface soils of 1992 was significantly correlated with Zn, Cu, and Pb in soils, and the Zn content in soils was significantly correlated with the Cu and Pb in soils, regardless of years. The Cd content in leaf blades of rice was more than seven times higher than that in brown rice. The Zn content in rice was higher than that in leaf blades and in panicle axis. The Cd content in panicle axis and the Zn content in all parts of rice were correlated with Zn, Cu and Pb contents in soils. The Cd and Zn contents in brown rice ranged from 0.10 to 0.90mg $kg^{-1}$ and from 4.2 to 95.9mg $kg^{-1}$ in the Mangyeong River Area, respectively.

  • Effect of tow or three week potassium depression on nutrient contents in two rice varieties, Jinheung (a leading local) and IR 667-Suwon 214 (high yielding tropical line), was investigated at various growth stages in water culture system for the nutritional elucidation of potassium top dressing. According to potassium content, potassium ratio beween leaf blade and leaf sheath plus culm, relative potassium content ($-k/+k{\times}100$) and balance between potassium and other nutrients (K/N or K/Ca+Mg) it could be concluded as follows: 1) Rice plants have three sensitive growth stages to potassium stress in the orther of ear formation stage (20 to 30 days before heading) early tillering (15 to 25 days after transplanting) and at heading. 2) IR 667 is more sensitive to potassium stress than Jinheung, especially in early stage due to lower uptake of potassium. 3) Leaf sheath of IR 667 appears to have a role as potassium reservoir to greater extent than that of Jinheung.

  • In this study, the nutritional value, total polyphenol content, total flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity of freeze-dried Cedrela sinensis tender leaf powder were examined. Among the nutritional values, the crude protein, crude fiber, calcium, and potassium were abundantly present in Cedrela sinensis. The Cedrela sinensis powder was extracted with two solvents, 70% ethanol and distilled water (D.W.), to evaluate its functional properties. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were measured in the two different extracts, and the extracts were screened for their potential antioxidant activities using tests such as DPPH radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and ABTS radical scavenging assay. Although both extracts exhibited good antioxidant activities against trolox, the ethanolic extract exhibited higher antioxidant activities than the D.W. extract. These results indicated that the Cedrela sinensis powder is a high-valued food ingredient and the extraction with 70% ethanol will be useful as a nutritional source with natural antioxidant activities.

  • Sulforaphane is a sulfur-containing substance found in large amounts in cruciferous plants and has been reported in several studies to have anticancer effects. Kale is a representative cruciferous plant known as a superfood and is widely used as an ingredient in various dishes. In this study, in order to investigate a cultivation method for increasing kale's content of sulforaphane, kale was treated with geraniol or methyl jasmonate and water stressed during cultivation using a aeroponic culture system in a fully enclosed plant factory. Geraniol or methyl jasmonate were sprayed on the kale's leaf surface once a day for 2 days, and water deprivation stress was conducted for 3 days after 7 days from first treatment day. No difference in growth between control, geraniol, methyl jasmonate treated groups were observed during cultivation. The study results showed that the kale sulforaphane content increased by 60% in the group treated with geraniol compared to the control group and that the group treated with water deprivation stress in addition to geraniol showed a significant increase of 414%. These results show that kale with an increased content of sulforaphane can be grown and that geraniol can be a good research material for increasing the content of functional substances in plants.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the cleaning effect of sesame leaf, the sterilization effect and physicochemical properties, treated with various electrolyzed water. Initial physicochemical properties could be kept more than 1 month in electrolyzed oxidizing water(EW-1) of diaphragm type and 15 days in electrolyzed water(EW-2 and EW-3) of non-diaphragm system, there was no significant difference by storage temperature. 4 kinds of microorganism (initial total counts, $10^7\~10^9$ CFU/mL) were sterilized within $0.5\~1$ minutes by electrolyzed water. In fresh sesame leaves, total viable cell count and coliform group in the treatment of electolyzed water were decreased to about $2\~3$ log scale comparing non-treated ones. Especially Bacillus cereus was not detected until 13th day when treated with EW-l. Decaying ratio of sesame leaf appears on day 6 of storage in the untreated but the treatments of electrolyzed water has no sign until day 10 of storage. Change in color difference(${\Delta}E$) during storage was observed the treatments of electrolyzed low-alkaline water(EW-2) and electrolyzed neutral water(EW-3) were very desirable at the level $1\~2$ after day 13 of storage comparative to the untreated Change of Chlorophyll content was biggest decreased to 6.8 $mg\%$ on the untreated and decreased least to 8.35 $mg\%$ on EW-3 treated group on 13th day from initial value of $9.0\~10.3\;mg\%$ The overall sensory evaluation appeared most acceptable in the treatments of EW-2 and EW-3.

  • This study evaluated the impact of blanching pak choi stems and leaves in various solutions (distilled water, 2% NaCl, and 2% citric acid) at 100℃ on their quality characteristics. The highest stem heating loss was observed in the sodium chloride solution (S-NB) at 15.10% (p<0.001), and the highest leaf heating loss was in L-NB at 11.44% (p<0.001). No significant variation was found in the moisture content of both stems and leaves. Relative to the control, the L value (lightness) of the stem decreased while the b value (yellowness) increased (p<0.05). In the leaves, the a value (redness/greenness) and b value increased in L-CB, whereas they decreased in other groups (p<0.05). S-NB exhibited the highest true retention (TR) of total polyphenol content (TPC) in stems (p<0.01) and the highest TR of total flavonoid content (TFC) as well (p<0.001). For leaves, the highest TR of TPC and TFC was in L-WB (p<0.001). In terms of antioxidant activity, S-NB in stems and L-WB in leaves showed the highest scavenging activity measured by DPPH and ABTS+ assays (p<0.001). Microorganisms were absent in all pretreatment groups but present in the control. The results suggest that blanching pak choi stems in 2% NaCl solution and leaves in water optimally preserves biologically active compounds and nutrients.

  • A green house experiment was conducted to investigate the performance of Chinese cabbage and radish and changes in soil chemical properties after application of different amounts of simulated acid rain (SAR). About 10mm of normal water (pH 6.0), 5mm of SAR followed by 5mm of normal water, and 10mm of SAR were applied 24 times at the two-day intervals. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Visible symptoms were dark brown, red brown, or grey brown leaf spots, reduced leaf size, or some times wrinked leaves in both crops. The visible symptoms started after the third application of SAR. The degree of damages was greater as the amounts and the number of times of SAR application increased. 2. Chlorophyll contents of SAR applied leaves decreased as the amounts of SAR application increased. 3. As the amounts of SAR increased, length, diameter, and fresh weight of Chinese cabbage heads and radish roots decreased. 4. In both crops sulfur content increased, while calcium content decreased as the amounts of SAR increased. Contents of N, P, K, and Mg were not significnatly affected by the amounts of SAR. 5. SAR decreased soil pH and exchangeable cations (Ca, Mg, K), while increased soil sulfur content.

  • Fifty-seven extracts from flower, leaf and stem of Agastache rugosa O. Kuntze were prepared by varing extraction conditions: solvents (hot water, ethanol and NaCl solution); temp.$(60,\;80\;and\;100^{\circ}C)$ and solvent ratios (10 to 35 times per material). Lipid content of leaf was 9.54% and protein content of the flower where the essential amino acids were most abundant among all parts was 16.8%. Among six minerals (Na. Ca, Fe, P, K and Mg) detected from all parts of the plant, the content of K was the highest. Extraction yield rated higher in odor of water, ethanol and NaCl solution, respectively and the extractions reached eqilibrium in about 15 to 20 min, regardless of extraction conditions. pH values of all extracted solvents maintained neutral upon extraction and a few free sugars in forms of glucose and fructose were detected from ethanol extracts. Colors and organoleptic characteristics of the extracts which determine the properties of final products varied with extraction conditions.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the chlorophyll content, photosynthetic characteristics, and growth characteristics of Aster koraiensis and Dendranthema zawadskii var. latiloba according to shading treatment. A. koraiensis and D. zawadskii grew in four different shading treatment plots (0%, 50%, 75% and 95% of full sunlight) for experiments. It was found that as the shading level increased, the total chlorophyll content increased and dark respiration decreased in both A. koraiensis and D. zawadskii, indicating that A. koraiensis and D. zawadskii increase the utilization efficiency for photosynthesis under low light conditions. In addition, as the shading level increased, the net apparent quantum yield increased, resulting in the highest in the 95% shading plot, but the highest photosynthetic rate, water use efficiency, and leaf mass per area (LMA) were shown in the control group than in the shading treatments. The results showed that A. koraiensis and D. zawadskii are heliophytes showing plasticity to light, and if the light is restricted to continue to shade, it may be detrimental to growth. For healthy growth, it is considered suitable to grow A. koraiensis under full light conditions, and D. zawadskii under the light condition that blocks 0-50% of full sunlight.
