  • "Boseog" is a new japonica rice cultivar developed from the three way cross of Kinuhikari//HR19621AC6/Sobibyeo and registered by the rice breeding team of Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA in 2008. This cultivar has about 110 days of growth duration from transplanting to harvesting in northern plain, northern and southern mid-mountainous area of Korea. This cultivar is about 72 cm in culm length and tolerant to lodging. In the reaction to biotic and abiotic stresses, it shows resistance to leaf blast, but susceptibility to bacterial blight, virus diseases and insect pests. The milled rice of "Boseog" exhibits translucent, relatively clear non-glutinous endosperm and midium short grain. It has similar amylose content(18.0%), lower protein content(6.3%), and similar palatability of cooked rice compared to Odaebyeo. The milled rice yield of this variety is about 5.03 MT/ha in local adaptability test. "Boseog" would be adaptable for ordinary transplanting in northern plain, mid-mountainous and southern mountainous area of Korea.

  • Since summer growth depression of forage crops limits hay production in Korea, it is important to exploit natural resources which are suitable as forage. In the preliminary experiment it was found that Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx. might be utilized as soiling and hay crop. Effects of seed stratificaion, planting date and number of harvestings on fresh and dry yields of Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx. were investigated in 1993 and 1994. Stratification of seed promoted emergence, while seed age decreased emergence. Although fresh yield was closely related with number of plants estabilished per unit area, effect of number of plants per unit area on yield was less at the later stage of growth. Higher cutting height decreased fresh and dry yield at th early stage, but final yields were not influenced by cutting height. Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx. could be harvested 3~4 times beginning 40~50 days after planting and fresh and dry yields were 9~10 tons /10a and 1.4~1.8 tons /10a, respectively. Fresh and dry yields were significantly influenced by growth duration or accumulated temperature between cuttings. Leaf blade ratio was higher at earlier planting and / or harvesting. Contens of crude protein, crude fat and crude ash were 16.32, 24.01 and 11.59%, respectively.

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of spring seeding dates on the growth, yield and quality of early and late maturing spring oat (Auena sativa L.) cultivars on the forage experimental field, College of Agriculture, Seoul National University, Suwon from March to June, 1991. The experiment was arranged as a split plot with three replications. Oat cultivars, Cayuse and Speed oat, were the main plots, and seeding dates consisted of March 15, 22, 29, April 5 and 12 were the subplots. 1. A 7-day delay in seeding represents approximately 3~8 days being early in heading. The heading date of the early maturing cultivar, Speed oat, was 14 days earlier than that of the late maturing cultivar, Cayuse. 2. The concentrations of Crude protein (CP), Acid detergent fiber (ADF), Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and zn uitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of the late maturing cultivar, Cayuse, harvested May 29 were 19.6, 30.0, 44.9, and 82.7 %, respectively, but those of the early maturing cultivar, Speed oat, were 14.8. 33.3. 52.3, and 71.2 %, respectively. Chemical analyses of oat forage indicated that the contents of crude protein and lVDMD were increased from March 15 to April 12 seeding, while crude fiber was decreased. 3. Theaverage dry matter, IVDDM and CP yields of oats harvested May 29 were 2,960, 2,435 and 572 kg per ha, respectively with the late maturing cultivar. Cayuse. while the early maturing cultivar, Speed oat, recorded 3,255, 2.298 and 475 kg per ha, respectively. No significant dry matter yield differences were found among the different seeding dates of March 15, 22 and 29 for the two oat cultivars. but a significant yield decrease was found from April 5 seeding. No interactions in dry matter yield were observed between oat cultivars and seeding dates. 4. Maximum Leaf area index (LAI) and Leaf area index duration (LAID) were observed with earlier seeding and the LA1 of Cayuse cultivar was twice or three times as much as that of Speed oat cult~var as the growth progresses. 5. As the seeding date was earlier. the Crop growth rate (CGR) of the late maturing cultivar, Cayuse. was increased continuously. but that of the early maturing cultivar, Speed oat, was declined after May 29. This trend was also found on the Net assimilation rate (NAR) of Speed oat cultivar. The present experiment indicates that spring oats can be successfully produced as forages by seeding in March with early maturing cultivars.

  • ''Nokyang', a new high biomass yield and whole crop silage rice (Oriza sativa L.) cultivar, was developed by the rice breeding team of National Institute of Crop Science, RDA, Suwon, Korea, during the period from 1996 to 2006 and released in 2007. It was derived from a cross between Yongmoonbyeo/IR67396-16-3-3-1. This cultivar has about 130 days of growth duration from seeding to heading and is tolerance to lodging with erect pubescent leaves, semidwarf (culm length 78 cm) and thick culm. This cultivar has less tillers per hill and more spikelet numbers per panicle than Dasanbyeo. 'Nokyang' has wide and stay green leaf compared other Tongil-type varieties. This new variety is resistant to grain shattering and to some disease including bacterial leaf blight and stripe virus. This variety has good qualities for whole crop silage with high TDN (Total Digestive Nutrient) yield and low NDF (Neutral Detergent Fiber) and low ADF (Acid Detergent Fiber) and high RFV (Relative Feed Value) compared to common high grain yield varieties. The biomass and TDN yield performance of 'Nokyang' is 1,652 MT/ha, 9.9 MT/ha, individually in local adaptability test for three years. 'Nokyang' is adaptable to central plain area, south-eastern plain area of Korea.

  • Skin ridge (SR) is a irregular line shape that stand out in epidermal layer on sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas Lam.). SR reduced marketable value of storage root in sweet potato. It would be occurred by accumulation of starch in epidermal layer. SR rate was more highly increased in early planting. SR rate was under 3% in 7 varieties 'Geonpoongmi', 'Yeonhwangmi', 'Geonmi' etc and the rate of two varieties 'Healthymi', 'Borami' were up to 30%. SR rate was positively correlated with vine weight. SR rate was the highest in 120 days after planting. As leaf area index was reduced to 3, 4, 5 and 6 (non-topping) by topping, it was hard to fine SR occurrence in topping treated sweet potato. Topping treatment, however, caused decrease in yield overall. Therefore, topping treatment for decreasing of SR was not recommended in agricultural practice of sweet potato.

  • This study was carried out to investigate propagation characteristics of seedling and rhizome in Epimedium koreanum NAKAI. Seed germination essentially needed after-ripening duration after harvesting for 250days and more by stratification. At $20^{\circ}C$ seed emergence days and root length were 8 and 0.46cm respectively. The above-ground part of E. koreanum grew until 60days after root cutting and the underground part of it grew after that time. The optimum amount of organic fertilizer was fermented cow-manure with husk 2,000kg/10a that showed $57.5cm^2$ in leaf area per plant, 6.2cm in new rhizome length, and 0.43% in icariin content, an index component of E. koreanum, while inorganic N-fertilizer made E. koreanum worse as it increased. In nutriculture extruded rice hull media was better for growth than perlite media at 1/2 NHRI solution.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of different amount of nitrogen and deficiency of soil moisture on yield components of soybean. Soybean were seeded on 1/2000a wagner pot. Deficiency of soil moisture was treated at each growth atage of soybean. 1.In case of deficiencyt of soil moisture at the flowering time in the plot of non-nitrogen(NO D3), the growth duration of soybean was shortened about three to four days. 2. The leaf area was greatly affected by the influence of both treatments till 49days after germinating. 3.The increase of stem height, stem doameter, number of branches and lengeh of the branches came to an end about 70 days after seeding. These growing condition of tje soybean were lowest the plot of No D$_1$,in which the frowth of the soybeans were poor at the early stage. 4.The number of pods was not increased by the increase of fertilizing nitrogenous fertilizer. The number of pods was much decreased by the influence of soil mousture deiciency, and under this condition, the proportion of main stem pods and two or three grain pods was high. 5.The 3rd and 4h nodes and the 10th to 12th nodes from bottom had more pods than the other nodes had, but of the plants had grown well, they had more pods on the 3rd and 4th nodes, but if the plants had grown poorly, they had more pods on the 10th to 12th nodes. 6.The content of protein in the soybean was low at the plit of N。D$_4$which had not heavy weight of 100 grains, and the content of oil in the soybean was low in the plot in which each plant had a small number of grains.

  • To identify the differences on plant growth and yield of two rice cultivars among direct water-seeding methods broadcasting on flooded paddy surface(BF), drilling on flooded paddy surface(DF), and puddled-soil drill seeding(PD) under markedly different weather condition between 1995 and 1996. The mean air temperature for duration from May to June, early growth stage of rice in 1995 was lower $1{\sim}3^{\circ}C$ than that in normal or 1996. In 1995 the respiratory consumption index during panicle formation stage and early ripening stage was higher than those of in 1996 or normal year. Number of seedling stand among the methods of direct seeding rice appeared slightly higher in order of BF>DF>PD. Properly in Nonganbyeo, the number of seedling stand was much low in 1995 compared with in 1996. The leaf area index and shoot dry weight at early growth stage of rice plant and culm length at mature in 1995 were larger in direct water seeding rice than those of machanical transplanting rice, but in 1996. Faster ripening speed and shorter ripening period of rice crop appeared in 1996 compared to in 1995. It was due to higher growing degree-days, sunshine hours and solar radiation during rice growing season in 1996. Dongjinbyeo rice showed higher yield than Nonganbyeo which had lower ripened grains especially in 1995.

  • Background and Objectives : The concentration of sulfur dioxide($SO_2$) gas in the ambient air appears increasing in the industry and urban area day by day. It was known that $SO_2$ is noxious gas. $SO_2$ can be irritating to the eyes, nose, throat, upper respiratory tract and skin. It produces sulfurous acid on contact with water and is extremely irritating to the nasopharynx and respiratory tract. Laminin is a family of extracellular matrix glycoproteins localized in the basement membrane that separates epithelial cells from the underlying stroma. The biological activities of laminin are to promote cell migration, wound healing, growth and differentiation. Meterials and Methods : The histologic changes and the expression of laminin in tracheal mucosa sacrificed at every weeks (to 7 weeks) after continued $SO_2$ exposure of 250ppm for 30 minutes a day were studied in rats. Results : Pathologic tissue was formed at the tracheal mucosa and the underlying tissue by the infiltration of monocytes and epithelium was transformed to the single cell layered epithelium above 5 weeks after exposure. At the 6 weeks after exposure, epithelial cells were partially lost and epithelial cell layer was transformed to be leaf-shaped. Submucosal tissue was transformed to be lymphatic tissue. An intense positive staining for laminin was found in apical cytoplasm and lateral surface of the normal epithelial cells and basement membrane but at the 5 and 6 weeks after exposure, laminin activity was decreased to the moderate activity. At the 7 weeks after exposure, laminin activity was decreased to the weak activity. Conclusion : Our finding suggests that $SO_2$ makes histologic damage on the tracheal mucosa and decreases immunoreactivity for laminin. Longer duration of the exposure of $SO_2$ makes more histologic damage on the tracheal mucosa and decreases immunoreactivity for laminin.

  • In this paper, the high-resolution Weather Research and Forecasting/Noah-MultiParameterization (WRF/Noah-MP) modeling system is configured for the Cheongmicheon Farmland site in Korea (CFK), and its performance in land and atmospheric simulation is evaluated using the observed data at CFK during the 2014 special observation period (21 August-10 September). In order to explore the usefulness of turning on Noah-MP dynamic vegetation in midterm simulations of surface and atmospheric variables, two numerical experiments are conducted without dynamic vegetation and with dynamic vegetation (referred to as CTL and DVG experiments, respectively). The main results are as following. 1) CTL showed a tendency of overestimating daytime net shortwave radiation, thereby surface heat fluxes and Bowen ratio. The CTL experiment showed reasonable magnitudes and timing of air temperature at 2 m and 10 m; especially the small error in simulating minimum air temperature showed high potential for predicting frost and leaf wetness duration. The CTL experiment overestimated 10-m wind and precipitation, but the beginning and ending time of precipitation were well captured. 2) When the dynamic vegetation was turned on, the WRF/Noah-MP system showed more realistic values of leaf area index (LAI), net shortwave radiation, surface heat fluxes, Bowen ratio, air temperature, wind and precipitation. The DVG experiment, where LAI is a prognostic variable, produced larger LAI than CTL, and the larger LAI showed better agreement with the observed. The simulated Bowen ratio got closer to the observed ratio, indicating reasonable surface energy partition. The DVG experiment showed patterns similar to CTL, with differences for maximum air temperature. Both experiments showed faster rising of 10-m air temperature during the morning growth hours, presumably due to the rapid growth of daytime mixed layers in the Yonsei University (YSU) boundary layer scheme. The DVG experiment decreased errors in simulating 10-m wind and precipitation. 3) As horizontal resolution increases, the models did not show practical improvement in simulation performance for surface fluxes, air temperature, wind and precipitation, and required three-dimensional observation for more agricultural land spots as well as consistency in model topography and land cover data.
