The study has been carried to investigate the nature of resistance in rice varieties against bacterial leaf blight caused by Xanthomonas oryzae (Uyeda et. Ishiyama) Dowson. In this study, differences on several morphological histological and bacterial growth in rice leaf extract from different varieties were examined. Shirogane and Norm 6 as resistant varieties, Paldal as moderately resistant, and Jinheung, Kimmaze and Suwon 213 as susceptible varieties were used throughout the experiment. 1. Susceptible varieties Jinheung, Kimmaze have more hydathods in flag leaf than resistant varieties but there were no difference between resistant varieties and moderatly resistant varieties. 2. Average length of xylem vessel elements were 50r longer in leaf veins of susceptible varieties Jinheung, Kimnaze and Suwon 213 than those of resistant varieties, but there were no difference among Paldal, Norm 6 and Shirogane. 3. Kimmaze and Suwon 213 have larger diameter of xylem vessel elements than those of other varieties examined. However, it did not differ significantly between resistant varieries and susceptible varieties statistically. 4. Jinheung and Kimmaze have more secondary xylem vessels in root of 6-7th leaf stage than those of Shirogane and Norm 6. Suwon 213, however, showed least number of secondary xylem vessels exceptionally. 5. Leaf extract from resistnat variety Shirogane, suppressed bacterial growth significantly when compared with those from other varieties. 6. Bacterial growth in autoclaved leaf extract from resistant varieties and susceptible varieties did not show any noticeable difference. In general, fresh extract maintained more bacteria than in autoclaved extract after 48 hours of incubation period.
This study was performed to provide basic physiological activities data to predict the usefulness of olive leaves as a food material. Total flavonoid and total phenol contents of 80% ethanol extract of olive leaf were 5.81% and 14.8%, respectively. Total flavonoid and total phenol contents were markedly higher in butanol and ethyl acetate fractions than in hexane, chloroform, and water fractions (p<0.05). Oleuropein in olive leaf was the major phenolic compound. The oleuropein contents of 80% ethanol extract, butanol and ethyl acetate fractions of olive leaf were 102.11${\pm}$0.02, 173.35${\pm}$0.03 and 152.71${\pm}$0.03 mg/100g, respectively. The 80% ethanol extract, butanol and ethyl acetate fractions of olive leaf showed a growth inhibitory effect to Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella enteritidis, whereas antimicrobial activities of hexane and chloroform fractions were not observed. The inhibitory activity to ACE was determined to be very weekly positive in 80% ethanol extract and all fractions of olive leaf. The nitrite-scavenging ability of 80% ethanol extract, butanol and ethyl acetate fractions of olive leaf were 72.8%, 76.0% and 75.4%, respectively. Significant evidence was detected that the butanol and ethyl acetate fractions showed higher activity than that of hexane, chloroform, and water fractions (p<0.05).
It was confirmed that extracts of some plants were used in folklore medicine as hypoglycemic agents. Of these plants is Azadirachta indica ("neem") which grows in tropical regions. The present study deals with biochemical effects of the "neem" leaf water extract given orally to experimental aminals, especially the hypoglycemic characteristics. Normals as well as alloxan diabetic rats have been used in this work. The results showed that the "neem" leaf extract produced some hypoglycemia in normal rats when given in two doses, while in diabetic rats there was a decrease in blood sugar, but it could not alleviate the diabetic in body weight loss and high percentage mortality, especially with a high dose. It was observed increased with concomitant decrease in the liver fat as compared to normal levels. There was also a drop in liver proteins which was dose-related. The results were compared wiht those obtained with an oral hypoglycemic drug (Glibenclamide).glycemic drug (Glibenclamide).

In relation to the global increase trend of obesity population, there is a demand for the development of foods having high functional activity by mass-extracting anti-obesity active substances using mulberry product such as leaf and fruit. Therefore, we evaluated the antiobesity efficacy according to varieties by using the mulberry leaves and fruit extracts. At the same time, high active varieties were selected. For this purpose, the effects of the extracts of the mulberry leaf and fruit on 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation were examined. As a result, in the case of mulberry leaves, the lipid accumulation inhibitory rate of 'Cheongolppong' was higher than that of the control at $500{\mu}g/ml$ treatment. And in the case of the extract of mulberry fruit, 'Daesim' showed the highest lipid accumulation inhibitory rate compared with the control at 50 times of diluted extract.
The purpose of this study was to investigate dyeing properties and antibacterial activities of cotton and silk fabrics treated with Ginkgo biloba leaf extracted with three kinds of aqueous solvents: distilled water, electrolytic reduction water and electrolytic oxidation water. The optimum dyeing condition of Ginkgo biloba leaf was 120 min at 8$0^{\circ}C$. Electrolytic reduction water had the highest dyeability to both cotton and silk compared with electrolytic oxidation water and distilled water. A color of extract by distilled water and electrolytic oxidation water showed yellowish Yellow Red, extract by electrolytic reduction water showed reddish Yellow Red. Irrespective of kinds of extraction solvents, appropriate acidity of medium was pH 9∼11 and pH 3 for cotton and silk fabrics, respectively. Colorfastness to laundering and Light fastness showed generally low but crocking fastness was excellent. Antibacterial activities of the treated fabrics above were 99.9%.

The antimutagenic effects of persimmon leaf tea extract (PLTE) at concentration levels consumed by human were examined in mice using micronuleus induction with MMC(mitomycin C) or 4-NQO (4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide). When mice received oral gavage of 10 equivalent to PLTE 24 hr and 6 hr before, and 5 equivalent to PLTE 6 hr before and 3 hr after intraperitoneal injection of MMC, a significant decrease in the frequency of micronuclei were observed. The induction of micronuclei by 4-NQO was suppressed by oral dosage of PLTE at 5 equivalent to PLTE 6 hr before and 3 hr after, 10 equivalent to PLTE 3 hr before and 3 hr after intraperitoneal injection of MMC. Though the components of PLTE have not been analyzed so far, our present results suggest the existence of several bio-antimutagens and/or desmutagens in PLTE, beside catechin, well-known antimutagen.
Objectives : Present study investigated the hepatoprotective effects of various combinations of lemon balm and dandelion (LD) leaf extract on carbon tetrachloride ($CCl_4$)-induced acute liver injury. Methods : Mice were orally treated with 200 mg/kg of LD extracts [1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:6, 1:8, 2:1, 4:1, 6:1, or 8:1 (weight : weight)] for 7 days, and then intraperitoneally injected with $CCl_4$ (0.5 mL/kg). Silymarin (100 mg/kg) was used as reference drug. Body weight gain, relative liver weight, serum biochemistry, histopathologic analyses, and hepatic antioxidant system were examined to elucidate the fittest combination ratio of LD extract. Results : All varying combinations of LD extract significantly increased body weight gain and decreased relative liver weight by $CCl_4$. In addition, LD extract reduced serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase. Histopathological analyses indicated that LD extract significantly decreased histological activity index score, degenerated hepatocytes, and infiltrated inflammatory cells induced by $CCl_4$. Moreover, LD extract reduced lipid peroxidation, and attenuated the reduction of hepatic glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase by $CCl_4$. Although there were no statistical differences in body weight gain between silymarin- and LD extract-treated groups, administration of 1:1, 2:1, and 4:1 combination of LD extract exhibited more favorable hepatoprotective effects than silymarin. Especially, 2:1 combination of LD extract showed the most potent hepatoprotective effects. Conclusion : Of various combinations of LD extract tested, present results suggest that 2:1 combination of LD extract would be a promising herbal formulation to protect liver from oxidative stress.
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) plants have been reported to be autotoxic as well as allelopathic. Laboratory and greenhouse experiments through petri-dish and pot test were conducted to determine autotoxic effects of alfalfa leaf and soil extracts on the germination or early seedling growth of alfalfa, and to evaluate allelopathic effects of alfalfa leaf residues on alfalfa, barnyard grass, com, eclipta and soybean. Alfalfa seed germination was delayed depending on aqueous extract concentration, with no difference in final germination after 48 hours. Alfalfa root length was more sensitive to the autotoxic chemicals from leaf extracts than was germination or shoot length. Root growth of alfalfa was significantly inhibited at extract concentration of more than 1 g dry tissue/L (g $\textrm{L}^{-1}$). Hypocotyl growth, however, was not affected by all the concentrations of leaf extracts. Soil extracts from 4-yr-old alfalfa stand significantly reduced alfalfa root length by 66%, while soil extracts from 0,1, and 3yr-old stand stimulated root length up to 14-32% over the control. Residue incorporation with dry matters of alfalfa leaf at 100 g $\textrm{kg}^{-1}$ reduced seedling length of several crop and weed species, ranging from 53 to 87% inhibition. Addition of nutrient solution into alfalfa leaf extracts alleviated alfalfa autotoxic effect. This result indicates alfalfa leaf and soil extracts or residues could exert autotoxic as well as allelopathic substances into soil environments during and after establishment.
The aim of this investigation was to examine the antioxidation, physicochemical, and sensory activity of a Korean steamed-rice cake, Sulgidduk, fortified with water extracts from Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) leaf. M. oleifera leaf extracts were added to rice powder at rations of 0.1%, 1% and 10%. To examine antioxidation properties, the scavenging activities of DPPH radicals, hydroxyl radicals, ABTS+ radicals, and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power were investigated. M. oleifera extracts significantly increased the antioxidation activities of Sulgidduk in a dose dependent manner (p<0.05). Physicochemical characteristics were measured by proximate composition, color, texture profile analysis, and sensory evaluations. As the concentration of M. oleifera leaf extracts increased, L-values and a-values significantly decreased while b-values increased. Texture profile analysis demonstrated that the control groups showed significantly higher values for hardness, cohesiveness, chewiness, and adhesiveness as compared with groups containing M. oleifera leaf extract (p<0.05). In the sensory evaluation, the sample containing 0.1% of M. oleifera leaf extract obtained the best results in overall preference. Taken together, these results suggest that M. oleifera leaf may have the potential to increase the consumer acceptability and the functionality of Sulgidduk.
The occurrence and physico-chemical properties of flat leaves found in 1997 curing trial related to the prevention of occurrence of flat leaves at bulk curing of flue-cured tobacco were investigated and compared with those of normal leaves. Cured leaves of NC82 were separated into 4 classes of none, slight, fair and severe symptoms of flat leaf by the percentage of flattened parts to whole leaf area. The flat leaves were mostly found among the leaves of lower stalk position, and it was estimated that growth rate of lower leaves also influenced on the occurrence of flat leaves. In chromatic aberration of cured leaf, flat leaves showed remarkably lower b and L values than in those of normals but there was no difference in a value. On the other hand, in chemical analyses of flat leaf samples, nicotine, total sugar, ether extract and total nitrogen contents were decreased with the degree of flat symptoms. In physical properties, filling capacity of cured leaves was decreased with the degree of flat symptoms comparing with those of normal leaves, while shatter index was showed a reverse tendency, and then within the same leaf, flat parts were decreased in total sugar, ether extract and filling capacity compared with those of normal ones, but remarkably increased in shatter index, and there was no difference in nicotine and total nitrogen contents.
