  • This paper presents a dynamic retry adaptation scheme for H.264 HD video, called DRAS.264, which dynamically adjusts the retry limits of frames at the medium access control (MAC) layer according to the impact those frames have on the streamed H.264 HD video. DRAS.264 is further improved with a bandwidth estimation technique, better prediction of packet delays, and expanded results covering multi-slice video. Our study is performed using the Open Evaluation Framework for Video Over Networks as a simulation environment for various congestion scenarios. Results show improvements in average peak signal-to-noise ratios of up to 4.45 dB for DRAS.264 in comparison to the default MAC layer operation. Furthermore, the ability of DRAS.264 to prioritize data of H.264 bitstreams reduces error propagation during video playback, leading to noticeable visual improvements.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the product characteristics and spatial configuration in a retail store. This study utilized the analytical method of Space Syntax, and the software package used for the analysis was New-wave and Pesh. The qualitative study focused on the showroom of 'H INTERIOR', a leading furniture company in Korea, and examined the accessibility of the space. The result showed that the main accessible route was well established in the retail store, and more trendy and fashionable products were likely to be displayed in more accessible places. Also, the products in the selected showroom were arranged according to the pricing information, so that products with lower price were displayed in more accessible places. This study suggested that it be important to adequately and appropriately display the products in relation to the characteristics of products, and implied that the method of Space Syntax was useful to strategically evaluate the display in retail spaces.

  • For the potential applications in large-area OLED lightings, hydrogen fuel cells, and secondary batteries, we have performed an intermittent coating of high-viscosity polydimethylsiloxane using roll-to-roll slot die coater. During intermittent coating, dead zones inevitably appear where the thickness of PDMS patch films becomes non-uniform, especially at the leading/trailing edge. To reduce it, we have coated the PDMS patches by varying the process parameters such as the installation angle of the slot die head, coating speed, and patch interval. It is observed that the PDMS solution flows down and thus the thickness profile is non-uniform for horizonal intermittent coating, whereas the PDMS solution remaining on the head lip causes an increase in the PDMS thickness at the leading/trailing edges for vertical intermittent coating when the coating velocity is low. As the coating speed increases, however, the dead zone is shown to be reduced. It is addressed that the overall dead zone (the dead zone at the leading edge + the dead zone at the trailing edge) is smaller with horizontal intermittent coating than with vertical intermittent coating.

  • As international standards of ICT were recently recognized as a essential strategy to penetrate into global markets in advance, the competition for international standardization among advanced countries and companies has been intensified. Meanwhile, our country has become the first one in the world market share of display devices since the year 2001. Due to world economic depression, the industry of display has become stagnant since the year 2010. Therefore, advance countries have concentrated on the research and development of next-generation display to overcome this situation. It is necessary to set up the strategy of standardization on essential technology of next-generation display and implement it systematically in order to take leading position in global market of next-generation display in smart information society of the 21th century. In this paper, I'll propose constructive strategies of standardization through analyzing the trend and environment of standardization and technological development of next-generation display.

  • During the last decade, the dominant design of display has been LCD, and it has been led by Korean manufacturers. However, their leading positions has been recently threatened by Chinese manufacturers, Korean manufacturers are endeavoring to move toward next generation display technologies. They embarked on standards battle to win dominant design especially in the next generation display market for TVs by launching new technologies such as Quantum-dot display and OLED. While there are a number of factors of dominant design, it is expected that the technical attributes of the technology itself may be the most significant factor. For this reason, this research scrutinizes consumer preferences for technical attributes, and attempts to provide implications for standards battle in the display (for the TVs) sector. For this purpose, we employed a conjoint analysis for the preferences of potential consumers. The results show that potential consumers prefer displays with higher resolution, natural color, and durabillity.

  • Display industry in Korea has been rapidly developing over 20 years, now taking the top-class leading position in the world. Nevertheless, many previous studies have mainly focused on major panel set makers. To overcome the drawbacks, this study focuses on supplier companies in the upstream of display industry such as materials, components, and equipments sectors. The research method used in this study is an industry value chain perspective combined with architectural innovation approach. Display panel is produced through fabrication process and modular process, each having a different characteristics of process architecture. This research figured out that there are quite a different development characteristics between materials and components suppliers and equipment suppliers. The number and revenue of materials and components suppliers were quite larger than equipments suppliers. However, the former has been growing mainly in the field of modular process, having a very weak position in the field of fabrication process. On the contrary, equipments suppliers have been showing a continuously growing pattern in the field of fabrication process. The R&D expenditures between these two kinds of suppliers showed a similar pattern. The fabrication process of display panel production is characterized as a highly integral architecture characteristics, so as to be a strong barriers to local suppliers, resulting less development of materials and components suppliers in Korea.

  • Conventional methods like PIN used in conventional smartphone form factor have not considered the variation in display structure or screen size. As a result, when applied to recent variable display-based smartphones, the secret information input unit may get reduced or enlarged, leading to vulnerabilities for social engineering attacks due to deformation of the display area. This study proposes a secure keypad that responds to changes in display size in rollable and bendable smart phones. Firstly, the security problems that may arise when applying classical authentication methods to new form factors were analyzed, and corresponding security requirements were derived. The proposed security keypad addresses the key input error problem that can occur when the screen size is small. The arrangement and size of keys can be deformed with the spacing suitable for input depending on the display size of rollable and bendable smartphones. The study also considered the problem of leaking input information for social engineering attacks by irregularly distributing key input coordinates. The proposed method provides better user experience and security than existing methods and can be used in smartphones of various sizes and shapes.

  • The mechanism for lattice-shaped mura defects was proposed by characterizing the electro-optic properties of liquid crystal (LC), which showed different transmission properties between the normal and mura defect areas. An increase in the mura defect rate was observed when the dotted LC in the one drop filling (ODF) was exposed for a longer time. The dotted LC droplet at the edge evaporated more rapidly than that in the center. This resulted in a higher concentration of polar singles at the edge of the dotted LC droplet, leading to a higher ${\Delta}n$ value and higher transmittance. This implies that the reductio of the exposure time of the dotted LC to air plays a critical role in decreasing the occurrence of lattice-shaped mura defects in ODF.

  • Carbon nanotube field emission display devices were fabricated using screen printing techniques. The CNT pastes are composed of organic binder, CNT, and additive materials such as glass frit, silver or ITO powders. The change in mixing ratio of various organic binders in CNT paste varied the electron emission characteristics. With increasing the contents of additive materials in CNT paste, turn-on field were increased, leading to decrease in electron emission current. The post-treatment process in this study induced the vertical alignment of carbon nanotubes on glass, resulting in the improvement of electron emission uniformity.

  • In this paper, the effect of a flow barrier and bypass on the cooling performance for a straight fin heat sink is presented. Both side directions and upward direction of bypass are controlled using various ducts which have different width and heights. In addition, a flow barrier is used to control flow toward heat sink. Through experiments, the distance from leading edge of a heat sink to a flow barrier is varied for various bypasses under fixed volume flow rate condition. This study shows possibility to improve cooling performance when bypass and a flow barrier exist.
