  • Waste citrus peel-based activated carbon (WCAC) was prepared from waste citrus peels by activation with KOH. The removal of Cu and Pb ions from aqueous solution by the prepared WCAC was investigated in batch experiments. The solution pH significantly influenced Cu and Pb adsorption capacity and the optimum pH was 4 to 6. The adsorption of Cu and Pb ions by WCAC followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated by Langmuir isotherm model was 31.91 mg/g for Cu and 92.22 mg/g for Pb. As the temperature was increased from 303 K to 323 K, the ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ value decreased from -7.01 to -8.57 kJ/mol for Cu ions and from -0.87 to -2.06 kJ/mol for Pb ions. These results indicated that the adsorption of Cu and Pb by WCAC is a spontaneous process.

  • We investigated the individual biosorption removal of lead, copper, and nickel ions from aqueous solutions using Chara sp. algae powder in a batch mode. The impact of several parameters, such as initial concentration of the metal ions, contacting time, sorbent dose, and pH on the removal efficiency, was investigated. The maximum removal efficiency at optimum conditions was found to be 98% for Pb(II) at pH = 4, 90% for Cu(II) at pH = 5, and 80% for Ni(II) at pH = 5. The isotherm study was done under the optimum conditions for each metal by applying the experimental results onto the well-known Freundlich and Langmuir models. The results show that the Langmuir is better in describing the isotherm adsorption of Pb(II) and Ni(II), while the Freundlich is a better fit in the case of Cu(II). Similarly, a kinetic study was performed by using the pseudo-first and second-order equations. Our results show that the pseudo-second-order is better in representing the kinetic adsorption of the three metal ions.

  • The volatilization of alkali ions in (K,Na)NbO3 (KNN) ceramics was inhibited by doping them with alkaline earth metal ions. In addition, the grain growth behavior changed significantly as the sintering duration (ts) increased. At 1,100 ℃, the volatilization of alkali ions in KNN ceramics was more suppressed when doped with alkaline earth metal ions with smaller ionic size. A Ca2+-doped KNN specimen with the least alkali ion volatilization exhibited a microstructure in which grain growth was completely suppressed, even under long-term sintering for ts = 30 h. The grain growth in Sr2+-doped and Ba2+-doped KNN specimens was suppressed until ts = 10 h. However, at ts = 30 h, a heterogeneous microstructure with abnormal grains and small-sized matrix grains was observed. The size and number of abnormal grains and size distribution of matrix grains were considerably different between the Sr2+-doped and Ba2+-doped specimens. This microstructural diversity in KNN ceramics could be explained in terms of the crystal growth driving force required for two-dimensional nucleation, which was directly related to the number of vacancies in the material.

  • This work assesses the potential of natural Analcime Zeolite as an adsorbent for preconcentration of lead (II) traces. Lead is quantitatively retained on 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol by column method with Analcime in the pH range of 5-6.5 and 2 mL $min^{?1}$ flow rate. Lead was removed from the column with 10.0 mL of 4 M hydrochloric acid and was determined by anodic stripping differential pulse voltammetry. 0.5ppb detection limit was obtained and linear dynamic range was 3 to $1.2{\times}10^5$ ppb in final solution with correlation coefficient of 0.999 and relative standard deviation of ${\pm}$ 1.2% (for eight replicate determination of 2.5 ${\mu}g\;mL^{?1}$ of lead). Various parameters such as the effect of pH, flow rate, instrumental conditions and interferences of some ions on the determination of lead have been studied in detail for optimization of conditions. The method was successfully applied for determination of lead in various samples.

  • The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity of seven Bifidobacterium spp. strains was examined by an indirect SOD assay method. Some Bifidobacterium spp. showed significant levels of SOD activity. However, we could not observe any significant differences between anaerobic and aerobic cultures. Furthermore, although several Bifidobacterium spp. exhibited some degree of tolerance to paraquat which produces superoxide radicals, the apparent SOD activity of these strains was not correlated with their resistance to paraquat. In addition, when we added increasing amounts of manganese or iron to MRS medium which had been prepared without either of the metal ions, the apparent SOD activity of cell free extracts (CFEs) was increased with increasing concentration of both metal ions. To our surprise, the heat-denatured CFEs also showed nearly identical correlative patterns. Based on these results, the apparent SOD activity was likely due to a nonenzymatic dismutation. These results strongly suggest that high concentration of divalent metal ions ($Mn^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$) in MRS medium result in nonenzymatic dismutation which can lead to false positive SOD activities in Bifidobacerium spp.

  • The biosorption abilities of different parts of waste brown seaweeds and their derivatives to remove heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Pb, Cu, Fe, Ni, Mn) from waste were evaluated. The two parts of waste brown seaweeds (Undaria pinnatifida) were stems and sporophyls, and the brown seaweed derivatives were alginic fibers, active carbon added alginate(AC-alginate) and dealginate. The abilities of the sporophyls to adsorb the heavy metal ions were higher than those of stems, and those of alginates were slightly higher than those of dealginate in single ion solution. With decreasing the size of biosorbents, the velocity and the amount of adsorption increased. The abilities of alginate to remove the heavy metal ions increased in multi-ion solutions by adding active carbon to alginate. The selectivity of these biosorbents(alginate, AC-alginate) to lead ion was highest and to manganese ion was lowest.

  • Phenyl styryl ketone ligands 1-5 containing different functional groups were synthesized and attached to the aminated poly (styrene-divinvlbenzene) copolymer through diazotization. The coupling of the ligand with polymer was confirmed by FT-IR. The variation of the uptakes of Pb (II) or Cu (II) ions loaded in the prepared polymers (6-10) was examined at different pH values. An increase of metal uptake in the polymers was observed with the increase in pH value in aqueous solution.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the removal of heavy metal by using the coprecipitation of barium sulfate. Several parameters governing the efficiency of the coprecipitation method were evaluated by the pH of sample solution, amount of coprecipitant, and addition of sulfide for the removal of As(V), Cd(II), Cr(III), Cr(VI), Cu(II), Hg(II) and Pb(II) metal ions ($10{\mu}g/ml$ each). The coprecipitation was about 80% - 95% only for lead at low pH but under 10% for other ions. The amount of removal was about 95% - 100% for Cd, Hg, Pb, Cu in the all pH range by the addition of sulfide with barium sulfate but As(V) and Cr(III, VI) ions were not affected by the same conditions.

  • The carboxylated multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) and functionalized with isatin derivative (MWCNT-isatin) have been used as efficient adsorbents for the removal of lead (Pb) from aqueous solutions. The influence of variables including pH, concentration of the lead, amount of adsorbents and contact time was investigated by the batch method. The adsorption of the lead ions from aqueous solution by modified MWCNTs was studied kinetically using different kinetic models. The kinetic data were fitted with pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models. The sorption process with MWCNT-COOH and MWCNT-isatin was well described by pseudo-second-order and pseudo-first-order kinetics, respectively which it was agreed well with the experimental data. Also, it involved the particle-diffusion mechanism. The values of regression coefficient of various adsorption isotherm models like Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin to obtain the characteristic parameters of each model have been carried out. The Langmuir isotherm was found to best represent the measured sorption data for both adsorbent.

  • A chloroform membrane system containing a given mixture of benzylaza-12-crown-4 and oleic acid is introduced for the selective and efficient transport of $Pb^{2+}$ ion. The transport was capable of moving metal ions ‘up-hill’. In the presence of ${S_2O_3}^{2-}$ion as a suitable metal ion acceptor in the receiving phase, the amount of lead ion transport across the liquid membrane after 150 minutes is (95.0 ${\pm}$ 1.7)%. The selectivity and efficiency of lead transport from aqueous solution containing $Tl^+,\;Ag^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{2+},\;Co^{2+},$ $Ni^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\;Zn^{2+},\;Hg^{2+}$ and $Cd^{2+}$were investigated. In the presence of thiosulfate as a suitable masking agent in the source phase, the interfering effects of $Ag^+\;and\;Cu^{2+}$ were diminished drastically.
