  • The EPIC model was applied to assess the environmental impacts of two contrasting tillage systems (conventional versus ridge tillage). The model was calibrated with field data and validated with another set of data. The errors between the 12-year predicted and observed means or medians were less than 10% for nearly all of the environmental indicators, with the major exception of a nearly 44% over prediction of the N surface runoff loss for Watershed 2. The predicted N leaching rates, N losses in surface runoff, and sediment loss clearly showed that EPIC was able to simulate the long-term impacts of tillage and residue cover on these processes.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the vertical variation of heavy metals in tailings from the Sangdong W mine. Tailings samples were taken at 6 drilling sites with 50cm intervals up to 21 meters in depth and dried at room temperature. The pH value, loss-on-ignition and water contents were measured. In addition, chemical compositions of the samples were determined by AAS after 0.1 N HCl leaching and ICP-AES after aqua regia leaching. The pH values were in the range of 7.4 to 9.5 due to chemical reactions of carbonate minerals. The ranges of heavy metals (mg/kg) extracted by 0.1N HCl were from 0.17 to 0.93 for Cd, 0.04 to 4.39 for Cu, 0.03 to 10.9 for Pb and 0.06 to 14.1 for Zn and those extracted by aqua regia were $3.10\~10.5,\;23.61\~251,\;63.7\~337\;and\;42.6\~134$ for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, respectively. Generally, the metal concentrations in tailings extracted by 0.1N HCl decreased with depth, whilst those extracted by aqua regia have a tendency to increase with depth in some case. Those trends might be due to the change of oxidation-reduction condition of the tailings.

  • As the demand for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles is increasing, it is important to recover valuable metals from waste lithium-ion batteries. In this study, the effects of gas flow rate and hydrogen partial pressure on hydrogen reduction of NCM-based lithium-ion battery cathode materials were investigated. As the gas flow rate and hydrogen partial pressure increased, the weight loss rate increased significantly from the beginning of the reaction due to the reduction of NiO and CoO by hydrogen. At 700 ℃ and hydrogen partial pressure above 0.5 atm, Ni and Li2O were produced by hydrogen reduction. From the reduction product and Li recovery rate, the hydrogen reduction of NCM-based cathode materials was significantly affected by hydrogen partial pressure. The Li compounds recovered from the solution after water leaching of the reduction products were LiOH, LiOH·H2O, and Li2CO3, with about 0.02 wt% Al as an impurity.

  • A field study was conducted to determine the runoff loss of N and P in small scale of red pepper field plots (10% slope), consisting of three different plots with black polyethylene vinyl mulching (mulching), ridge without mulching (ridge), and flat without ridge and mulching (flat). Composted manure and urea as a basal application were applied at rates of $20MT\;ha^{-1}$ and $93kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Urea at $189kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ and fused phosphate at $67kg\;P_2O_5\;ha^{-1}$ were additionally applied on June 25 with different fertilization methods, broadcast application in flat plot and hole injection in ridge and mulching plots. Plant uptake of N and P was positively correlated with their respective concentrations in surface soil: mulching > ridge > flat plots. The runoff loss by soil erosion was higher in flat plot than ridge and mulching plot with contour line. Nitrate loss by the runoff water had no significant differences among three surface management practices, but the higher average value in ridge and mulching plots than flat plot. Especially, the flat plot had no phosphate loss during summer season. This is probably due to low labile P content in surface soil of flat plot. In the summation of soil and water loss, flat plot was higher in N and P loss than ridge and mulching plot with contour line. Nevertheless, the nitrate and phosphate loss by runoff water could be more important for non-point source management because the water could meet the river easier than eroded soil because of re-deposition around slope land.

  • Basic properties of artificial lightweight aggregate by using waste dusts and strength properties of LWA concrete were studied. Bulk specific gravity and water absorption of artificial lightweight aggregates varied from 1.4 to 1.7 and 13 to 16%, respectively. Crushing ratio of artificial lightweight aggregate was above 10% higher than that of crushed stone or gravel. As a result of TCLP leaching test, the leaching amount of tested heavy metal element was below the leaching standard of hazardous material. Slump, compressive strength and stress-strain properties of LWA concrete made of artificial lightweight aggregate were tested. Concrete samples derived from LWA substitution ratio of 30 vol% and W/C ratio of 45 wt% showed the best properties overall. Thermal insulation and sound insulation characteristics of light weight concrete panel with the optimum concrete proportion were tested. Average overall heat transmission of 3.293W/㎡$^{\circ}C$ was observed. It was higher by about 15% than those of normal concrete made by crushed stone. Sound transmission loss of 50.9 ㏈ in frequency of 500 ㎐ was observed. It was higher by about 13% than standard transmission loss.

  • Annual production and decomposition of litter were studied in piuns rigida platation in Mt. Kwan-ak. The peak time of litter production was October-November. The litterfalll at that time was 54% of annual litter production. But the peak time of litterfall of reproductive parts was Junejuly. The peak times of litter production in Alnus hirsuta plantation were June-July, and November. It is thought that difference of seasonal distribution of letterfall between two forest types were assigned to litter falling factors such as temperature and insects. Total amount of letter loss increased according to time. Particulary, the peak time of loss rate was July-August. It was shown that the protein and phosphorus were accumulated in the letter for an experimental period. The amount of crude protein increased to 150% of initial amount. The amount of potassium was increased by August and then decreased rapidly. The contents of crude fat, holocellulose, lignin, and Na were decreased slowly. The loss of holocellulose was the largiest among them. Calcium was in steady state. It was thought that this variation pattern was assigned to leaching of soluble parts by high temperature, rainfall and growth rate of microorganisms.

  • Korean territories has formed about 70% of mountainous areas that have acidified serious level to average pH 4-5. There are a number of abandoned metal mines about 1,000 in Korea. However, mine tailings and waste rock included heavy metals are exposed to long-term environment without prevention facility or treatment system. Thus, ongoing management and monitoring of soil environment are required. Most of abandoned mine scattered in forest areas of slopes. Soil erosion due to continuous rainfall in the slopy areas can cause the secondary pollution by the influence eutrophication of water system and the productivity loss of the plant. Therefore, this study would like to estimate pH leaching rate by artificial rainfall using waste neutralization-agent in lysimeter. Moreover, the potentially of secondary pollution related to precipitation is figured out through the experiments, and the optimal planting methods would examinate after neutralizing treatment in soil. Experiments composed three kinds of lysimeter; lysimeter 1 had filled only acidic soil, lysimeter 2 had neutralized soil, and lysimeter 3 had planting plants after neutralized soil. In the results, lysimeter 2 showed the lowest pH leaching, and there is not specific relativity with pH leaching of the seasonal characteristics.

  • Experiment has been performed to investigate the thermal and magnetic properties of Mn-ferrite by electrolysis. Using the 0.2%C mild steel as soluble anode and SUS 304 stainless steel as cathode, Mn-ferrite could be made from the sulfuric acid leaching of the wasted manganese dry cell and $MnSO_4$reagent by electrolysis. As the result of X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and magnetic measurement, Mn-ferrite was the spinel type in $Mn_{x}Fe_{3-x}O_4$ (X=1), the weight loss rate of $Mn_{x}Fe_{3-x}O_4$ were linearly increased up to the $200^{\circ}C$. Ms, Mr and Hc values were decreased with increasing Mn content and heating temperature. When Mn-ferrite was formed by $MnCl_2$reagent electrolysis, Ms values were higher than those formed from the sulfuric acid leaching of the wasted manganese dry cell and $MnSO_4$reagent by electrolysis. In Mn-ferrite, which was formed from the sulfuric acid leaching of the wasted manganese dry cell by electrolysis, Ms and Mr values were higher, Hc values were lower than which was formed by $MnSO_4$ reagent electrolysis at $200^{\circ}C\;and\;300^{\circ}C, while the same values at $100^{\circ}C$. The shape of particles was spherical type, the sizes of them were about $0.1{\mu}m$ sub-micron in $MnSO_4$reagent electrolysis, $0.5{\mu}m$ in the sulfuric acid leaching of the wasted manganese dry cell by electrolysis.

  • Owing to the demand for lithium-ion batteries, the recovery of valuable metals from waste lithium-ion batteries is required in future. A pyrometallurgical treatment is appropriate for recycling a large number of waste lithium-ion batteries, but Li loss to slag and dust present a significant challenge. This research investigated carbonation roasting and water leaching behaviors in Li-ion batteries by graphite addition to recover Li from the NCM-based cathode materials of waste Li-ion batteries. When 10 wt% of graphite was added, CO and CO2 gases were emitted with a rapid weight reduction at apporoximately 850 K, when heated in Ar and CO2 atmosphere. After the rapid weight reduction, NCM was decomposed and reduced to metal oxides and pure metals. In the carbonation roasting of black powder (NCM+graphite), O2 is generated via the decomposition of NCM, and an oxides, such as Li2O and NiO were were also generated. Subsequently, Li2O reacts with CO2 to generate Li2CO3, and a part of NiO was reduced by graphite to produce metal Ni. In addition, up to 94.5 % Li2CO3 with ~99.95 % purity was recovered via water leaching after carbonation roasting.
