This study investigated the possibility of phosphogypsum (PG) recycle as an embankment material by eco-toxicity experiments for S. capricornutum, T. suecica and D. magna. The eco-toxicity experiment was studied according to column leachates from PG mixing ratio, and a specific growth rate of S. capricornutum was usually higher than that of T. suecica. For D. magna, 0.3 of toxicity unit was obtained, which indicated the below of toxicity value of 1 at PG50 condition during a 48-hr test. A minor effect of column leachate samples on three organisms was observed. This study suggested that PG was satisfied with the criteria of waste recycle and could be reused at PG30 condition.

There have been only a few studies focused on the stabilization of metal (loid)s in anaerobic soils such as paddy soils. In this study, laboratory-scale column tests were conducted to artificially manipulate anoxic conditions in submerged paddy fields and we observed the release behavior of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn, as well as to examine the stabilization effect of steel refining slag (SRS) on the metal(loid)s. The leachate samples were collected and chemical parameters were monitored during the test period. Results suggest that anoxic conditions were developed during submersion, and that As or heavy metals (particularly Cd) fractions bound to ferrous (Fe) /manganese (Mn) oxides were easily dissociated. Moreover, As is also reduced by itself to a trivalent form with higher mobility in the reducing environment of rice paddy soil. However, it was also shown that SRS significantly decreased the dissolution of Zn, Pb, Cd, and As in the the leachates; their removal rates in the SRS-treated soil were 66 %, 45 %, 24 %, and 84 %, respectively, of those in the control soil.

In order to investigate the quantitative and qualitative properties of leachate with different composition of MSW in solid waste landfill, three lysimeters filled with bottom ash only (Lysimeter A), bottom ash 70%+municipal solid waste 30% (Lysimeter B), and municipal solid waste only (Lysimeter C) respectively were operated under actual meteorological conditions. From the results, Lysimeter A and Lysimeter B were much higher than Lysimeter C in terms of cumulative generation rates of leachate. The pH in leachate from Lysimeter A are in the range of pH 9 to 11, however, the pH of the leachate was gradually changed to the neutral with time. In the case of $Cl^-$, leachates from Lysimeter A and B with bottom ash have high $Cl^-$ concentration whereas leachate produced from Lysimeter C has low $Cl^-$ concentration. In the Lysimeter C with municipal solid waste only, concentration of organic materials in the leachate was much higher than that of leachate produced from the other Lysimeters.
Mineralization of organic N is an important factor in determining the appropriate rate for organic waste application to cropland. The mineralization of organic N was examined using sandy soil amended with three kind of compost (municipal solid waste+biosolid, yard trimmings, yard trimmings+biosolid), respectively. During the 12-week incubation, the mineralization of organic N was determined by analyzing the inorganic N in leachates from unamended and amended soils. Soils amended with com posts made of biosolid had higher initial $NH_4-N$ concentration than unamended soil. Soil amended with compost made of yard trimmings only had slightly lower initial inorganic N concentration than unamended soil. In the soil amended with com post made of yard trimmings+biosolid, however, nitrification rate was enhanced in the first week of incubation. Net N mineralization and nitrification were positive in all treatments. Although the greatest net N mineralization occurred in the soil amended with compost made of yard trimmings+biosolid, the greatest net mineralization and nitrification rates occurred in unamended soil.
The understory vegetation of a Chamaecyparis obtusa plantation is relatively sparse at a valley in Sangkwan-my6n, Wanju-gun, Chiinbuk, Korea, and that of the pure C. obtusa plantation is more sparse than in the C, obtusa-Larix leptolepis plantation. In order to investigate the causes of this difference, this study was carried out both in the field and in the laboratory. Total of 109 taxa, comprising 90 genera and 53 families, were identified in the plantation. But the average number of species above 10% frequency was only 27, and both the number of species and plants per quadrat in the pure C. obtusa plantation were lower than those in the C, obtusa-L. leptolepis plantation. Light intensity, soil pH, and the difference of soil minerals were supposed to be parts of the causes. Soils, litter extracts of C. obtusa and L. leptolepis, and leachates collected by vermiculite beneath C. obtusa canopy for 1 year were tested for the effect on germination and seedling growth of both inside species and outside species in the laboratory. Germination and seedling growth of outside species were more suppressed than those of inside species. Therefore it was found that allelopathic effect of C. obtusa would be responsible for the sparse understory vegetation in the C. oblusa plantation.

A number of different sources, such as composts, leachates, and pig feces samples, were collected from different pig farms in Korea, and several microorganisms were screened for their ability to deodorize the malodorous gases. Consequently, a novel malodorous gases-deodorizing bacterial strain, KJ-108. was isolated, because it was highly abundant in nitrate-supplemented minimal medium ($MM-NO_3^-$) under anaerobic culture conditions. Airtight crimp-sealed serum bottles containing $MM-NO_3^-$ , medium were inoculated with KJ-108. Nitrate concentration was decreased rapidly after 20 h of incubation, and incubation was carried out until nitrite production reached almost zero. Taxonomic identification, including 16S rDNA base sequencing and phylogenetic analysis, indicated that the isolate had $100\%$ homology in its 165 rDNA base sequence with Lactobacillus pentosus. Among the volatile fatty acids, acetic acid contained in large amounts in fresh piggery slurry was decreased by about $40\%$ after 50 h incubation with strain KJ-108. n-Butyric acid, n-valeric acid, and isovaleric acid were gradually decreased, and isobutyric acid and capronic acid were dramatically eliminated at theinitial period with the treatment. Moreover, NH, removal efficiency reached a maximum of $98.5\%$ after 50 h of incubation, but the concentration of $H_2S$ was not changed.
This paper presents an experimental results on the environmental characteristics of waste tire. Experimental program includes a set of laboratory leaching tests and field pilot test for leachate analysis. Laboratory tests were conducted to illustrate how properties such as TOC, pH, turbidity and Zn change with tire sizes and drain conditions. In field pilot test, water samples were collected form a drainage system installed below the tire-reinforced retaining wall and analyzed for chemical quality. Laboratory leaching tests performed on various particle sizes of waste tire indicated that as tire size is increased, the concentration of leachate is decreased. In continuous flow column tests, the concentration of leachate decreased with the number of exposure periods or pore volumes flushed through the waste tire. However, during pause flow column tests, the concentration of leachates were increased with time. Field monitoring of effluent indicated that no significant adverse effects on ground water quality had occurred over a period of 12 months.
The purpose of this study is to provide the ways of recycling of by-product limes as lightweight fill, backfill materials, and lightweight blocks by performing experimental study. New lightweight fill materials and blocks were devised by mixing by-product lime, weathered granite soil, small pieces of waste EPS, and Portland cement. Physical, geotechnical, and environmental properties of the lightweight mixed soils and blocks were analysed by laboratory experiments for mixed samples manufactured with various mixing ratios. KMS tests were also performed to evaluate the concentration variation of the chemical components of the light weight blocks leachates. It is expected that this study will contribute to resolving the problem of by-product lime disposal as well as to recycling the by-product limes as fill materials and blocks.
In the Vicinity of the Sindae-dong waste disposal site in Taejon, the average Cu, pb and Zn concentrations in soils are higher than those in other Korean soils but these are not high enough to cause any harmful effect to human and animal through the crop plants. Copper, Pb and Zn are not detected in the groundwater samples and F, Cl, $NO_2$, $NO_3$ and $SO_4$ concentrations in groundwater samples are lower than drinking water standards. However, the pH of groundwater sample in site D is 5.58 which is not suitable for the drinking water. With the electric resistivity method, the water-containg layers are found in contaminated soils and the resistivity values are considerably low because of the dispersion of plume by the leak of leachates. According to the results from the magnetic survey method, the anomalous values of the total geomagnetic fields and their gradients are found in the sampling site of low resistivity and high trace element concentrations.
Land application of treated palm oil mill effluent (TPOME) could be used as an alternative tertiary wastewater treatment process. However, phenolic compounds in TPOME might be leached to the environment. This study investigated the ability of grasses on reducing phenolic compounds in the leachate after TPOME application. Several pasture grasses in soil pots were compared after irrigating with TPOME from stabilization ponds, which contained 360-630 mg/L phenolic compounds. The number of soil bacteria in planted pots increased over time with the average of $10^8CFU/g$ for mature grasses, while only $10^4-10^6CFU/g$ were found in the unplanted control pots. The leachates from TPOME irrigated grass pots contained lower amounts of phenolic compounds and had lower phytotoxicity than that of control pots. The phenol removal efficiency of grass pots was ranged 67-93% and depended on grass cultivars, initial concentration of phenolic compounds and frequency of irrigations. When compared to water irrigation, TPOME led to an increased phenolic compounds accumulation in grass tissues and decreased biomass of Brachiaria hybrid and Brachiaria humidicola but not Panicum maximum. Consequently, the application of TPOME could be conducted on grassland and the grass species should be selected based on the utilization of grass biomass afterward.
