This study compared evacuation effectiveness between the conventional school auditorium plan and a suggested hypothetical plan that was generated by a mathematical model, which is commonly applied in the field of industrial engineering. Recent school buildings became much more complicated in floor planning due to new social needs and modern curriculum than the old days. Nevertheless, architect's approach to floor composition in terms of fire emergency evacuation planning, still has no relation to optimized effective but relies more on an conventional school planning. Therefore, since school buildings are much more likely to be exposed to any fire related events than any other building types, emergency exit effectiveness based on spatial composition has to be seriously evaluated with a scientific method. The algorithm, which acquires the number of persons in each spatial type(node) per floor and the minimum physical distance between spatial types(arc), can propose the most optimized spatial layout per floor regarding emergency evacuation event. Consequently, this study evaluated school's fire exit effectiveness focusing on auditorium area with the scientific tool and suggested the most reliable spatial layout regarding possibile emergency evacuation event.

Construction site layout is attracting attention as efficient use of construction site space greatly affects the duration and cost of the overall construction. Therefore, there are many studies that automate and optimize construction site layout planning. However, the usability of construction site, which consists of goal variables of the studies, has still been unknown. Therefore, the authors present the evaluation criteria for usability of construction site layout and evaluate the usability of domestic construction sites through user survey. Furthermore, the difference in usability between construction site managers and construction site workers was confirmed. As a result of the survey, domestic construction site layout had a low effectiveness and had the lowest score in the environment category. In addition, construction site workers scored lower overall than construction site managers. Through such usability evaluation results, it contributed to the construction site layout theory by assessing current construction site layout practice and suggesting an improvement direction for automating site layout planning.

We consider a facility layout problem with the objective of minimizing total transportation distance, which is the sum of rectilinear distances between facilities weighted by the frequency of trips between the facilities. It is assumed that facilities are required to have rectangular shapes and there is no empty space between the facilities in the layout. In this study, a graph theoretic heuristic is developed for the problem. In the heuristic, planar graphs are constructed to represent adjacencies between the facilities and then the graphs are converted to block layouts on a continual plane using a layout construction module. (Therefore, each graph corresponds to a layout.) An initial layout is obtained by constructing a maximal weighted planar graph and then the layout is improved by changing the planar graph. A simulated annealing algorithm is used to find a planar graph which gives the best layout. To show the performance of the proposed heuristic, computational experiments are done on randomly generated test problems and results are reported.

The objective of this study is to develop an improved algorithm for layout problems. Computerized facility layout program was also applied to solve the layout problem in locomotive maintenance workshop. The current facility layout is structured in the large space without considerations of many variable factors. For this reason, effectiveness of layout results in loss on effective space utility. This study is to develop an algorithm in the consideration of importance weight and desirable shape of specific department in the computerized layout planning and quantitative relationship rating between each department was used. Standard process duration of locomotive maintenance workshop was used to select the main activities of locomotive maintenance work. This study could generate more efficient facility layout design to reduce the number of movement frequency and travel distance in maintenance workshop.

This paper describes a research work of developing automated progressive process planning system for working electric products. An approach to the CAD system in based on the knowledge-based rules. Knowledge for the CAD system is formulated from plasticity theories experimental results and the empirical knowledge of field experts. The system has been written in AutoLISP on the AutoCAD with a personal computer and is composed of three main modules which are input and shape treatment flat pattern layout and strip layout module. Based on knowledge-based rules the system is design by considering several factors such as radius and angle of bend material and thickness of product complexities of blank geometry and punch profile bending sequence and availability of press. Strip layout drawing automatically generated by piercing with punch profiles divided into for external area is simulated in 3-D graphic forms including bending sequences for the product with piercing and bending. Results obtained using the modules enable the manufacture of electronic products to be more efficient in this field.

This paper describes a research work of developing a computer-aided design of blanking and piercing for irregular-shaped sheet metal products. An approach to the CAD system is based on the knowledge-based rules. Knowledge for the CAD system is formulated from plasticity theories, experimental results and the empirical knowledge of field experts. The system has been written in AutoLISP on the AutoCAD with a personal computer and is composed of four main modules, which are input and shape treatment, flat pattern layout, production feasibility check, and strip layout module. Based on knowledge-based rules, the system is designed by considering several factors, such as radius and angle of bend. material and thickness of product, complexities of blank geometry and punch profile, and availability of press. This system is capable of unfolding a formed sheet metal part to give flat pattern and automatically account for the adjustment of bend allowances to match tooling requirements by checking the dimensions and relationships of parts of the folded product. Also this system can carry out a process planning which is obtained from results of irregular shape of product that was successful in production feasibility check module according to flat pattern layout and generate strip layout drawing in graphic forms. The developed system provides its efficiency for flat pattern layout, and strip layout for the irregularly shaped sheet metal products.

The major two steps required to design a cellular layout are cell formation and cell layout. Because of the differences between manufacturing and assembly operations, the logic of cell formation and cell layout between an FMS and an FAS is not the same. Since the time for the assembly operations is usualaly relatively short, the transfer time is thus very crucial for the performance of assembly systems. Transfore in a cellular FAS it is more important to eliminate backtracking operations in assembly planning, not to allow intercellular movements in cell formation, and to arrange machines according to assembly sequence in cell layout. This study presents a method for the integrated layout design in cellular FASs considering the characteristics of FAS, layout, and production factors.

Determining the layout of temporary facilities that support construction activities at a site is an important planning activity, as layout can significantly affect cost, quality of work, safety, and other aspects of the project. The construction site layout problem involves difficult combinatorial optimization. Recently, various artificial intelligence(AI)-based algorithms have been applied to solving many complex optimization problems, including neural networks(NN), genetic algorithms(GA), and swarm intelligence(SI) which relates to the collective behavior of social systems such as honey bees and birds. This study proposes a site facility layout optimization algorithm based on self-organizing maps(SOM). Computational experiments are carried out to justify the efficiency of the proposed method and compare it with particle swarm optimization(PSO). The results show that the proposed algorithm can be efficiently employed to solve the problem of site layout.

According to the changes in society, the knowledge industrial center, which is a factory related to the manufacturing industry, is now including various programs, such as information and communication knowledge. This study defined the knowledge industrial center related law into three periods: deduct layout planning type and outside space composition elements by previous research; case analysis; and suggestions of the direction of layout planning and outside space plan. As a result of the analysis, first, before 1999, the layout of the building is made mainly with a car, but depending on the form of the site, it is configured as a centered, side layout. Second, in the case of distribution, the support facility on the lower part is integrated and the factory on the higher part is distributed, so it is partly integrated and the building is unified. Third, beginning with the activation of privately owned public space in a semi-industrial district according to architecture regulations in 1999, the outside space is wider but the construction area is reduced, so the outside space composition has been changing in a similar manner to the planning methods of business facilities, such as office buildings.

This paper describes a research work of developing computer-aided design of lead frame, semiconductor, with blanking operation which is very precise for progressive working. Approach to the system is based on the knowledge-based rules. Knowledge for the system is formulated from plasticity theories, experimental results and the empirical knowledge of field experts. This system has been written in AutoLISP on the AutoCAD using a personal computer and in I-DEAS Drafting Programming Language on the I-DEAS Master Series Drafting with Workstation, HP9000/715(64) and tool kit on the ESPRIT. Transference of data among AutoCAD, I-DEAS Master Series Drafting, and ESPRIT is accomplished by DXF(drawing exchange format) and IGES(initial graphics exchange specification) methods. This system is composed of six modules, which are input and shape treatment, production feasibility check, strip-layout, die-layout, modelling, and post-processor modules. The system can design process planning and Die design considering several factors and generate NC data automatically according to drawings of die-layout module. As forming process of high precision product and die design system using 2-D geometry recognition are integrated with technology of process planning, die design, and CAE analysis, standardization of die part in die design and process planning of high pression product for semiconductor lead frame is possible to set. Results carried out in each module will provide efficiencies to the designer and the manufacturer of lead frame, semiconductor.
