The stresses and deflections in a laminated rectangular plate under thermal vibration are determined by using the moving least squares differential quadrature (MLSDQ) method based on the first order shear deformation theory. The weighting coefficients used in MLSDQ approximation are obtained through a fast computation of the MLS shape functions and their partial derivatives. By using this method, the governing differential equations are transformed into sets of linear homogeneous algebraic equations in terms of the displacement components at each discrete point. Boundary conditions are implemented through discrete grid points by constraining displacements, bending moments and rotations of the plate. Solving this set of algebraic equations yields the displacement components. Then substituting these displacements into the constitutive equation, we obtain the stresses. The approximate solutions for stress and deflection of laminated plate with cross layer under thermal load are obtained. Numerical results show that the MLSDQ method provides rapidly convergent and accurate solutions for calculating the stresses and deflections in a multi-layered plate of cross ply laminate subjected to thermal vibration of sinusoidal temperature including shear deformation with a few grid points.
In this paper, three dimensional dynamic infinite elements are developed for the soil-structure interaction analysis in multi-layered halfspace. For the efficient discretization of 3-D for field regions, five types of dynamic infinite elements are developed. They are the horizontal, vertical, horizontal comer, vertical comer and horizontal/vertical corner infinite elements. The shape functions of the infinite elements are based on approximate expressions of analytical solutions of propagating waves in the infinite region. Numerical example analyses are presented for compliances of rigid circular and square plates to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed infinite elements.
Motivated by needs such as those in the aerospace industry, this paper demonstrates ability to significantly increase buckling loads of perforated composite laminated plates by synergizing FEM and a genetic optimization algorithm (GA). Plate geometry is discretized into specially-developed 3D degenerated eight-node shell isoparametric layered composite elements. General shell theory, involving incremental nonlinear finite element equilibrium equation, is employed. Fiber orientation within individual plies of each element is controlled independently by the genetic algorithm. Eigen buckling analysis is performed using the subspace iteration method. Available results demonstrate the approach is superior to more conventional methodologies such as modifying ply thickness or the stacking sequence of individual rectilinear plies having common fiber orientation through the plate.
A fuel cell is an electrochemical device in which the energy of a chemical reaction is converted directly into electricity. By combining hydrogen fuel with oxygen from air, electricity is formed, without combustion of any form. Water and heat are the only by-products when hydrogen is used as the fuel source. Fuel cell stack consists of multi-layered unit cells. A unit cell consists of MEA and bipolar plates. The end plate of fuel cell stack should give a uniform distributed pressure to multi unit cell layers so as to reduce the contact resistance and to prevent the leakage of reactant gases and the damage of multi layer components. The current end plate is redundantly large and heavy. It makes the power per unit volume reduced. Topology optimization of end plate is conducted for mass reduction and enhancement of bending rigidity. The evaluation of the current design and the recommendation for the future design is remarked.
The numerical study was carried out to effectively cool Induction motor applied to a washing machine. The outer rotor made of steel periodically spins up and down. The stator consists of the thin layered iron plates and copper coil. The effective cooling system is necessary to solve the reliability problem caused by the electric losses at the coil and the iron plate. Because the heat transfer rate of the natural convection in partially open space is generally low, thus it is necessary to enhance the heat transfer using rotating perforated plate. The flow phenomena around the motor are very complex due to the motor geometry and the outer rotor motion. The mixed convection takes place due to the slow rotation speed. The three dimensional flow simulation was performed using rotating reference frame technique and Boussinesq approximation but the radiation effect was neglected. It was found that the angle and direction of the cooling blades play an important role in the stator temperature.

Procedures are investigated by which nonlinear finite element shell analysis algorithms can be simplified to provide more cost effective approximate analyses of orthogonally-reinforced concrete flat plate structures. Two alternative effective stiffness formulations, and an unbalanced force formulation, are described. These are then implemented into a nonlinear shell analysis algorithm. Nonlinear geometry, three-dimensional layered stress analyses, and other general formulations are bypassed to reduce the computational burden. In application to standard patch test problems, these simplified approximate analysis procedures are shown to provide reasonable accuracy while significantly reducing the computational effort. Corroboration studies using various simple and complex test specimens provide an indication of the relative accuracy of the constitutive models utilized. The studies also point to the limitations of the approximate formulations, and identify situations where one should revert back to full nonlinear shell analyses.
The effect of mcirostructure on the electrical properties of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was analyzed by modeling layer arrangements and mixed phase structure. The YSZ thin films were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering using 30mol% YSZ and 8 mol% YSZ targets with yttrium pellets on porous alumina substrates. The structure, composition and electricla properties of the YSZ films were investigated as functions of sputtering conditons and layer arrangements by XRD, TEM, XPS and acimpedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the triple palyered YSZ films had highermicrohardness, lower compressive stress state and higher ionic conductivity by one order than single and double layered YSZ films. However, sputtered YSZ films have low conductivity compared to YSZ pellets or doctor bladed YSZ thin plates. These results were probably due to the influence of insulating alumina substrates, impractical for most stacking geometries and inductance induced by relatively long platinum, lead wire on YSZ conductivity.
In this paper, stacked piezoelectric ceramics were used for obtaining a large vibration for a small ultrasonic motor which is useable for the both linear drive and rotational drive. We studied this motor through the finite element analysis method and the simulated driving characteristics were presented. As results, the displacement of the tip of the stator was increased when the layers of the ceramics were increased. Also, by inserting additional aluminum plates between the ceramics and the aluminum bar, the displacement were amplified. In this model, two voltages which have 90 degree phase difference were applied for the bi-directional movement.
