  • The vertical distribution of pore water pressure in the highly saturated sand layer under the oscillating water pressure (water wave) is studied theoretically and experimentally. By experiments it is shown that the water pressure acting on the sand surface propagates into the sand layer with the damping in amplitude and the lag in phase, and that the liquefaction, the state that the effective stress becomes zero, occurs under certain conditions. These experimental results are explained fairly well by the same theoretical treatment as for the ground water problems in the elastic aquifer. The main characteristics of liquefaction clarified by the analysis are as follows: 1) The depth of the liquefied layer increases with the increase of the amplitude and the frequency of the oscillating water pressure. 2) The increase of the volume of the water and the air in the layer increases the liquefied depth. Especially the very small amount of the air affects the liquefaction significantly. 3) The liquefied depth decrease rapidly with the increase of the compressibility coefficient of the sand. 4) In the range beyond a certain value of the permeability coefficient the liquefied depth decrease with the increase of the coefficient.

  • In this paper, a methodology for determination of the thickness of layer on a substrate using reflection acoustic microscope has been presented. It has been shown that the amplitude and the phase of reflection coefficient of the layer-substrate composite has been used for measurement of layer thickness, acoustic velosity, mass density of the layer material. The reflection acoustic microscope operating at a frequency of 15 MHz has been used for the experiment and the measured acoustic impedance value for aluminum sample has agreed with the published data, and the measured layer thickness for silver-glass composite has agreed with that measured using micrometer.

  • MgO protection layer in ac PDP(plasma display panel) prevents the dielectric layer from ion bombarding in discharge plasma. The MgO layer also has the additional important role in lowering the firing voltage due to a large secondary electron emission coefficient. Until now, the MgO protection layer is mainly prepared by E-beam evaporation. In this study, MgO protection layer is prepared on dielectric layer of ac PDP cell by reactive R.F magnetron sputtering with Mg target under various conditions of oxygen partial pressure. Discharge characteristics of PDP is also studied as a parameter of MgO preparation conditions. The sputtered MgO shows the better discharge characteristics compared with MgO deposited by E-beam evaporator.

  • Multi-layer diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were deposited by 13.56 MHz r.f. PACVD method. Multi-layer DLC film was composed of 2.5 $mu extrm{m}$ thick pure DLC filml and 0.2$\mu\textrm{m}$ thick Si incorporated DLC (Si-DLC) film as a surface layer. Tribological behaviors of the multi-layer DLC film were investigated with a ball-on-disk type tribometer in ambient atmosphere using AISI 52100 steel ball. Low friction coefficient (<0.1) period increased with increasing the Si content in the surface Si-DLC film. The wear rate after 44,000 cycles and 158,400 cycles were the $2.5\times10^{-8}\sim1.8\times10^{-7}\textrm{mm}^3$/rev. and $7.1\times10^{-9}\sim1.8\times10^{-8}\textrm{mm}^3$/rev.,respectively. The wear rate of the multi-layer DLC film after 158,400 cycles was about 2 times smaller than that of pure DLC films of 2.7 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness. This high wear resistance and low friction coefficient was caused by the formation of Si oxide layer on the wear scar surface, as confirmed by the debris composition analysis. It was further shown that this si oxide debris layer on the wear scar surface is formed again even after removing the debris of the steel ball, which maintain the low friction coefficient between multi-layer DLC films and steel ball.

  • This study analyzed the variability and correlation between ground-level air pollutant concentrations and the atmospheric mixing layer height using data from four types of air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and O3) collected at AirKorea monitoring stations nationwide over a five-year period (2018~2022), and aerosol backscatter data observed by the Vaisala CL31 to derive atmospheric mixing layer heights. The five-year trends and variability of ground-level air pollutant concentrations under seasonal and hourly conditions were examined, as well as the seasonal distribution and diurnal variation of the atmospheric mixing layer height. Five correlation coefficient methodologies were applied to analyze the correlations between ground-level air pollutants and atmospheric mixing layer height under various seasonal and hourly conditions, confirming the dilution effect of the atmospheric mixing layer height. The results showed that PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 generally had negative correlations with the atmospheric mixing layer height, while O3 showed a strong positive correlation up to an altitude of 1,200~1,500 meters, and a negative correlation beyond that altitude. It was also shown that a single high concentration event (e.g., PM10) can alter the overall correlation. The correlation can also vary depending on the characteristics of the correlation coefficient methodology, highlighting the importance of applying the appropriate methodology for each case during the analysis process.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the effective energy of a polyenegetic X-ray beam. The half value layer(HVL) of aluminum for 80 kVp X-ray beam was measured by using optically stimulated luminescent nanoDot dosimeters(OSLnDs). The linear attenuation coefficient(${\mu}$) was calculated using the measured HVL. And the mass attenuation coefficient(${\mu}/{\rho}$) was obtained by dividing the linear attenuation coefficient by the density(${\rho}$) of aluminum. The effective energy($E_{eff}$) of the obtained mass attenuation coefficient was determined using data of the X-ray mass attenuation coefficients for photon energies of aluminum given by National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST). As a result, the HVL value is 2.262 mmAl. The ${\mu}$ value is $3.06cm^{-1}$. The ${\mu}/{\rho}$ value is $1.114cm^2/g$. And the $E_{eff}$ value was determined at 29.79 keV.

  • The electro-optical characteristics of several functional layers over the MgO protective layer were studied during the continuous discharge of an AC-PDP. In order to observe the degradation of each functional layer on the MgO protection layer, we measured the surface morphology, cathodoluminescence (CL) spectrum, the secondary electron emission coefficient (${\gamma}$) and the discharge characteristics after 500 hours of discharge during the operation of the AC-PDP.

  • A CPM (computational preston tube method) was developed to measure wall shear stress in a transitional boundary layer on a flat plate using Preston tubes. Correlation for the displacement factor of Preston tubes was improved for a CPM to be used in the transitional boundary layer. The distribution of skin-friction coefficient was reasonably predicted in the uniform free stream of 3.1% turbulence intensity. Reasonable and accurate estimation of displacement factor of Preston tubes was found to be of crucial importance for the CPM, especially in the laminar boundary layer. The mean velocity profiles of the boundary layer on the plate were also measured and presented.

  • A nickel layer was deposited onto the PZT thin films, serving both as a selective radiation absorption layer and as a top electrode. The absorption properties of such nickel coated multi-layered infrared detectors were studied in the visible and infrared wavelength ranges. The optimal thickness of the nickel layer on our substrate was 10nm. The maximum absorption coefficient of the deposited 10nm thick nickel layer was 0.7 at a 632nm wavelength. However, a striking asymmetric polarization hysteresis loop was observed in these PZT thin films with nickel as the top electrode. This asymmetric polarization was attributed to the difference between the dynamic pyroelectric responses in these Ni/PZT/Pt films poled either positively or negatively before the measurement. A positively poled film showed a 40% higher voltage response than a negatively poled detector.
