Removal of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) of Deodorant by Adding a Metal Oxide to the Essential Oils (식물정유물질에 금속산화물을 첨가한 탈취제의 휘발성유기화합물질의 제거에 관한 연구)

  • VOCs emissions from industries cause the air pollution and odor. In the industrial facilities, the existing odor treatment techniques have limits and problems. In this study, the optimum essential oil and metal oxide selected by screening test. lavender oil, cypress oil and TiO2 were determined by deodorant materials and those were blended by 5%, 45%, 10%, respectively. In addition, the result of batch type experiments depending on the dilution rate, injection, rate, temperature showed that the optimum condition of deodorant is 6 mL of injection rate, and 200 times of dilution rate and the removal efficiency increased in proportion with temperature. In addition, the activation energy was calculated from the rate equation, which appeared in the 3-4 times lower than conventional deodorants.

Effects of Aromatherapy on Stress Responses, Autonomic Nervous System Activity and Blood Pressure in the Patients Undergoing Coronary Angiography: A Non-Randomized Controlled Trial (아로마요법이 관상동맥조영술 대상자의 스트레스, 자율신경계, 혈압에 미치는 효과: 비무작위 대조군설계)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of aromatherapy on stress responses, autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity, and blood pressure in patients hospitalized to receive coronary angiography (CAG). Methods: A non-equivalent control group with a pretest-posttest design was used. The subjects were patients admitted to the day angiography room to receive CAG at E University Hospital (34 in the experimental group and 30 in the control group). The experimental group treatment was inhalation of the aroma oil blended with lavender, ylang-ylang, and neroli at a ratio of 4:2:1 twice before and after CAG. The measurements of stress index, ANS activity, and blood pressure were performed 5 times as follows: at admission, at pre-CAG after treatment I, at post-CAG, 2 hours after treatment II, and 4 hours after treatment II. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U Test and repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results: Significant interactions in the high frequency of ANS (F=5.58, p=.005) were observed between group and time. Stress index (z=2.14, p=.016), systolic blood pressure (z=4.14, p<.005), and diastolic blood pressure (z=3.28, p=.001) were significantly different between the experimental and control groups after 4 hours of treatment II. Conclusion: The findings showed that aromatherapy was not effective before CAG, but was effective after CAG. Therefore, aromatherapy can be used as a nursing intervention for patients receiving CAG.

Effects of Aroma-Necklace Application on Perceived Stress, Symptoms of Stress and Changes in Autonomic Nervous System among Nursing Students in Clinical Training (아로마목걸이 착용이 임상실습 중인 간호학생의 지각된 스트레스, 스트레스 증상 및 자율신경계 변화에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of aroma-necklace application on perceived stress, symptoms of stress and changes in autonomic nervous system among nursing students in clinical training. Methods: A research design for this study was a non-equivalent control group, non-synchronized pre-post test. The experimental group (n=39) underwent aroma inhalation by necklace which contains an essential oil mixture of lavender and sweet orange mixture in ratio of 2:1 for 2 weeks while the control group (n=36) received placebo therapy. The data were collected using self-administered questionnaires and measurement of heart rate variability (HRV) and analyzed using the PASW 18.0 program. Results: The perceived stress scores and scores of peripheral manifestations in the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group. All indices of HRV were significantly different between the two groups. LF norm and LF/HF ratio in the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group, and HF norm in the experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group. Conclusion: It can be suggested that aroma-necklace application was effective in decreasing perceived stress and peripheral manifestations of stress and in changing HRV indices among nursing students in clinical training.

The Effects of Aroma Inhalation Therapy on Anxiety and Heart Rate Variability in the Patients Undergoing Urodynamic Study (아로마 흡입요법이 요역동학검사 환자의 불안과 심박변이도에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was to identify the effects of aroma inhalation therapy on heart rate variability and anxiety in the context of urodynamics study. Method: The data were collected from 64 patients who were receiving urodynamics at the C University Medical Center in Seoul, 23 in the experimental group, 22 in the placebo group and 19 in the control group. In the experiment, the subjects of the experimental group inhaled a mixture of lavender and bergamot for 5 min, the subjects of the placebo group inhaled geranyl acetate oil for 5 min and the subjects of the control group relaxed for 5 min. The instruments used in this study included the state anxiety inventory and heart rate variability. Result: The score of state anxiety was no significant differences between the three groups after aroma-inhalation. Also, the sympathetic nerve activity and parasympathetic nerve activity was no significant differences between the three groups after aroma-inhalation. Autonomic nerve balance was maintained significantly in the experimental group as compared to the control groups after aroma-inhalation. Conclusion: The aroma inhalation therapy was very effective in balancing the autonomic nervous system in the patients undergoing urodynamic study.

The Effects of Aromatherapy Hands Massage on the Preoperative Anxiety of Hemorrhoidectomy (아로마테라피 손마사지가 치핵절제술 전 환자의 불안감소에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The Purpose of this study was to explain the effects of aromatherapy massage on the preoperative anxiety of hemorrhoidectomy patients, and to provide the effective and holistic nursing care to them. Method: The research design was a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The data were collected during the period from November 1 to November 30, 2003 at K-Hospital in Seoul. The subjects were fifty patients who were to have a hemorrhoidectomy under general anesthesia. They were assigned to two groups, 25 subjects to the experimental group and 25 subjects to the control group. The State Anxiety Inventory tool was used to measure state-anxiety on all patients the day before surgery. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and pulse rate were measured on the day before surgery and the preoperative period. The experimental group received aromatherapy massage on the hand with lavender oil. Data were analyzed by $x^2$ test, independent t-test, paired t-test. Result: 1. Hypothesis 1, that the level of preoperative state-anxiety of the experimental group who received aromatherapy massage would be lower than that of the control group who did not received aromatherapy was supported(p=.047). 2. Hypothesis 2was that the Physiological index of the preoperative anxiety of the experimental group who received aromatherapy would be lower than that of the control group who did not received aromatherapy. The 1st subhypothesis that "the level of the preoperative systolic and diastolic blood pressure of the experimental group would be less than that of the control group" was not supported. Conclusion: Aromatherapy massage can be regarded as a partially effective nursing intervention that relives the preoperative anxiety of surgical patients and stabilizes vital signs.

The Effects of Aroma Hand Massage on Pruritus, Fatigue and Stress of Hemodialysis Patients (아로마 손마사지가 혈액투석 환자의 소양증, 피로 및 스트레스에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of aroma hand massage on pruritus, fatigue and stress of the patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: This study was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Study sample was conveniently recruited from two hospitals(28 for experimental and 30 for control group). The experimental group went through aroma hand massage on hand without AVF for 5 min for 12 times mixed with Lavender, Chamomile and Geranium oils in the ratio of 4 : 4 : 2, which was diluted 3% with sweet almond crrier oil 100 ml. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: The 1st hypothesis, 'Experimental group who has received aroma hand massage will have lower rate of pruritus than the control group' was accepted(t = -5.084, p = .001). The 2nd hypothesis, 'Experimental group who has received aroma hand massage will have lower rate of fatigue than the control group' was accepted(t = -2.557, p = .015). The 3rd hypothesis, 'Experimental group who has received aroma hand massage will have lower rate of stress than the control group' was accepted(t = -5.537, p = .001). Conclusion: The aroma hand massage has shown to be an effective nursing intervention to reduce the pruritus, fatigue and stress among patients undergoing hemodialysis. Therefore, the massage is needed to continuously be applied to hemodialysis patients to improve their quality of life.

The Effect of Massage to the Different Regions of the Body on the Relaxation in Healthy Women (부위별 마사지가 건강한 성인여성의 신체이완에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was to determine whether the massage would enhance the physical relaxation in healthy women, and whether the effects of massage on the relaxation would be different by the applied regions of the body. Five healthy young women participated in the two test sessions of back and lower extremities massage in a chamber controlled at an air temperature of $28^{\circ}C$ and a relative humidity of $50{\pm}5%$. The slow stroke massage with lavender aroma oil for 30 minutes was applied to the subjects with a 10-min. and a 20-min rest time before and after the application, respectively. Rectal temperature decreased and the chest and thigh skin temperatures increased with the massage application, and the changes of the temperatures were greater with lower extremities massage than with back massage. Heart rate also decreased during massage period and tended to be lower with lower extremities massage. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased with lower extremities massage. These results show that the slow stroke massage for 30 minutes can induce physiological responses related with the enhanced relaxation in healthy women, and lower extremities massage is more effective on the physical relaxation rather than back massage.

  • Essential oils aims to rejuvenate and beautify medical skin care the body through the use of essential oils, and generally to improve our outward appearance. Much of this section fouses on the different methods by which essential oils can be used to improve the complexion or to treat specific medical care skin conditions. Beauty, however, is not just skin-deep. The condition of the medical care express the overall health of an individual. A relaxed attitude, together with a well-balanced diet, enough exercise, and a daily intake of plenty of spring water or herbal teas, all help to keep the system in top condition. Essential oils is a healing art which has powerful effects on both mind and body. The vital element in essential oils is the pure oils which are extracted from various part of different plants. Medical aromatherapy care is holistic, working mainly on the nervous system and including the head and body as part of the same treatment. Using pressure points along the spine, Medical aromatherapy care on the autonomic nervous system and has an immediate effect of relexation. In directly it also acts on mood. Many of the medical massage movements help lymphatic drainage. Essential oils have many different qualities; they can be relaxing or invigorating and are generally antisepic and antibacterial. Medical aromatherapy care can have psychological benefits. The power of essences in healing has been recognized in the treatment of insect bites. Clove, thyme, sandalwood, and lavender are a few of the essences that have antiseptic. Essential oils effect the dry skin for small visual pores, dull matte finish, rough sandy feeling, tantskin. Essential oils effect the mature/sun damaged skin for some red or couperose areas, loose saggy skin, exposure to a lot of ultraviolet light. Essential oils effect the medical care nomal skin good elasticity, healthy color(good circulation), smooth terture.

Characteristics and Release Behaviors of Aromatic Poly(vinyl acetate) Nanoparticles Prepared by Emulsification-Diffusion Technique (유화-확산법에 의해 얻어진 폴리(비닐 아세테이트) 나노 방향 입자의 특성 및 방출 거동)

  • In this study, nano-sized poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) particles containing lavender oil as a core material were prepared by using emulsification-diffusion method. Effects of experimental parameters on the characteristics and the release behavior were examined with a field emission- scanning electron microscope, an electrophoretic light scattering spectrophotometer, a visible spectrophotometer and a high performance liquid chromatography The resulting aromatic particles could be prepared in nano-sized globular shapes with the mean particle size of 224 nm by controlling the experimental conditions. From the evaluation of release properties of aromatic PVAc nanoparticles with or without PVA coating, it was found that the aromatic particles coated with PVA show more sustaining and stable release behaviors. Our research on aromatic PVAc nanoparticles could be applied for durable fragrant finishing for textiles, leather products and so on.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of aromatherapy on headache, anxiety, and serum cortisol level in middle-aged women with recurrent headaches. Methods: Nineteen patients in the intervention group and 21 in the control group participated in the exercise. They were randomly selected volunteers whose average headache score over 6 months with above 4 points on the visual analogue scale (VAS). The experimental group received aromatherapy for 5 days; inhalation (3 times per day) and an application on the neck and both shoulders (one time per day). Prior and post treatment scores in headache, anxiety, and measurement of serum cortisol in experimental group were measured. Then, these were compared with the control group. The headache score was measured by VAS; anxiety score was measured by State Trait Anxiety Inventory; serum cortisol was measured by Radio-Immune-Assay method. Results: Decrease in headache, anxiety, and serum cortisol level in the experimental group was greater than those in the control group. Conclusion: It confirmed aromatherapy is effective in reducing headache, anxiety, and serum cortisol level.
