  • The structure of small launch vehicle can be divided into engine section and payload section. This paper introduces modal test of the payload section of small launch vehicle which is composed to satellite, PLA (Payload Adapter), VEB (Vehicle Equipment Bay), KMS (Kick Motor Support) and KM (Kick Motor). From this test, dynamic properties of the 2nd stage structure of small launch vehicle can be obtained. In this test, to simulate free-free boundary condition, test object was hung by 4 bungee cords and excited by using impact hammer Modal test data are analyzed by using TDAS(Test Data Analysis Software). As the result, modal parameters and mode shapes below 100Hz of the 2nd stage of small launch vehicle were identified.

  • Intense acoustic load is generated when a launch vehicle lifts off, causing the damaging vibrations at the launch vehicle or satellite within the fairing. This paper is concerned with the prediction of lift-off acoustic loads for a launch vehicle. As a test example, the lift-off acoustic load on the Korean launch vehicle, NARO, is predicted by the existing calculation tool, the modified Eldred's second method. Although the acoustic sources, assumed as point sources, are to be located along the center line of the exhaust plume when using the Eldred's prediction method, the exact location of the deflected center line of exhaust gas flow is not usually known. To search for the most appropriate source positions, six models of source line distribution are suggested and the acoustic load prediction results from these models are compared with the actual measurements. It is found that the predicted sound pressure spectrum of the Naro is the most similar to the measured data when the centerline of the turbulent kinetic energy contour is used as the source line.

  • Acoustic test of the payload fairing of Korea satellite launch vehicle was conducted to verify the performance of acoustic protection system installed inside the payload fairing. This paper briefly introduces the acoustic test procedures and its results. Overall 148 dB acoustic loads were exerted on the payload fairing structures which mated with the upper stage structure of the launch vehicle. In order to verify the increase of insertion loss by the acoustic protection system, two kinds of test were performed. One is conducted with acoustic protection system and the other without acoustic protection system. Internal acoustic loads as well as external ones were measured and the measured insertion losses were compared with the requirement. The results showed that the acoustic protection system increases the insertion loss by more than 6 dB above 125 Hz. They also indicated that some design modification of Helmholtz resonator array is required to increase the insertion loss at a cavity resonant frequency.

  • On the basis of the development of KSLV-1, KoDSat was designed and manufactured to demonstrate the performance of KSLV-1. KoDSat is exposed to a severe vibrational environment at launch. The structural reliability of KoDSat has to be verified using vibrational test. The structural compatibility and verification of components between analysis and test can be proved using environmental vibration test. In this paper, we review the structural characteristic of thruster control unit for a space launch vehicle and design TCU housing using mathematical model. In order to verify the structural compatibility and reliability, half-sine shock, random and sing sweep vibration test was performed. Especially, sing sweep vibration test result is compared with analysis result and mathematical model is verified.

  • The satellite electronic equipment is exposed to high level random vibration environment during the launch of spacecraft. The random vibration can cause damage of electronic equipment. Thus very careful consideration on the launch environment, especially for high level random vibration, is required in the design stage of transponder equipments of communication satellite. For the structural integrity of the communication satellite transponder equipment under qualification level random vibration, Finite Element analysis was carried out using the commercial code, MSC/Nastran and ANSYS and stress levels are presented. In order to validate the femodel, modal test was also performed and compared with numerical results.

  • Launch vehicles and satellites experience severe vibration and pyroshock during the flight phase. These severe dynamic loading could result in the malfunction of electric devices which equipped in the launch vehicle and satellite. In this paper, mesh washer isolators are applied to attenuate these severe shock and vibration and isolation performances are enhanced by applying pseudoelasitic SMA wire material. Through random vibration and ground pyroshock tests, outstanding isolation performances are studied. Especially, comparison of isolation performances due to the change of pre-compressive displacement of mesh washer itself are suggested and applicablity to the adaptive vibration control are confirmed.

  • Pyro-shock generally refers to the severe mechanical transients caused by the detonation of an ordnance device on a structure. Such device on a structure, including linear explosive, and point explosive are widely used to accomplish in-flight separation of structural elements on aerospace vehicle. And they are a significant cause of launch vehicle failures. The launch vehicle being developed in Korea also uses the explosive for separation events. In this paper, the isolator equipped to small satellite launch vehicle made of PTFE(Teflon) is developed to reduce the separation shock. The test to measure dynamic stiffness of PTFE isolator is performed. This test enables us to find the frequency range of PTFE isolator. And,, pyre-shock test using explosive to evaluate the performance of PTFE isolator is executed. from this study, the isolator conformed to frequency range and load requirement is developed using PTFE instead of rubber.

  • At launch, satellites are exposed to various types of structural loads, such as quasi-static loads, sinusoidal vibrations, acoustic/random vibrations, and shocks. The launch environment test is aimed at verifying the structural stability of the test object against the launch environment. Various types of launch environments are simulated by simple vibration, acoustic, and shock tests considering possible test conditions in ground. However, the difference between the launch environment and the test environment is one of the causes of excessive testing. To prevent overtesting, a notching technique that adjusts the frequency range and the input load considering the design load is applied. For notching, specific procedures are established considering the satellite development concept, selected launch vehicle, higher system requirements, and test target level. In this study, the notching method, established procedure, and development of a notching toolkit for efficient testing are described.

  • A nanosatellite designed by the Korea Microgravity Science Laboratory (KMSL) is currently under development. The KMSL nanosatellite is designed to perform two different scientific missions in space. To successfully complete missions, a variety of tests must be conducted to verify the performance of the designed satellite before launch. As part of the qualification test campaign, the KMSL nanosatellite underwent high level vibrational tests (to comply with Falcon 9 qualification level) to demonstrate the integrity of the system. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the primary structure and all electronic and mechanical components can withstand the vibrations and the loads experienced during the launch period. To this end, the KMSL nanosatellite was exposed to static and dynamic loads and various types of vibrations that are inevitably produced during the space vehicle launch period. The vibration test results clearly demonstrated that all avionics and mechanical components can withstand the vibrations and the loads applied to the KMSL nanosatellite's body through a Pico-satellite Orbital Deployer (POD).
