  • The KSLV-I satellite launch vehicle will be launched in a space center currently under construction. The Space Center which is an advance post base of space development of Korea is located on Oenaro island in Kohung, South Cholla Province. A Ground Complex of the Space Center consists of an AC(Assembly Complex), a LC(Launch Complex), and a MCC(Mission Control Center). Assembly and test facilities are located in the AC in which stage assembly, integrated assembly, check-up, certification test, and pre-launch test are made effectively. A launch pad, fuel supply facilities, a launch control center and associated supporting facilities are located in the LC, and the MCC has control over the space center. These ground complex facilities have diverse forms of an interface with mechanical device, electric device, and etc. These should also provide optimum condition and performance during launch operation processes of the launch vehicle. This paper introduces the result of R&D for the AC of the ground complex performed during system design period.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) has been developing a new launch vehicle Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II(KSLV-II) with their own technology. Thus, it is required a new launch complex that corresponds to a new propulsion system of launch vehicle. Because widely changing of KSLV-II comparing with KSLV-I such as thrust of engine system, composition of vehicle staging, pneumo-hydraulic scheme of propulsion system, it is important to establishing appropriate ground support equipments for fuel(kerosene) filling. In this critical design process, specific supply line and specification of components are designed and the concept of kerosene filling is determined based on results of preliminary design. Also, plans of supply operation and prerequisite are established and operation algorithms are formed.

  • The KSLV-II launch complex system consists of mechanical ground support equipment(MGSE), fuel ground support equipment(FGSE), electrical ground support equipment(EGSE) and infrastructures. Compressed gas supply system, as a part of FGSE, is responsible for launch operations such as gas intake, storage, supply to launch vehicle and ground support equipments. This system consists of three primary elements such as gas storage part, control panel and controller. Automatic panels, as a part of control panel, are manufactured to operate remotely by controller. This study presents compressed gas supply system which is designed for KSLV-II and ground support equipment characteristics.

  • To lunch the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II(KSLV-II), a second launch complex will be built at the Naro Space Center, and a Kerosene Filling System (KFS) will be installed. KFS of KSLV-II launch complex system is being designed based on Naro Launch Complex. But this must supply fuel to fuel tanks of the vehicle with only a supply pump because KSLV-II is a 3-stage launch vehicle unlike Naro Launch Vehicle or Test Launch Vehicle (TLV). A sudden rise of pump output pressure is recognized during fuel filling scenario selection process. This occurs because return flow can not actively deal with much flow change using the orifice-type flow-control method. To solve this problem, it is verified that fuel can be stably supplied by installing an accumulator, designed for appropriate adjustment of filling-mode change sequence via flow analysis of various cases.

  • Control systems of compressed gas supply facility are responsible for storing and supplying compressed gases required for launch complex qualification test and launch operation. Most of the facilities that make up the launch complex require compressed gas for their operation. Therefore, such control systems should be developed and verified earlier rather than the other systems that constitute the launch complex. Each verification for hardware and software is performed separately. In particular, software verification of control algorithms loaded on the controller takes a lot of time and man power during the development period of the control system. Thus, specific test procedures and methods should be prepared in advance for efficient development. This paper introduces the configuration of a compressed gas supply facility and its control system with the verification procedure and results of major algorithms.

  • In this paper, the liquid oxygen filling system (LOXFS) of the launch complex system of Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II (KSLV-II) is introduced based on critical design result by KARI in 2015 to 2016. The function and specification of the main systems of the liquid oxygen filling system, such as the storage tank, the drainage tank, the supply pumping system, the curved heat exchanger with liquid nitrogen, end valve block system, and umbilical connection, are presented.

  • The launch complex(LC) is composed of various facilities. The launch control system that operates remotely those of LC spends much time and labor for developing and verifying its control algorithms. The verification of algorithms is performed by the software developer entering simulated state values based on the test procedure and checking the output result according to the algorithm flow. These verification processes should be performed repeatedly, thus the human errors are easily occurred. In this paper, an efficient automated verification method with a script test procedure is proposed to minimize human errors and shorten the verification duration. We also present the results of the algorithm verification tests for the cases of the compressed gases supply system and the electro pneumatic panel system of LC.

  • Korea Space Launch Vehicle (KSLV)-I flight test data and the modified 1-dimensional steady state modeling data from the critical design results of the KSLV-II liquid oxygen filling system operation are compared to validate the reliability of critical design modeling. A comparison of major flow rates and pressure values between test data and calculation results are conducted. The relative errors relative to maximum total flow rate for each cooling, filling, and replenishment mode are determined within 6.7%. Calculated pressure values at the outlet of the pump and the inlet of flow control valves are within 5.1%. The pressure at the inlet of the launch vehicle for each operation mode are within the measured pressure range.

  • Hot and high speed plume exhausted during KSLV-I flight test is cooled down by an amount of water ejected from 'gas deflector cooling system' of launch complex to reduce the effects on the launch vehicle and launch complex. In this study, simplified axisymmetric computational calculation with 2-phase is carried out to analysis the water injection effects on flow field.
