  • This study has researched the following conclusion to compare to the existing theory and to examine lateral earth pressure, which have measured to add incremental load on sandy soil, and were different in types of compaction by modeling earth pressure test. Lateral earth pressure by incremental load shows that it is increasing at depth forty four centimeters as 2/3H point for wall high, and under 2/3 H point the variation of earth pressure on incremental load is not conspicuous. Therefor, the more a position of surcharge load is close with fixed wall, the more a variation of lateral earth pressure marks considerably. According to relative compaction density of soil, lateral earth pressure turns up larger effective value for layer compaction test to a thickness of thirty three centimeters than layer compaction test to a thickness of twenty centimeters by the roller.

  • Recently developed trenchless construction methods ensure stability for the ground settlement by inserting steel pipes along the underpass section and integrating steel pipes before ground excavation to form pipe-roof. This study is to confirm the reinforcing effect of pipe-roof by measuring lateral earth pressure acting on the underpass constructed by the STS (Steel Tube Slab) construction method. For this purpose, lateral earth pressure was measured at the left and right side of the pipe-roof after installing earth pressure cells. As a result, lateral earth pressure was measured with considerable reduction because the integrated pipe-roof shared surcharge. Therefore, economic design for the underpass could be expected by sharing design load by pipe-roof. In addition, construction cost was analyzed according to the design-load sharing ratio by pipe-roof. As pipe-roof shares design load by 40%, the total construction cost can decrease by almost 10% in the case of four-lane underpass.

  • The ship plating is generally subjected to combined in-plane load and lateral pressure loads. In-plane loads include axial load and edge shear, which are mainly induced by overall hull girder bending and torsion of the vessel. Lateral pressure is due to water pressure and cargo. These load components are not always applied simultaneously, but more than one can normally exist and interact. Hence, for more rational and safe design of ship structures, it is of crucial importance to bitter understand the interaction relationship of the buckling and ultimate strength for ship plating under combined loads. Actual ship plates are subjected to relatively small water pressure except for the impact load due to slamming and panting etc. The present paper describes an accurate and fast procedure for analyzing the elastic-plastic large deflection behavior up to the ultimate limit state of ship plates under combined loads. In this paper, the ultimate strength characteristics of plates under axial compressive loads and lateral pressure loads are investigated through ANSYS elastic-plastic large deflection finite element analysis with varying lateral pressure load level.

  • For exisiting $K_0$-oedometer, the lateral wall of the ring is cut thinly to make space and by filling the space with space with water or mercuty to keep the balance to the lateral pressure of a specimen, the pressure of the fluid is checked for the pressure of the specimen. But the devices to keep the balance to the lateral pressure of a specimen are complicated, difficult to manufacture and expensive. As newly developed $K_0$-oedometer is equipped with the load cell which can resist higher pressute than the lateral pressure of the specimen, there is nearly no deformation due to the lateral pressure of the specimen. And the measuting is cheap and easy as there are fewer accessories.

  • A series of model test as well as numerical analysis by FEM was performed to investigate lateral earth pressure acting on a buried pipe in soft ground undergoing horizontal soil movement. A model test apparatus was manufactured so as to simulate horizontal soil movement in model soft ground, in which a model rigid buried pipe was installed. The velocity of soil deformation could be controlled as wanted during testing. The model test was performed on buried pipes with various diameters and shapes to investigate major factors affected the lateral earth pressure. The result of model tests showed that the larger lateral earth pressure acted on the buried pipes under the faster velocity of soil movement. The result of numerical analysis, which was performed under immediate loading condition, showed a similar behavior with the result of model tests under 0.3mm/min to 1.0mm/min velocity of soil deformation. Most of model tests showed the soil deformation-lateral load behavior, in which the first yielding load developed at small soil deformation and elastic behavior was observed by the yielding load. Then, lateral load was kept constant by the second yielding load, in which plastic behavior was observed between the first yielding load and the second yielding one. Beyond the second yielding load, the compression behavior zone was observed. When the velocity was too fast, however, the lateral load was increased with soil deformation beyond the first yielding load without showing the second yielding load. The buried pipes with the larger diameter was subjected to the larger lateral load and the larger increasing rate of lateral load. At small soil deformation, the influence of diameter and shape of buried pipes on lateral load was small. However, when soil deformation was increased considerably, the influence became more and more.

  • Stiffened steel plates are basic structural members on the deck and bottom structure in ship, offshore. It has a number of one sided stiffeners in either one or both directions, the latter structure was called grillage structure. At the ship structural desgn stage, one of the major consideration is evaluation for ultimate strength of the hull girder. In general, it is accepted that hull girder strength can be represented by the local strength of the longitudinal stiffened panel. In case of considering hogging condition in a stormy sea, stiffened panel was acting on the bottom structure under axial compressive load induced hull girder bending moment, also simultaneously arising local bending moment induced lateral pressure load. In this paper, results of the structural analysis have been compared with another detailed FEA program and prediction from design guideline and a series analysis was conducted consideration of changing parameters for instance, analysis range, cross-section of stiffener, web height and amplitude of lateral pressure load subjected to combined load (axial compression and lateral pressure load). It has been found that finite element modeling is capable of predicting the behaviour and ultimate load capacity of a simply supported stiffened plate subjected to combined load of axial compression and lateral pressure load It is expected that these results will be used to examine the effect of interaction between lateral pressure and axial loads for the ultimate load-carrying capacity based on the Ultimate Limit State design guideline.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of traffic loads on retaining wall stability. There is insufficient research on lateral earth pressure on retaining wall due to traffic load. In addition, limited detailed designs of retaining wall for transportation including number of lanes of road, magnitudes of axle loads, and vehicle formations are available. Because the lateral earth pressure on the retaining wall due to traffic loads is a function of the lateral distance from retaining wall, the wall height, and the locations of lanes, the analysis of lateral load on retaining wall from traffic loads is performed with direct or indirect reflection of these factors. As a result of the analysis, lateral earth loads induced from traffics can be considered negligible if the lateral distance of traffic load from wall exceeds the height of retaining wall. Therefore, it is practically reasonable to consider traffic loads within a lateral distance between wall and traffic load of the height of retaining wall.

  • Scaled model tests were performed to explore the influence of eccentric load and lateral earth pressure on tunnel behavior and their results were verified through numerical analyses. As a method for reducing the eccentric load acting on tunnel, an eccentric supporting system (ESS) was proposed and its applicability was investigated. Experimental results showed that displacement decreased overall and the load inducing initial cracks increased as the eccentric supporting system was applied. The maximum eccentric vertical load which impacted the stability of tunnel was also increased. The test results on the influence of lateral earth pressure on tunnel behavior showed that the general aspect of displacement and crack growth changed significantly depending on the coefficient of lateral earth pressure. In addition, the weak zone In view of stability varied as well.

  • We analyzed the behavior of the lining segments considering the middle slab and lateral pressure coefficients when planning the construction of a duplex tunnel for the underground network. Reviewed segment lining analysis for research, the analytical model was determined for duplex tunnel. Also reviewed the vertical load, and a load of middle slab is considered the static load and the live load by vehicles. Section force by middle slabs a load applied was mainly generated in the lower tunnel had the greatest effect on the bending moment. In addition, the bending moment acting direction changes appeared with a large variable, and the section force according to the load applied to the middle slab is relatively constant and the effect on the segment lining from the smallest section force of the lateral pressure coefficient of 1.00 was found to occur appears most significantly. As a result of this research to identify the behavior of the slab and the segment lining by the effect of the lateral pressure coefficient (K) of the duplex tunnel will be able to present a method of the duplex tunnel structure is reasonable and economical design.
