  • This paper discusses the reduction and subsequent recovery and increase of shear strength of clay in the vicinity of soil-cement column. Laboratory and field tests were conducted to investigate the effects on surrounding clay during and after soil-cement column installation in soft Ariake clay. Discussions were made on the mechanism of strength changes of clay by considering the thixotropic recovery, reconsolidation effect, penetration of cement slurry and diffusion of exchangeable cations. On the basis of field and laboratory observations, 10 days after column installation, the decreased shear strength of surrounding clay during mixing was recovered and 30 days later, shear strength of surrounding clay increased 30% by average. Therefore, it is recommended that the increase of shear strength of clay can be taken into consideration in the bearing capacity and stability analysis of the composite ground.

  • The flow characteristics around a rudder in open water condition is analyzed by the computational method. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stoke's equation is utilized for the computation. The computational hydrodynamic force coefficients are verified through comparing with the experimental results. The information of these flow characteristics is necessary to predict cavitation and maneuvering performances, to estimate steering gear capacitance, and to get the bending moment which is useful for the structural analysis. The pressure distribution, the three-dimensional flow separation, and the tip vortices are investigated. The pattern of the three-dimensional flow separation is analyzed utilizing a topological rule. The tip vortices are also investigated through a visualization technique.

  • Takayasu`s arteritis is one of chronic inflammatory disease characteristically involving the aorta and its major branches. Symptoms and signs of the disease are various depending on the involved area. We experienced a surgical case of Takayasu`s arteritis mainly involving both renal arteries with renovascular hypertension in a 13 year old girl. Hypertension was not controlled by medical treatment including diuretics and captopril [160/140 mmHg]. Aortogram showed severely stenosed right renal artery, nearly obstructed left renal artery and not visulalized superior mesenteric artery. Angioplasty was performed for the right renal artery but aorta-renal bypass graft with greater saphenous vein was inevitable for the left renal artery. Blood pressure was controlled sufficiently with some adjunct of captopril postoperatively [130/90 mmHg]. While the patient was discharged with much improvement, she was lost follow up and died of not identified definitive cause 3 months later.

  • Non-singular boundary element method (BEM) codes are developed in acoustics application. The BEM code is then used to calculate unknown boundary surface normal displacements and surface pressures from known exterior near Held pressures. And then the calculated surface normal displacements and surface pressures are again applied to the BEM in forward in order to calculate reconstructed field pressures. The initial exterior near field pressures are very well agreed with the later reconstructed field pressures. Only the same number of boundary surface nodes (1178) are used far the initial exterior pressures which are initially calculated by Finite Element Method (FEM) and BEM. Pseudo-inverse technique is used for the calculation of the unknown boundary surface normal displacements. The structural object is a tuning fork with 128.4 Hz resonant. The boundary element is a quadratic hexahedral element (eight nodes per element).

  • Decompressive craniectomy is usually performed to relieve raised intracranial pressure[ICP] caused by various intracranial lesions. A 67-year-old man presented with acute subdural hematoma and traumatic intracerebral hematoma. The patient underwent a decompressive craniectomy. Four weeks later, the patient presented with acute neurological deterioration. Brain computed tomographic[CT] scans revealed the marked concavity of the brain at the site of the craniectomy and associated with midline shift which was reversed by cranioplasty. We report an unusual case of cerebral herniation from intracranial hypotension after decompressive craniectomy for a traumatic subdural hematoma. The cranioplasty may be helpful to prevent paradoxial cerebral herniation.

  • The ballistic capability of an alumina-rich oxide armor ceramic against a shaped jet was characterized as a function of penetration depth in a layered target structure. The penetration resistance of the ceramic, based upon the determination of penetration velocity, was not equally realized throughout the depth of penetration. It was abnormally low at an early stage of penetration, followed by a sudden increase to reach ~16GPa thereafter. There was no apparent change in such a profile with respect to the lateral size of the specimen. Based upon 2-D flash x-ray radiography and 3-D Hull code simulation, the feasibility of forming a pressure-induced predamnaged zone in front of the jet tip was speculated to foster an increased penetration velocity in the initial stage penetration, resulting in the diminished penetration resistance. The disappearance of such a predamaged zone with penetration was interpreted to restore the resistance of the ceramic in the later penetration stage.

  • Pimozide and haloperidol are typical antipsychotics. They share a similarity in pharmacotherapeutic and adverse effect profiles. Cardiovascular effects may be seen as alterations in heart rate, blood pressure, and cardiac conduction. Conduction disturbances may occur ranging from asymptomatic prolongation of the QT interval to fatal ventricular arrhythmia. So in the case of anti psychotics overdose, the patient must be carefully monitored by continuous electrocardiography (ECG). We experienced a 34-year-old woman of schizophrenia with recurrent ventricular tachycardia after pimozide and haloperidol overdose. Initially she was slightly drowsy, however her ECG showed normal sinus rhythm. After 6 hours on emergency department entrance, her ECG monitoring showed ventricular tachycardia and we successfully defibrillated. There were five times events of ventricular arrhythmia during the in-hospital stay. She was discharged 5 days later without any other complications.

  • Maxillary growth is hindered by the restricting pressure from the scar tissue formed after lip closure and palate closure surgeries of the cleft. Therefore, the anteroposterior skeletal relationship of both jaws exacerbates as patient grows. Conventional facemask treatment is valuable for dentoalveolar compensatory treatment and for very mild maxillary hypoplasia. To achieve further maxillary protraction, bone-anchored facemask or bone-anchored maxillary protraction can be attempted. For moderate maxillary hypoplasia, surgical orthodontic treatment after growth completion can be an efficient treatment reducing uncontrollable problems. For moderate to severe maxillary hypoplasia, distraction osteogenesis (DO) can be used alone or with later surgical orthodontic treatment. To compensate the severe relapse after DO, overcorrection and bone plate placement after DO are recommended. In case of hypernasality, maxillary anterior segmental distraction osteogenesis can be chosen to prevent exacerbation of the hypernasality.

  • As material needs have been increasing with recent economic growth, it is a current tendency that the magnitude of load applied to structure has been rising. With improved technique of product materials, steel and concrete have been stranger than ever so the danger of fatigue damage increases as permanent action of repeated loads. In case of deformed steel bars widely used in reinforced concrete structure, when they are product in factory, there will exist same parts connecting the steels. Such connections are easy to be weakened by permanent action of repeated loads. It is a real condition in Korea that there is lack of research of it. As a result of estimating fatigue characteristic of Pressure Welded joints with the steels that are oftenly used and producted in domestic it is showed that there are no remarkable difference in fatigue strength. Because there is no detail which is refered in Civil Specification, this paper will be the basic data being added in later Specification.

  • Micro cell stimulation device is interested in many researchers because it has several advantages such as saving time and reagents. We introduce new micro-bioreactor using micro bead and conduct cell stimulation experiments to verify effective time because cell have operated by cell-cycle (G1, S, G2, and M phase). Micro-bioreactor was made by soft lithography and CAPE (calf pulmonary artery endothelial cell) was cultured in PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) micro device for 12 hour and cell starvation process was performed for 24 hours. Micro glass beads were rolled only by slating device every hour during 15 hour because of minimizing other stimulation force like flow and pressure. The result represents that cells under exposed under micro bead stimulation show higher growth rate than normal condition and earlier and later stimulation time are more effective.
