  • One of the important application of a contact melting process is a latent thermal energy storage owing to its high heat flux. In some previous works, the split fins have been employed in order to enhance the melting speed. In the present work, the close contact melting was experimentally investigated using an ice as specimen for both split and non-split fins. It was shown that the contact melting by split fins increases the melting rate compared to that of non-split ones.

  • Due to the higher use of nonrenewable fossil fuel energy, environment friendly sustainable energy from waste materials is attracting attention of the researchers. Considering that, jute stick (JS) biochar has been considered for this study for ecofriendly and sustainable thermal energy storage application. Waste jute sticks (JS), which are being mainly used as a fuel for cooking purpose, have been pyrolyzed to produce porous biochar and have been used for shape stabilization of stearic acid (SA) as phase change material (PCM). SA at 1:1 ratio has been incorporated into the activated JS biochar to concoct shape-stabilized phase change composite (SAJS). The SAJS has been evaluated by different techniques such as Fourier transform-infrared spectroscope (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The obtained composite PCM has shown excellent shape stability with a high latent heat storage, suggesting its suitability for thermal energy storage applications.

  • Mixtures type PCM, $H_2O$-NaOH that has relatively large capacity of the latent heat and long duration of phase change temperature was developed and experimentally analyzed for the low temperature storage of the food and medical products. The results could be summarized as follows; 1. Borax as nucleating agent and acrylic polymer as thickening agent were added to $H_2O$ to prevent the supercooling and phase separation. 2. Phase change (solid$\leftrightarrows$liquid) duration of $H_2O$ added with NaOH was prolonged longer 50% than that of pure $H_2O$. 3. Phase change temperature of the latent heat material, $H_2O$-NaOH was $1.5\sim2^{\circ}C$ the maximum latent Heat was 279 kJ/kg at the NaOH addition of 1.3 wt.%. 4. The specific heat of $H_2O$-NaOH at the solid and liquid state was increased in proportion to the wt.% of NaOH, when NaOH of $1.15\sim1.60$ wt.% was added to $H_2O$, the specific heat of the solid state was increased from 3.19 kJ/kg to 5.84 kJ/kg and that of liquid state from 7.8 kJ/kg to 10.28 kJ/kg. 5. When NaOH of $1.15\sim1.60$ wt.% was added to $H_2O$, the total heat storage capacity composed of sensible and latent heat was $313\sim331.3$ kJ/kg and the maximum heat storage capacity was occurred at NaOH addition of 1.30 wt. %.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the optimal conditions of PCM slurry manufacturing equipment for saving the marketing cost and keeping the original quality of products. In addition, the characteristics of the movable container for shipping or distributing products is analysed. The major results are as follows. 1. PCM thermal storage system is designed with the conditions of temperature($-5{\sim}10^{\circ}C$), cold chain time(30 minutes), and one time usage(50 liter). This system includes tank, freezer, circulating pump, cycle type heat exchanger, swelling tank, equipment of supplying PCM supplying unit includes cold tank, cycle type heat exchanger, suction unit and control equipments, etc. 2. After ability test of PCM thermal storage system, it shows that the required freezing time of PCM thermal storage system is less than one of the previous system. The reason is that churn (top and bottom) and compulsion circulation are occurred simultaneously and unit cooler type method is better than chiller type method. 3. By the experiment of transportation latent heat container, it is decided that the best container is $K_1$ with latent heat temperature($0{\sim}5^{\circ}C$) and density(0.15%). However, for $K_l\;and\;K_2$, it is necessary more studies on latent heat thermal conditions and conditions of making method.

  • Recently, a thermal energy storage system has been developed actively fur the purpose of saving energy and reducing the peak electrical demand. Especially, ice slurry is a promising working fluid for low temperature energy storage systems. A flow of ice crystals has a large cooling capacity as a result of the involvement of latent heat. However, there are still problems related to the recrystallization of ice crystals for realizing long term storage and long distance transportation. To find improvements fur this, a method for the creation of ice crystals resistant to recrystallization has been proposed and researched by the use of an antifreeze protein (AFP) solution etc. In the present study, it has been investigated the growth of ice crystal in several kinds of water solution added non-ionic surfactant. The results shows that size of ice crystal was smaller with increasing in added surfactant. And ice crystal was not increased with added surfactant.

  • Phase change materials (PCM) are able to store a large amount of latent heat, and can be applied to thermal energy storage systems. In a PCM, it takes a long time to store heat in the storage system because of the low thermal conductivity. In this study, a finned-tube-in-tank heat exchanger was applied to a PCM thermal energy storage system to increase heat transfer efficiency. The effects of geometric and operating parameters were investigated, and the results were compared with those of the tube-in-tank heat exchanger. The finned-tube-in-tank heat exchanger showed higher heat transfer effectiveness than the tube-in-tank heat exchanger. The heat exchange effectiveness of the storage tank was determined as a function of the average NTU.

  • The formation of heat islands causes high energy demand for space cooling and peak cooling loads in conditioned buildings. High-temperature fluctuations on a building roof may cause mechanical stress and increase surface deterioration. Thermal energy storage (TES) systems using microencapsulated phase-change materials (MPCMs) have been recognized as one of the most advanced energy technologies for enhancing the energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings. In this study, we prepared MPCM/paint composites for mitigating the heat island effect and reducing peak temperature. In addition, we carried out thermal and physical analysis of prepared MPCM composite samples by means of SEM, FTIR spectroscopy, DSC, and TGA. Further, we evaluated the dynamic heat transfer performance of heat-storage tiles painted with 10 g of heat-storage paint. From the obtained results, we deduced that MPCM/hydrophilic paint composites are more applicable to various fields, including the building sector, than MPCM/hydrophobic paint composites. On the basis of SEM and FTIR spectroscopy results, we concluded that materials with hydrophilic properties are more compatible with MPCMs than those with hydrophobic properties. In addition, DSC analysis results revealed that MPCM/hydrophilic paint composites have better compatibility, higher latent heat capacity, and better thermal properties than other composites. TGA results showed that hydrophilic-paint-based composites have higher thermal durability than hydrophobic-paint-based composites. Finally, a lot of MPCM-loaded heat-storage tiles showed lower peak temperatures at all measurement positions.

  • The synthesis of stearic acid composite phase change material (PCM) was investigated and the samples produced were characterized for use in latent heat storage, using a simple chemical sol-gel process. The PCM was encapsulated to tetraethyl orthosilicate by various preparation ratios of stearic acid (5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 50%). Fourier transformation infrared spectroscope (FT-IR) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) were performed to determine the chemical structure and crystalloid phase of the microencapsulated PCM. SATEOS1 (5%) shows the best proportion for the PCM. With the presence of stearic acid as core materials and SiO2 as the supporting materials, it does not show any chemical reaction between both of them. SATEOS1 shows promising potential for thermal energy storage as it shows a better encapsulation efficiency and good thermal stability.

  • Polystyrene (PS) particles containing the phase change material (PCM) were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization. The polymer particles prepared with different parameters were investigated in terms of average particle size, particle distribution, and latent heat storage of encapsulated paraffin wax (PW) as PCM. The morphology and particle features of PS particles were analyzed by scanning electron microscope and particle size analyzer, respectively. As a result, the diameters of PS particles were adjusted with manufacturing conditions. The stable and spherical PS particles of nanosize were obtained by miniemulsion polymerization, which could be attributed to the prevention of Ostwald ripening by cosurfactant. Thermal properties of PS particle containing PCM were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. From DSC freeze-thaw cycle, PCM coated with PS exhibited the thermal energy storage and release behaviors, and the latent heat was found to be a maximum 145 J/g. It was noted that PS particles containing PCM showed a good potential as a thermal energy storage medium.
