  • Thermal storage plays an important role in building energy saving, which is greatly assisted by the incorporation of latent heat storage in building materials. A phase change material is a substance with a high heat of fusion which, melting and solidifying at a certain temperature, can be storing and releasing large amount of energy. Heat is stored or released when the material changes from solid to liquid. Integration of building materials incorporating PCMs into the building envelope can result in increased efficiency of the built environment. The aim of this research is to identify thermal performance of PCMs impregnated building materials which is applied to interior of building such as gypsum and red clay. In order to analyze thermal performance of phase change materials, test-cell experiments and simulation analysis were carried out. The results show that micro-encapsulated PCM has an effect to maintain a constant indoor temperature using latent heat through the test-cell experiments. PCM wallboard makes it possible to reduce the fluctuation of room temperature and heating and cooling load by using EnergyPlus simulation program. Phase change material can store solar energy directly in buildings. Increasing the heat capacity of a building is capable of improving human comfort by decreasing the frequency of indoor air temperature swings so that the interior air temperature is closer to the desired temperature for a long period of time.

  • Recently, the new refrigerating system, using non - fluorinated hydrocarbon refrigerants has to be developed for the agricultural fields. One of that kinds of systems is the cooling system using the water vapor and vacuum, in which the water evaporate at the low temperature under vacuum and absorb the large amount of the latent heat. If vapor with large amount of latent heat is removed from the system, the system is cooled accordingly. The characteristics of cooling under the vacuum was observed and measured using experimental apparatus, which is consisted of vacuum chamber, the ejectors, the pumps and the measurement apparatus. As the results of experiments, we know that the evaporation in the vacuum occurs vigorously when the materials to be cooled has more amounts of heat before cooling, and by which effects the materials can be cooled. The cooling vacuum system is more efficient than other methods when the agricultural products is chilled or dried.

  • It is necessary to estimate the cooling load of the next day for effective control of ice thermal storage system. In this paper, new methodology is proposed to estimate the cooling load using design parameters of building and predicted weather data. Only six input parameters such as sensible heat coefficient and constant, latent heat coefficient and constant, maximum and minimum temperature are necessary to obtain hourly distribution of cooling load for the next day. Two benchmarking buildings(hospital and research institute) are selected to validate the performance of the proposed method, and the estimated cooling loads in hourly and daily bases are calculated and compared with the measured data for E hospital. The estimated results show fairly good agreement with the measured data for both buildings.

  • Because of lack of accurate understanding of the mechanism of urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon and lack of scientific discussion, it is hard to come up with effective measures to mitigate UHI phenomenon. This study systematically described the UHI and suggested the solutions using green-infrastructure (green-infra). The factors that control UHI are very diverse: radiant heat flux, latent heat flux, storage heat flux, and artificial heat flux, and the air temperature is formed by the combination effect of radiation, conduction and convection. Green-infra strategies can improve thermal environment by reducing radiant heat flux (the albedo effect, the shade effect), increasing latent heat flux (the evapotranspiration effect), and creating a wind path (cooling air flow). As a result of measurement, green-infra could reduce radiant heat flux as $270W/m^2$ due to shadow effect and produce $170W/m^2$ latent heat flux due to evaporation. Finally, green-infra can be applied differently on the macro(urban) scale and micro scale, therefore, we should plan and design green-infra after the target objects of structures are set.

  • Phase change materials (PCM) are able to store a large amount of latent heat, and can be applied to thermal energy storage systems. In a PCM, it takes a long time to store heat in the storage system because of the low thermal conductivity. In this study, a finned-tube-in-tank heat exchanger was applied to a PCM thermal energy storage system to increase heat transfer efficiency. The effects of geometric and operating parameters were investigated, and the results were compared with those of the tube-in-tank heat exchanger. The finned-tube-in-tank heat exchanger showed higher heat transfer effectiveness than the tube-in-tank heat exchanger. The heat exchange effectiveness of the storage tank was determined as a function of the average NTU.

  • T-history method, measuring heat-of-fusion of phase change material (PCM) in sealed tubes, has the advantages of a simple experimental device and no requirements in sampling process. However, a degree of supercooling used in selecting the range of latent heat release and neglecting sensible heat during the phase change process can cause significant errors in determining the heat of fusion in the original method, which has been improved in order to predict better results by us. In the present study, the modified method was applied to a variety of PCM such as paraffin and lauric acid having very small or no supercooling with a satisfactory precision. Also the selection of inflection point and temperature measurement position was fumed out not to affect the accuracy of heat-of-fusion significantly. As a result, the method can provide an appropriate means to assess a new developed PCM by cycle test even if a very accurate value cannot be obtained.

  • This paper presents the experimental study of cabin thermal comfort using a cold storage heat exchanger in a vehicle air-conditioning system. Recent vehicle-applied ISG functions for fuel economy and emission, but when vehicles stop, compressors in the air-conditioning system stop, and the cabin temperature sharply increases, making passengers feel thermal discomfort. This study conducts thermal comfort evaluation in the vehicle, which is applied to a cold storage system for the climate control wind tunnel test and the vehicle fleet road test with various airflow volume rates and ambient temperatures blowing to the cold storage heat exchanger. The experimental results, in the cold storage system, air discharge temperature is $3.1-4.2^{\circ}C$ lower than current air-conditioning system when the compressor stops and provides cold air for at least 38 extra seconds. In addition, the blowing airflow volume to the cold storage heat exchanger with various ambient temperature was examined for the control logic of the cold storage system, and in the results, the airflow volume rate is dominant over the outside temperature. For this study, a cold storage system is economically useful to keep the cabin at a thermally comfortable level during the short period when the engine stops in ISG vehicles.

  • This study presents experimental and numerical results of the temperature characteristics, the heat transfer phenomema, and the heat storage quantity during the heat storage process with sodium phyrophosphate decahydrate($Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$)-Phase Change Material(PCM) in a latent heat storage tank(cubic type). It was proved that heat transfer by conduction was dominant because PCM($Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$) during heating processes was gel phase, not liquid phase The gap ratio(rate of air content) of PCM became smaller, the thermal capacity of PCM became larger, therefore the temperature distribution of PCM slowly increased than that of large gap ratio. There was maximum 15% difference between measured temperatures and calculated temperatures.

  • Though conventional calorimetry methods such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) are used generally in measuring heat of fusion, T-history method has the advantages of a simple experimental apparatus and no requirements of sampling process, which is particularly useful for measuring thermal properties of inhomogeneous phase change materials (PCMs) in sealed tubes. However, random criteria (a degree of supercooling) used in selecting the range of latent heat release and neglecting sensible heat during the phase change process can cause significant errors in determining the heat of fusion. In the present study, it was shown that a 40% discrepancy exists between the original T-history and the present methods when analyzing the same experimental data. As a result, a reasonable modification to the original T-history method is proposed.
