  • To predict the temperature distribution around a underground rock storage cavern, two- and three- dimensional numerical analysis using FLAC was conducted. The effects of groundwater and latent heat on thermal properties were considered in numerical calculation. The temperature estimated by FLAC are compared with the temperature measured for 5-year operation at Gonjiam storage cavern. Estimated and measured temperatures showed great discrepancy when thermal properties from laboratory tests were used and showed good agreement when the effects from 20% of volumetric water fraction and latent heat were considered. However, the discrepancy still increased with operation time due to the heat flow from ground surface. Three-dimensional numerical models were established to closely approximate the boundary condition of the test site, and numerical results better agreement when groundwater and latent heat effects were considered.

  • The summer climate is very hot and humid in Korea. The humidity is an important factor in determining thermal comfort. Recently, the research for dehumidification device development has been attempted to save energy that is required for the operation of the current dehumidifiers on the market. Existing dehumidification systems have disadvantages such as wasting energy to drive a compressor. Meanwhile, dehumidification systems with membranes can dehumidify humid air without increasing the dry bulb temperature so it doesn't have to consume cooling energy. In this paper, the cooling energy savings was studied when a dehumidification system was applied in a model building instead of a chiller. The sensible heat load was almost the same result, but the latent heat load was decreased by 38.9% and the total heat load was decreased by 8.5%. As a result, electric energy used to drive the compressor in a chiller was saved by applying a membrane air-conditioning system instead.

  • We present a retrieval scheme for the remote sensing of evapotranspiration (ET) over rice paddy. To perform the retrieval, high-resolution airborne imagery of multi-spectral visible and thermal infrared data, and ground-based meteorological measurements are utilized. Our ET retrieval scheme is based on the basic principal of surface energy budget, which is a result of balance in longwave and shortwave radiation, latent heat, sensible heat, and energy flux into the ground. To partition the latent and sensible heat fluxes of interest from the energy balance equation, three basic parameters are of most concern, including albedo, surface temperature, and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The NDVI and albedo can be easily derived from the visible and near infrared spectral data, while the surface tem-perature can be determined through the analysis of the infrared data with the Stefan Boltzmann law. From the airborne imagery taken on 28 April 2003, we observe very good dry and wet pixels that can be easily corre-sponded to the radiation and evaporation controlled crite-ria, respectively, and, hence, for the further use in defin-ing the evaporative fraction needed to partition sensible and latent heat fluxes from the net energy flux. The de-rived ET is compared with the in situ measurements.

  • Korean traditional Ondol with the sensible heat storage medium has been for a long time used as residential heating system, in these days the concrete Ondol without the heat storage medium was realized as the heating system in the private houses and the apartments. This floor heating system is good for our health. But the concrete Ondol is not desirable for the energy saving and for the maintenance of comfortable room temperature because the heat storage medium is not employed in the concrete Ondol. And as the hot water circulating pipes are buried under the concrete floor, the concrete Ondol system has some kind of problems to be improved. Therefore the new type of Ondol system was developed in this study. And the new Ondol was consisted of latent heat storage material as heat storage medium with a great heat capacity and bioceramics as medium to maintain comfortable room temperature. In this study, the heat transfer characteristics of latent heat storage-bioceramic Ondol was analyzed theoretically.

  • Two types of solar energy-latent heat storage system have been developed to minimize the fossil fuel consumption and maximize the solar energy utilization in greenhouse heating during the winter season. The one was installed on the greenhouse floor, and the other in the underground of the greenhouse . Sodium suphate decahydrate was selected as a highly concentrative solar energy storage medium and its unstable thermophysicla properties were adjusted by some additives. Thermal efficiency of them was analyzed by numerical and experimental method.

  • The analysis of temperature distribution and change of metallic structures during water quench were presented by finite element method. In temperature calculation the equation of unsteady state hear conduction problem considering latent heat due to phase transformation was applied to finite solid cylinder, SM 45C of 40mm diameter and 40mm height. In metallic structure analysis iso-thermal transformation curve and the equations of evolution in pearlite-martensite transformation were applied. The calculated results upon temperature and metallic structures were agreed with those of experimental observations.

  • Our goal is to obtain a better scientific understanding how to define the nature and role of remotely sensed land surface parameters and energy fluxes in the heat island phenomena, and local and regional weather and climate. By using the MODIS visible and thermal imagery data and analyzing the surface energy flux images associated with the change of the landcover and landuse in study area, we will estimate and present how significant is the magnitude of the heat island heat effect and its relation with the surface parameters and the energy fluxes in Taiwan. To achieve our objective, we used the energy budget components such as net radiation, soil heat flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux in the study area of interest derived form remotely sensed data to understand the island heat effect. The result shows that the water is the most important component to decrease the temperature, and the more the consumed net radiation to latent heat, the lower urban surface temperature.

  • There are three main methods to store heat energy; sensible heat storage, latent heat storage, and thermochemical heat storage. Thermochemical heat storage has the highest storage density among the three methods, so this study focused on the thermochemical heat storage method. Experiments were conducted in this study with Zeolite 13x as thermochemical material in a large-scale reactor with 8 kg of Zeolite 13x. Experiments analyzed storage density of Zeolite 13x with respect to four different heating temperatures ($50^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$, $150^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$) in heat storage process. As a result, they showed 40~50 percent of storage efficiency in the experiment. Experiments also revealed that reactions between Zeolite 13x and water vapor were reversible and stable, but efficiency of the system was low, compared with sensible heat storage systems or latent heat storage systems.

  • The objective of the present study is to predict the characteristics of heat and mass transfer around an evaporative condenser. Numerical calculations have been performed using multi-zone method to investigate heat transfer rate and evaporation rate with the variation of inlet condition(velocity, relative humidity and temperature) of the moist air, the flow rate of the cooling water and the shape of the condenser tube. From the results it is found that the profile of heat flux is the same as that of evaporation rate since heat transfer along the gas-liquid interface is dominated by the transport of latent heat in association with the vaporization(evaporation) of the liquid film. The evaporation rate and heat transfer rate is increased as mass flow rate increases or relative humidity and temperature decrease respectively. But the flow rate of the cooling water hardly affect the evaporation rate and heat flux along the gas-liquid interface. The elliptic tube which the ratio of semi-minor axis to semi-major axis is 0.8 is more effective than the circular tube because the pressure drop is decreased. But the evaporation rate and heat flux shown independency on the tube shape.
