This paper considers the problem of minimizing network-wide broadcast latency in multi-rate wireless mesh networks where a node can dynamically adjust its link layer transmission rates to its neighbors. We propose a broadcast algorithm that complements existing broadcast construct algorithm which chooses a multicast node randomly when each candidate node has same metric. We consider the currently accumulated broadcast latency from source node to the each candidate node so far to choose the next broadcast node. The proposed broadcast algorithm for minimizing latency in a multi-rate mesh networks which exploit wireless advantage and the multi-rate nature of the network. Simulation based on current 802.11 parameters shows that proposed MinLink_WCDS algorithm improves overall latency than the previous existing broadcast algorithm.
For popularization of virtual reality hardwares, VR sickness come from latency is huge problem. To reduce latency, most of the HMDs use cable for video transmission. However, cable causes spatial limitation that disturb user experience. For maximize user's immersion, wireless video transmission system is necessary. Unfortunately, wireless video transmission's latency is much longer than cable's latency. Prediction algorithms may reduce latency but cause jittering effect as a side effect. This paper experiment how jittering effect affects VR sickness. The result of experiment shows jittering effect make vr sickness worse. Future research about prediction algorithm should consider both prediction error and jittering effect.

As the need for security of SCADA systems is increasing, significant progress has been made in research on security of control protocol. However, very few security solutions were adapted to legacy SCADA system. The reasons for non-adoption are latency, cost and key management problem. We propose a low latency, economic security Solution to solve these issues. The proposed solution performs security function in data link layer and has minimum overhead to minimize latency. Furthermore, we try to solve the key management problem by providing systematic security keys and key distribution method.
In a distributed system environment, such as a cloud database, the tail latency needs to be kept short to ensure uniform quality of service. In this paper, through experiments on a Cassandra database, we show that long tail latency is caused by a lack of memory space because the database cannot receive any request until free space is reclaimed by writing the buffered data to the storage device. We observed that, since the performance of the storage device determines the amount of time required for writing the buffered data, the performance degradation of Solid State Drive (SSD) due to garbage collection results in a longer tail latency. We propose a garbage collection synchronization technique, called SyncGC, that simultaneously performs garbage collection in the java virtual machine and in the garbage collection in SSD concurrently, thus hiding garbage collection overheads in the SSD. Our evaluations on real SSDs show that SyncGC reduces the tail latency of $99.9^{th}$ and, $99.9^{th}-percentile$ by 31% and 36%, respectively.
Electrical stimulation through retinal prosthesis elicits both short and long-latency retinal ganglion cell (RGC) spikes. Because the short-latency RGC spike is usually obscured by electrical stimulus artifact, it is very important to isolate spike from stimulus artifact. Previously, we showed that topographic prominence (TP) discriminator based algorithm is valid and useful for artifact subtraction. In this study, we compared the performance of forward backward (FB) filter only vs. TP-adopted FB filter for artifact subtraction. From the extracted retinae of rd1 mice, we recorded RGC spikes with $8{\times}8$ multielectrode array (MEA). The recorded signals were classified into four groups by distances between the stimulation and recording electrodes on MEA (200-400, 400-600, 600-800, $800-1000{\mu}m$). Fifty cathodic phase-$1^{st}$ biphasic current pulses (duration $500{\mu}s$, intensity 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, $60{\mu}A$) were applied at every 1 sec. We compared false positive error and false negative error in FB filter and TP-adopted FB filter. By implementing TP-adopted FB filter, short-latency spike can be detected better regarding sensitivity and specificity for detecting spikes regardless of the strength of stimulus and the distance between stimulus and recording electrodes.
Recently, wireless sensor networks are deployed in various applications range from simple environment monitoring systems to complex systems, which generate large amount of information, like motion monitoring, military, and telematics systems. Although wireless sensor network nodes are operated with low-power 8bit processor to execute simple tasks like environment monitoring, the nodes in these complex systems have to execute more difficult tasks. Generally, MAC protocols for wireless sensor networks attempt to reduce the energy consumption using duty cycling mechanism which means the nodes periodically sleep and wake. However, in the duty cycling mechanism. a node should wait until the target node wakes and the sleep latency increases as the number of hops increases. This sleep latency can be serious problem in complex and sensitive systems which require high speed data transfer like military, wing of airplane, and telematics. In this paper, we propose a solution for reducing transmission latency through distributed duty cycling (DDC) in wireless sensor networks. The proposed algorithm is evaluated with real-deployment experiments using CC2420DBK and the experiment results show that the DDC algorithm reduces the transmission latency significantly and reduces also the energy consumption.
Objectives : Gyejigamchoyonggolmoryeo-tang (GT, Guizhigancaolonggumulitang in Chinese) is a herbal medicine to be prescribed for insomnia caused by anxiety induced by Heart-Heat and elevated Liver-Yang. In the present study, the onset time (sleep latency) and the duration time of sleep were measured to find out the sleep inducing effects of GT. The expression of c-fos immunohistochemistry was also measured at the ventrolateral preoptic area (VLPO) and tuberomammillary nucleus (TMN) site in brain. Methods : The onset time (sleep latency) and the duration time of sleep were measured 30 minutes after thiopental sodium injection. Thereafter, brain tissue was obtained and c-fos immunohistochemistry was performed on the VLPO and TMN sites. Results : GT statistically significantly reduced the sleep latency required to enter sleep, and significantly increased sleep duration time. GT significantly increased the number of c-fos immunohistochemical staining-positive cells in the sleep-inducing center (VLPO), whereas GT significantly decreased the number of c-fos immunohistochemical staining-positive cells in the arousal center (TMN). Conclusions : It could be concluded that the GT shortened the sleep latency and increased the duration time for sleep induced by thiopental sodium. And it was confirmed that the mechanism was to stimulate the sleep-inducing center (VLPO) and suppress the arousal center (TMN) in the brain. The results of this study are considered to be useful as scientific evidence that can be used clinically for the treatment of insomnia caused by anxiety.
This paper aims to integrate the previous models about mean object transfer latency in one framework and analyze the result through the computational experience. The analytical object transfer latency model assumes the multiple packet losses and the Internet of Things(IoT) environment including multi-hop wireless network, where fast re-transmission is not possible due to small window. The model also considers the initial congestion window size and the multiple packet loss in one congestion window. Performance evaluation shows that the lower and upper bounds of the mean object transfer latency are almost the same when both transfer object size and packet loss rate are small. However, as packet loss rate increases, the size of the initial congestion window and the round-trip time affect the upper and lower bounds of the mean object transfer latency.

WFQ(Weighted Fair Queuing) is the most popular fair queuing algorithm to guarantee the Quality-of-Service(QoS), but it has the inherent drawback of a poor resource utilization, particularly under the low rate traffic requiring a tight delay bound. It was recently identified that the poor utilization is mainly due to non-optimized latency of a traffic flow and then LOFQ(Latency-Optimized Fair Queuing) to overcome the drawback was introduced. The LOFQ algorithm, however, renews their optimal latencies for all flows whenever a new flow arrives, which results in the high implementation complexity of O($N^2$).This paper is to reduce thecomplexity to O(1). The proposed method is first to derive the optimal latency index function from the statistical QoS characteristics of the offered load, and then to simply calculate the optimal latency index of the arriving flow using the function.

Recently with the high expectation of voice over WLAN service, to supped fast inter-AP security transition in WLAN AP is one of the most actively investigating issues. It is also very important to minimize inter-AP security transition latency, while maintaining constantly the secure association from old AP when a station transits to new AP. Hence, this paper first defines secure transition latency as a primary performance metric of AP system in WLAN supporting IEEE802.11i, 802.1x, and 802.11f, and then presents low latency inter-AP security transition mechanism and its security FSM whose objective is to minimize inter-AP transition latency. Experiment shows that the proposed scheme outperforms the legacy 802.1X AP up to $79\%$ with regard to the transition latency.
