A calibration method for multiple sets of stereo vision cameras is proposed. To measure the three-dimensional shape of a very long object, measuring the object at different viewpoints and registration of the data are necessary. In this study, two lasers beams generate two strings of calibration targets, which form straight lines in the world coordinate system. An evaluation function is defined to calculate the sum of the squares of the distances between each transformed target and the fitted line representing the laser beam to each target, and the distances between points appearing in the data sets of two adjacent viewpoints. The calculation process for the approximation method based on data linearity is presented. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the method.
Robots are widely used in various automation processes in industrial applications. Traditionally, it operated under fixed condition by teaching operating positions. Recently, diverse 2D/3D sensors are used together with robot to give more flexibility in operation. In this paper, we deal with automatic manipulation of tie rod in automotive production line. Sensor system consisted of a camera and slit laser is used for the acquisition of 3D information and it is used attached on the robot. Nut runner is used for the manipulation of stop nut and adjust bolt on the tie rod. Detailed procedures for the automatic manipulation of tie rod are presented. In the presented approach, we effectively use 3D information in whole procedure such as computing distance to the tie rod, rotation angle of bolt and nut. Experimental results show the feasibility of the proposed algorithm.
This paper proposes a stereo vision-based forward obstacle detection and distance measurement method. In general, stereo vision-based obstacle detection methods in automotive applications can be classified into two categories: IPM (Inverse Perspective Mapping)-based and disparity histogram-based. The existing disparity histogram-based method was developed for stop-and-go applications. The proposed method extends the scope of the disparity histogram-based method to highway applications by 1) replacing the fixed rectangular ROI (Region Of Interest) with the traveling lane-based ROI, and 2) replacing the peak detection with a constant threshold with peak detection using the threshold-line and peakness evaluation. In order to increase the true positive rate while decreasing the false positive rate, multiple candidate peaks were generated and then verified by the edge feature correlation method. By testing the proposed method with images captured on the highway, it was shown that the proposed method was able to overcome problems in previous implementations while being applied successfully to highway collision warning/avoidance conditions, In addition, comparisons with laser radar showed that vision sensors with a wider FOV (Field Of View) provided faster responses to cutting-in vehicles. Finally, we integrated the proposed method into a longitudinal collision avoidance system. Experimental results showed that activated braking by risk assessment using the state of the ego-vehicle and measuring the distance to upcoming obstacles could successfully prevent collisions.
In this research, a vision system for detecting breakages of small-diameter taps, which are rarely detected by the indirect in-process monitoring methods such as acoustic emission, cutting torque and motor current, was developed. Two HMI (Human Machine Interface) programs to embed the developed vision system into a Siemens open architecture controller, 840D, were developed. They are placed in sub-windows of the main window of the 840D and can be activated or deactivated either by a softkey on the operating panel or the M code in the NC part program. In the event that any type of tool breakage is detected, the HMI program issues a command for an automatic tool change or sends an alarm signal to the NC kernel. An evaluation test in a high-speed tapping machine showed that the developed vision system was successful in detecting breakages of small-diameter taps up to M1.

One of the oldest, most common engineering problems is measuring the dimensions of different objects and the distances between locations. In AEC/FM, related uses vary from large-scale applications such as measuring distances between cities to small-scale applications such as measuring the depth of a crack or the width of a welded joint. Within the last few years, advances in applying new technologies have prompted the development of new measuring devices such as ultrasound and laser-based measurers. Because of wide varieties in type, associated costs, and levels of accuracy, the selection of an optimal measuring technology is challenging for construction engineers and facility managers. To tackle this issue, we present an overview of various measuring technologies adopted by experts in the area of AEC/FM. As the next step, to evaluate the performance of these technologies, we select one indoor and one outdoor case and measure several dimensions using six categories of technologies: tapes, total stations, laser measurers, ultrasound devices, laser scanners, and image-based technologies. Then we evaluate the results according to various metrics such as accuracy, ease of use, operation time, associated costs, compare these results, and recommend optimal technologies for specific applications. The results also revealed that in most applications, computer vision-based technologies outperform traditional devices in terms of ease of use, associated costs, and accuracy.
This paper describes the mechanism, guidance, sensor system, and navigation algorithm of METRO, a free ranging mobile robot. METRO is designed for use in structured surroundings or factory environments rather than unstructured natural environments. An overview of the physical configuration of the mobile robot is presented as well as a description of its sensor system, an omnidirectional laser range finder. Except for the global path planning algorithm, a guidance and a navigation algorithm with a local path planning algorithm are used to navigate the mobile robot. In METRO the computer support is divided into a supervisor with image processing and local path planning and a slave with motor control. The free ranging mobile robot is self-controlled and all processing being performed on board.

Depth data for is very important data for 3D display. Disparity and depth data makes users to feel 3D effect. We used stereo camera to measure depth and made fast algorithm to get in real time. This vision system can be substituted for expensive laser system.
In this paper, we present visual sensing techniques that can be used to teach a robot using a laser pointer. The light spot of an off-the-shelf laser pointer is detected and its movement is tracked on consecutive images of a camera. The three-dimensional position of the spot is calculated using stereo cameras. The light spot on the image is detected based on its color, brightness, and shape. The detection results in a binary image, and morphological processing steps are performed on the image to refine the detection. The movement of the laser spot is measured using two methods. The first is a simple method of specifying the region of interest (ROI) centered at the current location of the light spot and finding the spot within the ROI on the next image. It is assumed that the movement of the spot is not large on two consecutive images. The second method is using a Kalman filter, which has been widely employed in trajectory estimation problems. In our simulation study of various cases, Kalman filtering shows better results mostly. However, there is a problem of fitting the system model of the filter to the pattern of the spot movement.
This paper introduces a vision-based automatic system (VAMS) for non-contact measurement of morphometric characteristics of flatfish, such as total length (TL), body width (BW), height (H), and weight (W). The H and W are simply measured by a laser displacement and a load cell, respectively. The TL and BW are measured by a proposed morphological image processing algorithm. The proposed algorithm cans measurement, when the tail of flatfish is deformed, and when it is randomly oriented. In the experiment, the average and maximum measurement errors were recorded, and standard deviations and coefficients of variation (CVs) for the measurements were calculated. From those results, when flatfish the TL measurements had an average of 266.844 mm, a standard deviation of 0.351 mm, a CV of 0.131%, and a maximum error of 0.87 mm with straightened flatfish ($TL_A$ : 267 mm, $BW_A$ : 141 mm), and when flatfish of different sizes were measured, the errors in the TL and BW measurements were both about 0.2 %. Using a single conveyor, the VAMS can process up to 900 fishes per hour. Moreover, it can measure morphometric characteristics of flatfish with a TL of up to 500 mm.

A large-scaled research project titled "Intelligent Excavating System (IES)" sponsored by Korean government has launched in 2006. An issue of real-time 3D terrain modeling has become a crucial point for successful implementation of IES due to many application limitations of state-of-the-art techniques developed in various high-technology fields. Many feasible technologies such as laser scanning, structured lighting and so on were widely reviewed by professionals and researchers for one year. Various efforts such as literature reviews, interviews, and indoor experiments make us select a structural light technique and stereo vision technique as appropriate techniques for accomplishment of real-time 3D terrain modeling. It, however, revealed that off-the-shelf products of structural light and stereo-vision technique had many technical problems which should be resolved for practical applications in IES. This study introduces diverse methods modifying off-the-shelf package of the structural light method, one of feasible techniques and eventually allowing this technique to be successfully utilized for achieving fundamental research goals. This study also presents many efforts to resolve practical difficulties of this technique considering basic characteristics of excavating operations and particular environment of construction sites. Findings showed in this study would be beneficial for other researchers to conduct new researches for application of vision techniques to construction fields by provision of detail issues about practical application and diverse practical methods as solutions overcoming these issues.
