  • The objective of this research work is to investigate the effects of process parameters, such as power of laser, travel speed of laser and material thickness, on kerfwidth and characteristics of the cut surface for the case of cutting of CSP 1N sheet using high power continuous wave Nd:YAG laser. In order to find relationship between the process parameters on the quality of the cut section, such as kerfwidth, surface roughness and the striation formation, several laser cutting experiments are carried out. From the results of experiments, an optimal cutting speed for each cutting condition has been obtained to improve the quality of the cut surface.

  • The objective of this research work is to investigate the influence of process parameters, such as power of laser, travel speed of laser and material thickness, on roughness and striation of the cut surface for the case of cutting of CSP 1N sheet using high power Nd:YAG laser with continuous wave(CW). In order to find the practical cutting region and the relationship between process parameters on the roughness and the striation, several laser cutting experiments are carried out. From the results of experiments, the allowable cutting region and an optimal cutting speed for each cutting condition have been obtained to improve the quality of the cut surface. In addition, it has been shown that the surface roughness is related to the number of striation and depth of valley of the cut surface.

  • Silicon nitride is widely used as an engineering ceramics because it has high strength, abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance even at high temperature. However, machining of silicon nitride is difficult due to its high hardness and brittleness. Laser assisted machining(LAM) allows effective cutting using CBN tool by locally heating the cutting part to the softening temperature of YSiAlON using the laser beam. The effect of preheating depending on process parameters were studied to find out the oxidation mechanism. If silicon nitride is sufficiently preheated, the surface is oxidized and $N_2$ gas is formed and escapes from the material, thereby making the cutting process more advantageous. During laser preheating process before machining, high temperature results in strong oxidation which makes the bloating, silicate layers and micro cracks. Using the results of these experiments, preheating characteristics and oxidation behavior were found out.

  • The analysis of the depth measurement system with multi-sensors (laser, camera, mirror) has been done and the parameter calibration technique has been proposed. In the proposed depth measurement system, the laser beam is reflected to the object by the rotating mirror and again the position of the laser beam is observed through the same mirror by the camera. The depth of the object pointed by the laser beam is computed depending on the pixel position on the CCD. There involved several number of internal and external parameters such as inter-pixel distance, focal length, position and orientation of the system components in the depth measurement error. In this paper, it is shown through the error sensitivity analysis of the parameters that the most important parameters in the sense of error sources are the angle of the laser beam and the inter pixel distance.

  • The authors derived the criteria on the process parameters of laser depositions with metal powers(SUS316L & IN718) by evaluating the surface and cross-section properties of the deposition layers. The surface characteristics of the deposition layer are investigated through optical microscopy by controlling the process parameters of laser output, powder feeding rate and gas feeding rate. The cross-section characteristics were also analyzed after polishing and chemical etching process. As the gas feeding rate increased, the amount of powder loss increased and the difference in the dilution ratio and heat affected zone depending on laser outputs was observed. In addition, the powder feeding rate used in the experiment did not interfere with the energy absorption of the base material.

  • Investigations of process parameters are essential when fabricating high-quality parts using additive manufacturing. This study investigates the change in the mechanical characteristics of a SUS316L specimen fabricated using selective laser melting based on the energy density and bead overlap ratio. The SUS316L powder particles were spherical and 35 ㎛ in size. Single-bead and hexahedral shape deposition experiments were performed sequentially. A single bead experiment was performed to obtain the bead overlap ratios for different laser parameters utilizing laser power and scan speed as experimental parameters. A hexahedral shape deposition experiment was also performed to observe the difference in mechanical properties, such as the internal porosity, surface roughness, and hardness, based on the energy density and bead overlap ratio of the three-dimensional printed part. Laser power, scan speed, overlap ratio, and layer thickness were chosen as parameters for the hexahedral shape deposition experiment. Accordingly, the energy density applied for three-dimensional printing, and the experimental parameters were calculated, and the energy density and bead overlap ratio for fabricating parts with good properties have been suggested.

Effect of Parameters in Evaporative Removal Process by Absorption of a CW Laser (연속 레이저 흡수에 의한 증발제거 과정의 관련 인자 영향 고찰)

  • Explosive evaporative removal process of biological tissue by absorption of a CW laser has been simulated by using gelatin and a multimode Nd: YAG laser. Because the point of maximun temperature of laser-irradiated gelatin exists below the surface due to surface cooling, evaporation at the boiling temperature is made explosively from below the surface. The important parameters of this process are the conduction loss to laser power absorption (defined as the conduction-to-laser power parameter, Nk), the convection heat transfer at the surface to conduction loss (defined as Bi), dimensionless extinction coefficient (defined as BrJ, and dimensionless irradiation time (defined as Fo). Dependence of Fo on Nk and Bi has been observed by experiment, and the results have been compared with the numerical results obtained by solving a 2-dimensional conduction equation. Fo and explosion depth (from the surface to the point of maximun temperature) are increased when Nk and Bi are increased. To find out the minimum laser power for explosive evaporative removal process, steady state analysis has been also made. The limit of Nk to induce evaporative removal, which is proportional to the inverse of the laser power, has been obtained.

  • Dissimilar-metal welds(DHWs) are used widely in various industrial applications due to the pratical importance from the technical and economic aspect. However, DMWs have several fabricative and metallurgical drawbacks that can often lead to in-service failures. For example, the most pronounced fabrication faults are hot cracks. Recently, DMWs have used the various of heat source to decrease such as faults. In this paper, the weldability on dissimilar metal welds of Austenite stainless steel and Low carbon steel using a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser was experimentally investigated. Experiments were conducted to determine effects of welding parameters, on eliminating or reducing the extent welding zone formation at dissimilar metal welds and to optimize those parameters that have the most influence parameters such as focus length, power, beam speed, shielding gas, and wave length of laser.

  • The wire displacement of wire electric discharge machine has been measured using He-Ne laser. A measurement system consisted of He-Ne laser, A/D converter, 4 divided photodiode, amplifier, sensor process instrument, and personal computer. The processing parameters were varid with feed rate, wire tension, wire speed and voltage. The laser beam intensity transmitted on a 4 divided photodiode was varied by processing wire electric descharge machine with various process parameters. The 4 divided photodiode and amplifier were used to change the detected beam intensity into voltage. Variation of wire displacement was between 11 and 125 .mu. m. The wire tension was dominant on the variation of wire displacement among many parameters.

  • The purpose of the study was to identify the effect of laser parameters on photocoagulation to maximize safety and efficacy during varicose vein treatment. CW and pulsed modes at 1470 nm were initially compared as a function of power on bovine liver tissue. In the pulsed mode, various parameters including repetition rate, duty cycle, and irradiation time were compared to evaluate tissue response during thermal treatment. The results demonstrated that CW and pulsed modes yielded almost similar coagulation development possibly due to shorter irradiation time of 5 sec. Regardless of laser mode, both repetition rate and duty cycle presented constant coagulation rate whereas longer irradiation time facilitated coagulation process.
