The trend of the plasma cutting and laser cutting technology of metal alloys including high strength steel, aluminum alloys for the welding structures has been studied. The high-precision plasma systems offer a denser, higher energy arc that in effect produces a sharper cutting tool and high quality cutting products. The high-quality fiber laser systems with compact design and easy set-up make it ideal for cutting in the pipeline or steel structre manufacturing. This paper covers the scientometric analysis of the high efficient cutting technology which are based on the published research works in the 'plasma and laser', and 'cutting technology' obtained from Web of Science, and deals with the details of the background data of the plasma cutting and laser cutting technology.
The smallest green laser containing a built-in temperature controlling unit has been demonstrated. The device volume was just 0.5 cubic centimeters, which is nearly the same size as existing red and blue diode lasers, has an electrical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 10% and 150 mW power output. Furthermore as an alternative approach for compact green laser development, a quasi-phase matching method with wide spectral bandwidth for the reduction of speckle noise will be presented.
An experimental study of energy absorption and x-ray emission from ultrashort laser pulse irradiation of in-situ produced solid clusters has been performed. Silver clusters produced by a 30 mJ, 300 ps laser pulse were irradiated up to an intensity of $3{\times}10^{17}\;W/cm^2$ by a 70 mJ, 45 fs compressed laser pulse from the same Ti:sapphire laser. Absorption of the laser light exceeding 70% was observed, resulting in an x-ray yield (>1 keV) of ${\sim}60{\mu}J$ pulse. This may constitute a much simpler means of intense x-ray generation using ultrashort laser pulses as compared to the irradiation of structured / pre-deposited cluster targets, and it offers higher x-ray conversion efficiency than that from gas clusters and planar solid targets.

We analyzed the damage effect on Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastics(GFRP) under air flow by irradiation of continuous wave near-IR laser. Damage process and temporal temperature distribution were demonstrated and material characteristics were observed with laser intensity, surface flow speed and angle. Surface temperature on GFRP rapidly increased with laser intensity, and the damaged pattern was different with flow characteristics. In case of no flow, penetration on GFRP by burning and flame generation after laser irradiation was appeared at once. GFRP was penetrated by the heat generated from resin ignition. In case of laser irradiation under flow, a flame generated after burning extinguished at once by flow and penetration pattern on GFRP were differently shown with flow angle. From the results, we presented the damage process and its mechanism.
We report on the relationship between output current for quadrant photodetector (QPD) and bias voltage in silicon-based p-i-n (positive-intrinsic-negative) QPD examined using millisecond pulse laser (ms pulse laser) irradiation. The mechanism governing the relationship was further studied experimentally. The output current curves were obtained by carrying out QPD under different bias voltages (0-40 V) irradiated by ms pulse laser. Compared to other photodetectors, the relaxation was created in the output current for QPD which is never present in other photodetectors, such as PIN and avalanche photodetector (APD), and the maximum value of relaxation was from 6.8 to 38.0 ㎂, the amplitude of relaxation increases with bias value. The mechanism behind this relaxation phenomenon can be ascribed to the bias voltage induced Joule heating effect. With bias voltage increasing, the temperature in a QPD device will increase accordingly, which makes carriers in a QPD move more dramatically, and thus leads to the formation of such relaxation.
In this study, we have developed a new UV$({\lambda}=355nm)$ laser micromachining technology by direct ablation method without masks. This technology allows that 3D micro parts can be fabricated rapidly and efficiently with a low price. And it has a benefit of reducing fabricating process simply. Due to micro parts' fabrication, such technologies need the control of XYZ stages with high precision, the design of optical devices to maintain micron spot sizes of laser beam and the control technology of laser focus. The developed laser manufacturing process for laser micromachining is that, after extracting coordinates of shape data from CAD model data, a beam path considering manufacturing features of laser beam is created by using genetic algorithm. This generated manufacturing process is sent to stage controller. In order to improve the surface quality of micro parts, we have carried out experiments on iteration manufacturing and beam step-over by using a minimum focus size. Moreover, we have fabricated a micro-channel through the developed laser micromachining technology and verified it through the results.
In laser imaging, accurate extraction of the laser's center is essential. Several methods exist to extract the laser's center in an image, such as the geometric mean, the parabolic curve fitting, and the Gaussian curve fitting, etc. The Gaussian curve fitting is the most suitable because it is based on the physical properties of the laser. The width of the Gaussian laser beam depends on the distance from the laser source to the target object. It is assumed in general that the distance remains constant at a laser spot resulting in a symmetric Gaussian model for the laser image. However, on a curved surface of the object, the distance is not constant; The laser beam is narrower on the side closer to the focal point of the laser light and wider on the side closer to the laser source, which causes the distribution of the laser beam to skew. This study presents a modified Gaussian model in the laser imaging to incorporate the slant angle of a curved object. The proposed method is verified with simulation and experiments.
We report the laser scanning display as an emerging technology. We show demonstration system of laser TV, Video image is made by using a high speed MEMS scanning mirror and a direct-modulated red diode laser. We designed and fabricated MEMS scanning mirror. The first demonstration system showed a NTSC-resolution video image with the image size of 5 inches. The successful development of compact laser TV will open a new area of home application of the laser light.

A non-symmetric laser beam was used for cutting a thin glass substrate and its effect was investigated. In laser cutting of brittle materials, controlling crack initiation on the surface is crucial; however, it is difficult to ensure that crack propagation occurs according to a designed laser path. A lot of deviation in crack propagation, especially at the edge of the substrate, is usually observed. A non-symmetric laser beam generates a non-uniform energy distribution, which enhances directional crack propagation. A 20-W pulsed YAG laser was used for cutting a thin glass substrate. Parametric analysis was carried out and the crack control of the non-symmetric laser beam was improved. A theoretical model was presented and the limitations of the proposed process were also discussed.

In this paper a very brief review of historical development of optical science and technology in China is presented. More attention has been pain on Modem Optics, which developed since 1950s. The recent development of optical science and technology in following fields are introduced. 1. Optical engineering and instrumentation (tracking theodolites, high speed cameras, satellite laser ranging systems, satellite flying attitude control, cameras for remote sensing, astronomical optical instrument) 2. Applied optics (adaptive optics, optical metrology, infrared optics, optical processing, optical holography) 3. Laser science and technology (ultrashort pulse lasers, UV-X ray lasers, high power laser facilities and laser fusion, laser isotope separation) 4. Laser and nonlinear materials (rare earth elements doped laser glasses and crystals, tunable laser crystals, borate series and organic nonlinear crystals) 5. Optoelectronic science and technology (Optical communication, optical data storage, optical computing) The current situation and developing prospect of optical and optoelectronic industry in China are presented. Furthermore it points out that the optical industry could be developed vigorously only if products development capacity is enhanced and new products industrialization is heightened. The main research and education institutions in the optics field in China, as well as the Chinese Optical Society (COS) are introduced.
