  • In this study, a diamond turning machine and a laser-assisted machining module were utilized for the complex combined cutting of aspheric shapes and fine patterns on the surface of high-hardness brittle material, silicon. The analysis of material's form accuracy and corrective machining was conducted based on key factors such as laser output, rotational speed, feed rate, and cutting depth to achieve form accuracy below 1 ㎛ and surface roughness below 0.1 ㎛. The cutting condition and corrective machining methods were investigated to achieve the desired form accuracy and surface roughness. The rotational speed of the spindle and the linear feed rate of the diamond turning machine were varied in five stages for the cutting condition test. Surface roughness and form accuracy were measured using both a contact surface profilometer and a non-contact surface profilometer. The experimental results revealed a tendency of improved surface roughness with increased rotational speed of the workpiece, and the best surface roughness and form accuracy were observed at a feed rate of 5 mm/min. Furthermore, based on the cutting condition experiments, corrective machining was performed. The experimental results demonstrated an improvement in form accuracy from 0.94 ㎛ to 0.31 ㎛ and a significant reduction in the average value of the surface roughness curve from 0.234 ㎛ to 0.061 ㎛. This research serves as a foundation for future studies focusing on the machinability in relation to laser output parameters.

  • The good light permeability and hardness of glass allow it to be used in various fields. Non-conventional machining methods have been used for glass machining because of its brittle properties. As one non-contact machining method, a laser has advantages that include a high machining speed and the fact that no tool making is required. However, glass has light permeability. Thus, the use of a laser to machine glass has limitations. A nanosecond pulse laser can be used at low power for laser-induced backside wet etching, which is an indirect method. In previous studies, a short-wave laser that had good light absorption but a high price was used. In this study, a near-infrared laser was used to test the possibility of glass micro-machining. In particular, when deeper machining was conducted on a glass structure, more problems could result. To solve these problems, microstructure manufacturing was conducted using ultrasonic vibration.

  • Laser-Assisted machining (LAM) is a new method for processing hard-to-cut materials. However, curved shapes are difficult to predict the preheating effect of by LAM because heat sources are changed by moving laser module. So, it is necessary to study the preheating effect of the laser heat source irradiated on a 3-dimensionally shaped workpiece, such as a NURBS shaped workpiece. In this study, thermal analysis and preheating experiment of the LAM for the NURBS shaped workpiece are performed. Also, two machining methods are proposed to avoid interference of laser module and cutting tool. The results of the analysis can be applied to various shaped workpieces by LAM.

  • Currently, many researches are carried out for laser assisted machining, which is one of the important fields in materials difficult to process. However, a prediction of heat source is difficult because of moving heat source. In this paper, a thermal analysis of laser assisted machining of plate by change of heat source size is performed, and preheating temperature by adjusting the feed rate is controlled. It was recognized that the maximum preheating temperature increases according to the decrease in heat source size, and feed rate need to adjust as high speed. The results of this analysis can be used as a reference for preheating temperature prediction in laser assisted milling.

  • Laser-assisted machining is dependent on absorbed energy density into workpiece. Generally, the absorptivity of laser beam is dependent on wave length of laser, materials, surface roughness, etc. Various shapes and energy densities for beam irradiation can be used to laser-assisted machining. In this thesis, efficient method of heat source modeling was developed and designed by using one fundamental experimental trials. And then, laser-assisted machining of rod-shaped cast iron was simulated by using commercial FEM code MARC. Simulations and experiments with various conditions were carried out to determine suitable condition of pre-heating for laser-assisted turning process. Temperature distribution of cutting zone could be predicted by simulation.

  • In this paper, we describe experiment results using a vibration assisted hybrid femtosecond laser (${\lambda}$:795 nm) ultra-precision machining system. The hybrid system we have developed is possible that optical focal point of the femtosecond laser constantly and frequently within the range of PZT(piezoactuator) vibrator working distance. Using the hybrid system, We have experimented on brass and studied about differences of result of hole aspect ratio compare to general experiment setup of femtosecond laser system. Aspect ratio of a micro hole on brass is increased as 54% with 100 Hz vibration frequency and surface roughness of the side wall also improved compare to non-vibration.

  • When cutting 2.0cm-thick red oak and hard maple with an air-jet-assisted carbon-dioxide laser of 2kW output power, maximum feed speed at the point of full penetration of the beam decreased with increasing the angle between grain and cutting direction. Feed speed averaged 3.75 and 3.38 meters per minute for red oak and hard maple, respectively. Gray-level of laser-cut surfaces were analyzed by image analysis system. The highest gray level of laser-cut surface was obtained when red oak was cut parallel to grain by laser. Surface profiler was used to scan the sawn and laser-cut surfaces. Center line average roughnesses of laser-cut surfaces were higher than those of sawn surfaces. Scanning electron micrographs showed the cell walls which were melted by laser.

  • Machinability of LAM(Laser Assisted Machining) has been studied for ceramics such as $Al_2O_3$, $Si_3_N4$ and $ZrO_2$ by $CO_2$ laser. It was possible to remove ceramics by PCBN tool because material became softening and deterioration by local laser beam irradiation. The advantage of LAM is the ability to produce larger material removal rates and tool life. But, for cutting of $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$, stage of laser power control was needed owing to thermal shock with high temperature of workpiece by laser power. And when $Si_3N_4$ was machined by LAM, $N_2$ gas spouted from surface of one cause of high temperature. Characteristics of LAM were analyzed using pyrometer, dynamometer, SEM and EDS to measure temperature of workpiece surface, cutting force, variation of machining surface and structure of lattice respectively. As the result of this study, it was found that machinability of LAM for ceramics in $CO_2$ laser and mechanism of LAM was different according to the kind of ceramics because of properties of materials.
