High-speed angular-scan pulse-echo ultrasonic propagation imager for in situ non-destructive evaluation

  • This study examines a non-contact laser scanning-based ultrasound system, called an angular scan pulse-echo ultrasonic propagation imager (A-PE-UPI), that uses coincided laser beams for ultrasonic sensing and generation. A laser Doppler vibrometer is used for sensing, while a diode pumped solid state (DPSS) Q-switched laser is used for generation of thermoelastic waves. A high-speed raster scanning of up to 10-kHz is achieved using a galvano-motorized mirror scanner that allows for coincided sensing and for the generation beam to perform two-dimensional scanning without causing any harm to the surface under inspection. This process allows for the visualization of longitudinal wave propagation through-the-thickness. A pulse-echo ultrasonic wave propagation imaging algorithm (PE-UWPI) is used for on-the-fly damage visualization of the structure. The presented system is very effective for high-speed, localized, non-contact, and non-destructive inspection of aerospace structures. The system is tested on an aluminum honeycomb sandwich with disbonds and a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) honeycomb sandwich with a layer overlap. Inspection is performed at a 10-kHz scanning speed that takes 16 seconds to scan a $100{\times}100mm^2$ area with a scan interval of 0.25 mm. Finally, a comparison is presented between angular-scanning and a linear-scanning-based pulse-echo UPI system. The results show that the proposed system can successfully visualize defects in the inspected specimens.

레이저진동계를 사용한 동조액체댐퍼의 액체 진동 측정 (Measurement of Liquid Oscillation in Tuned Liquid Dampers using a Laser Doppler Vibrometer)

  • 본 논문에서는 기존 파고 측정 센서의 한계를 극복하기 위하여 레이저 장비 중 LDV를 이용하여 동조액체기둥감쇠기 안의 액체의 파고를 측정하는 방법을 제안하고 검증하였다. 비접촉 센서의 장점과 LDV가 속도와 변위를 측정하는 원리를 기술하였고 대상 물체가 액체인 경우에 요구되는 사항들에 대하여 실험적으로 파악하였다. 투명한 액체는 레이저 광선을 대부분 투과시켜 LDV에 되돌아오는 광량이 부족해 측정이 불가능함을 확인하였고 이를 증가시키기 위해 염료를 혼합하였다. 이때, 염료의 색에 따라 광량에 차이가 발생함을 확인하여 LDV에 사용된 레이저 광선의 파장과 연관된 결과를 도출하였다. 염료를 혼합한 후 광량이 충분한 경우에도 발생하는 데이터의 오차를 제거하기 위해 염료의 농도를 변화시키며 그에 따른 데이터의 정확도를 파악하였다. 결과적으로 모든 가시광선의 빛을 반사시키는 흰색의 염료를 충분한 농도로 혼합하였을 때 LDV를 이용한 TLCD의 파고 측정의 실험적인 결과가 용량식 파고계와 일치함을 확인하였다.

Digital PLL을 이용한 초음파진동 측정용 레이저 도플러 진동계의 개발 (The development of laser doppler vibrometer using DPLL for the detection of ultrasonic vibration)

  • 본 논문에서는 초음파영역에서 진동하는 물체의 진동주파수와 크기를 측정할 수 있는 레이저 도플러 진동계(Laser Doppler Vibrometer, 이하 LDV)를 설계, 제작하였다. LDV의 광원으로는 파장이 632.8 nm인 He-Ne 레이저를 사용하였으며 Bragg셀에 의해 주파수가 천이되도록 한 마이켈슨형 간섭게 (Michelson interferometer)로 구성하였다. PIN다이오드의 출력은 중심주파수가 40 MHz인 주파수 변조된 신호이며, 이 신호를 증폭하고 주파수를 2.5MHz로 낮춘 후 디지털로 변환하였다. Digital Phase Locked Loop(이하 DPLL)를 사용하여 진동하는 표면의 속도에 비례하는 전압출력을 얻었으며, 이 신호로부터 진동주파수와 크기를 추출하고 주파수특성을 보상하기 위하여 마이크로프로세서를 사용하였다. 그 결과 300 kHz까지의 진동을 측정할 수 있었으며 300 kHz로 진동하는 경우 측정 가능한 최소진폭은 1 nm이었다. 본 연구에서 개발된 LDV는 대용량 전기기기의 부분방전에 의해 발생되는 초음파진동으로부터 최소형 전기 기기의 미세진동까지 측정하는 비접촉식 진동 측정에 사용할 수 있다고 사료된다.

  • A Laser Doppler Vibrometer(LDV) was developed using He-Ne laser as a light source. The heterodyne method was employed and its output signal was digitally processed with a $\mu$-processor and the result was displayed with LCD. The frequency shifted object beam(40 MHz) by a Bragg cell was focused on the surface of the moving target and the Doppler shifted reflected beam was recombined with reference beam at the fast photodetector to produce frequency modulated signal centered at 40 MHz. The signal from the detector was amplified and downconverted to intermediate frequency centered at 1 MHz after mixing process. The voltage output that was proportional to the velocity of the moving surface was obtained using PLL. With the same method, the fringe pattern signal of the moving surface is obtained. This fringe pattern signal is converted to TTL signal with ZCD(zero-crossing detector) and then counted to calculate the displacement due to the vibration, which is displayed with LCD. This LDV can be used to measure the resonant frequency of the electric equipments such as circuit breakers and transformers, of which resonant frequencies are changed when they are damaged.

디지털 VCR 헤드 드럼의 밸런싱 연구 (Balancing of Digital VCR Head Drum)

  • Dynamic stability in rotation of the head drum of digital VCR is very important due to the nature of high rotation speed and small angular inertia. Therefore special considerations on reducing the unbalance and assuring the stability are required the design and manufacturing process. In this paper, newly developed digital head drum is introduced. And advanced methods in analyzing and reducing the unbalance is suggested. LDV(Laser Doppler Vibrometer) was used as a measurement system verifying our modeling and new method for balancing. Experiments show that the theoretical data estimated by modeling of shaft bending caused by unbalance mass and the measured data are almost identical. The deflection was reduced to 30% by applying the suggested balancing method.

Comparative study on displacement measurement sensors for high-speed railroad bridge

  • This paper presents a comparative study of displacement measurement using four sensors that are being used in the field: they are a ring gauge, a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV), a vision-based displacement measurement system (VDMS), and an optoelectronic displacement meter (ODM). The comparative study was carried out on a brand-new high-speed railroad bridge designed to produce displacements within a couple of millimeters under the loading of a high-speed train. The tests were carried out on a single-span steel plate girder bridge two times with different train loadings: KTX and HEMU. The measured displacement is compared as raw and further discussion was made on the measurement noise, peak displacement, and frequency response of four sensors. The comparisonsare summarized to show the pros and cons of the used sensors in measuring displacement at a typical high-speed railroad bridge.

A Michelson type interferometer which employed heterodyne signal process technique was built to measure the frequency and amplitude of vibration. The output signal of the fast photodetector was a frequency modulated signal centered at 40 MHz. The signal from the detector was amplified and downconverted to intermediate frequency centered at 1 MHz after mixing process. The voltage output that was proportional to the velocity of the moving surface(PZT) was obtained using PLL. The spectrum of the FM signal was analyzed and integration method was introduced to obtain amplitude information. This LDV can be used to measure the vibration of MEMS devices, automobiles, HDD and CDP.

  • This paper concerns on modal analysis of mechanical structures by using a continuous scanning laser Doppler vibrometer. In modal analysis the Hilbert transform based approach is superior to the Fourier transform based approach because of its fine accuracy and its flexible experimental settings. In this paper the Hilbert transform based approach is extended to measure area mode shape data of a structure by simply modifying the scanning pattern ranging the entire surface of the structure. The effectiveness of this proposed method is illustrated along with results of numerical simulation for a rectangular plate.

  • Thermal deformation of Digital Television effect friction noise directly. However there was no methods to find and to solve the thermal friction noise which is huge problem in Digital Television In this study, to figure out occurrence cause of friction noise of the product, we measured thermal deformation of the product to organize a triggering device united with Laser Doppler Vibrometer(LDV) which turned occurrence moment of thermal friction noise into a possibility to measure. In conclusion, we could offer an effective information of design, and ensured ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) measure technique which is more detailed than the past way.
