  • Machining accuracy is affected by quasi-static errors of machining center. Since machine errors have a direct influence upon both the surface finish and geometric shape of the finished workpiece, it is very important to measure the machine errors and to compensate these errors. The laser measurement method for identifying geometric errors of machine tool has the disadvantages such as high cost, long calibration time and usage of volumetric error synthesis model. Accordingly, this paper deals with analysis of the geometric errors of a machine tool using ball bar test without using complicated error synthesis model. Statistical analysis method was adopted in this paper for deriving geometric errors using hemispherical helix ball bar test. As a result of experiment, geometric errors of the vertical machining center are compensated by 88%.

  • For tensile tests, Vickers hardness tests and microstructure tests, plate-type and box-type specimens of austenitic 316L stainless steels were produced by a conventional machining (CM) process as well as two additive manufacturing processes such as direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) and direct metal tooling (DMT). The specimens were irradiated up to a fast neutron fluence of 3.3 × 109 n/cm2 at a neutron irradiation facility. Mechanical performance of the unirradiated and irradiated specimens were investigated at room temperature and 300 ℃, respectively. The tensile strengths of the DMLS, DMT and CM 316L specimens are in descending order but the elongations are in reverse order, regardless of irradiation and temperature. The ratio of Vickers hardness to ultimate tensile strength was derived to be between 3.21 and 4.01. The additive manufacturing processes exhibit suitable mechanical performance, comparing the tensile strengths and elongations of the conventional machining process.

  • Self-Assembled Monolayers(SAMs) by alkanethiol adsorption to thin metal film are widely being investigated for applications as coating layer for anti-stiction or friction reduction and in fabrication of micro structure of molecular and bio molecular. Recently, there have been many researches on micro patterning using the advantages of very thin thickness and etching resistance in selective etching of thin metal film of Self- Assembled Monolayers. In this report, we present the micromachining thin metal film by Mask-Less laser patterning of alknanethiolate Self-Assembled Monolayers.

  • Engineering ceramics as sapphire are widely used in industry owing to their superior mechanical and corrosion properties. However, micromachining of sapphire is a considerable challenge due to its transparency. Recently, direct ablation of sapphire has been demonstrated with a visible laser pulse at sufficiently high laser intensity. In this work, the theoretical model for pulsed laser ablation of sapphire is suggested and numerical analysis is carried out using the model. Sapphire ablation begins with plasma generation by the laser interaction with surface defects, impurities and contaminations in the initial stage of machining. Subsequent absorption of the visible laser beam can be explained by three mechanisms: metalization of sapphire surface due to the EUV radiation from the hot plasma, increments of surface roughness and temperature-dependent absorption coefficient. Comparison of the computation results with experimental observation indicates that the proposed model of sapphire is reasonable.

  • Direct Laser Melting (DLM) of $Ti-xTiH_2$ (mixing ratio x = 2, 5, 10 wt.%) blended powder is characterized by producing porous titanium parts. When a high energy laser is irradiated on a $Ti-TiH_2$ blended powder, hydrogen gas ($H_2$) is produced by the accompanying decomposition of the $TiH_2$ powder, and acts as a pore-forming and activator. The hydrogen gas trapped in a rapidly solidified molten pool, which generates porosity in the deposited layer. In this study, the effects of a $TiH_2$ mixing ratio and the associated processing parameters on the development of a porous titanium were investigated. It was determined that as the content of $TiH_2$ increases, the resulting porosity density also increases, due to the increase of $H_2$ produced by $TiH_2$. Also, porosity increases as the scan speed increases. As fast solidified melting pools do not provide enough time for $H_2$ to escape, the faster the scan speed, the more the resulting $H_2$ is captured by the process. The results of this study show that the mixing ratio (x) and laser machining parameters can be adjusted to actively generate and control the porosity of the DLM parts.

  • Micro lens array(MLA) is widely used in information technology(IT) industry fields for various applications such as a projection display, an optical power regulator, a micro mass spectrometer and for medical appliances. Recently, MLA have been fabricated and developed by using a reflow method having the processes of micro etching, electroplating, micro machining and laser local heating. Laser thermal relaxation method is introduced in marking of microdots on the surface of densified glass. In this paper, we have proposed a new direct fabrication process using UV laser local thermal-expansion(UV-LLTE) and investigated the optimal processing conditions of MLA on the surface of negative photo-resist material. We have also studied the 3D shape of the micro lens obtained by UV laser irradiation and the optimal process conditions. And then, we made chrome mold by electroplating. After that, we made MLA using chrome mold by hot embossing processing. Finally, we have measured the opto-physical properties of micro lens and then have also tested the possibility of MLA applications.

  • Laser has been called a "Quantum Machine" because of its mechanism of generation since the development on July 7,1960.by T.H.Maiman. We can now use this machine as a tool for manufacturing in industries. At present, 45kW CO2 laser, 10kW Nd:YAG laser, 6kW LD pumped YAG laser and 4kW direct diode laser facilities are available for welding a heavy steel plate of 40mm in thickness and for cutting metals at high speed of 140m/min. Laser Materials Processing is no longer a scientific curiosity but a modern tool in industries. Lasers in manufacturing sector are currently used in welding, cutting, drilling, cladding, marking, cleaning, micro-machining and forming. Recently, high power laser diode, 10kW LD pumped YAG laser, 700W fiber laser and excimer laser have been developed in the industrialized countries. As a result of large numbers of research and developments, the modem laser materials processing has been realized and used in all kinds of industries now. In the present paper, metallurgical studies on laser materials processing such as porosity formation, hot cracking and the joint performances of steels and aluminum alloys and dissimilar joint are discussed after the introduction of laser facilities and laser applications in industries such as automotive industry, electronics industry, and steel making industry. The wave towards the use of laser materials processing and its penetration into many industries has started in many countries now. Especially, development of high power/quality diode laser will be accelerate the introduction of this magnificent tool, because of the high efficiency of about 50%, long life time and compact.
