For surface hardening of a continuous casting mold component, a fundamental metallurgical investigation on dissimilar laser clads (Cu-NiCrBSi) is performed. In particular, variation behavior of microstructures and mechanical properties (hardness and wear resistance) of dissimilar clads during long-term service is clarified by performing high-temperature post-clad heat treatment (temperature range: 500 ~ 1,000 ℃ and isothermal holding time: 20 ~ 500 min). The microstructures of clad metals (as-clads) consist of fine dendrite morphologies and severe microsegregations of the alloying elements (Cr and Si); substrate material (Cu) is clearly confirmed. During the post-clad heat treatment, the microsegregations are totally homogenized, and secondary phases (Cr-based borides and carbides) precipitated during the short-term heat treatment are also almost dissolved, especially at the heat treatment conditions of 950 ℃ for 500 min. Owing to these microstructural homogenization behaviors, an opposite tendency of the surface mechanical properties can be confirmed. In other words, the wear resistance (wear rate) improves from 4.1 × 10-2 ㎣/Nm (as-clad condition) to 1.4 × 10-2 ㎣/Nm (heat-treated at 950 ℃ for 500 min), whereas the hardness decreases from 453 HV (as-clad condition) to 142 HV (heat-treated at 950 ℃ for 500 min).
An oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) layer was formed on Zircaloy-4 tubes by a laser beam scanning process to increase mechanical strength. Laser beam was used to scan the yttrium oxide ($Y_2O_3$)-coated Zircaloy-4 tube to induce the penetration of $Y_2O_3$ particles into Zircaloy-4. Laser surface treatment resulted in the formation of an ODS layer as well as microstructural phase transformation at the surface of the tube. The mechanical strength of Zircaloy-4 increased with the formation of the ODS layer. The ring-tensile strength of Zircaloy-4 increased from 790 to 870 MPa at room temperature, from 500 to 575 MPa at $380^{\circ}C$, and from 385 to 470 MPa at $500^{\circ}C$. Strengthening became more effective as the test temperature increased. It was noted that brittle fracture occurred at room temperature, which was not observed at elevated temperatures. Resistance to dynamic high-temperature bursting improved. The burst temperature increased from 760 to $830^{\circ}C$ at a heating rate of $5^{\circ}C/s$ and internal pressure of 8.3 MPa. The burst opening was also smaller than those in fresh Zircaloy-4 tubes. This method is expected to enhance the safety of Zr fuel cladding tubes owing to the improvement of their mechanical properties.

The crack-free AlGaN template has been successfully grown by using selective area growth with triangular GaN facet. The triangular GaN stripe structure was obtained by vertical growth rate enhanced mode with low growth temperature of $950^{\circ}C$ and high growth pressure of 500 torr. The lateral growth rate enhanced mode of AlGaN for crack-free and flat surface was also investigated. Low pressure of 30 torr and high V/III ratio of 4400 were favorable for lateral growth of AlGaN. It was confirmed that the $4{\mu}m$ -thick $Al_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}N$ was crack-free over entire 2-inch wafer. The dislocation density of $Al_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}N$ was as low as ${\sim}7.6{\times}10^8/cm^2$ measured by cathodoluminescence. Based on the high quality AlGaN with low dislocation density, the ultraviolet laser diode epitaxy with cladding, waveguide and GaN/AlGaN multiple quantum well (MQW) was grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The stimulated emission at 349 nm with full width at half maximum of 1.8 nm from the MQW was observed through optical pumping experiment with 193 nm KrF laser. We also have fabricated the deep ridge type ultraviolet laser diode (UV-LD) with $5{\mu}m-wide$ and $700{\mu}m-long$ cavity for electrical properties. The turn on voltage was below 5 V and the resistance was ${\sim}55{\Omega}$ at applied voltage of 10 V. The amplified spontaneous emission spectrum of UV-LD was also observed from pulsed current injection.

The cladding materials remaining after reprocessing process of the nuclear fuel, generally called as hulls, are classified as a high-level radioactive waste. They are usually packaged in the container for disposal after being compacted, melted, or solidified into the matrix. The efforts to fabricate a better ingot for a more favorable disposal to the environment have failed due to the technical difficulties encountered in the chemical decontamination method. In the early 1990s, the accumulation of radio-chemical data on hulls and the advent of new technology such as a laser or plasma have made the pre-treatment of the hulls more efficient. This paper summarizes the information regarding the radio-chemical analysis of the hull through a literature survey and determines the characteristics of the hull and depth profile of the radio-nuclides within the hull thickness. The feasibility study was carried out to evaluate the reduction of the radioactivity by peeling off the surface of the hull with the application of laser technology.

Metal three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies are mainly classified as powder bed fusion (PBF) and direct energy deposition (DED) methods according to the method of application of a laser beam to metallic powder. The DED method can be used to fabricate fine and hard 3D metallic structures by applying a strong laser beam to a thin layer of metallic powder. The PBF method involves slicing 3D graphics to be a certain height, laminating metal powders, and making a 3D structure using a laser. While the DED method has advantages such as laser cladding and metallic welding, it causes problems with low density when 3D shapes are created. The PBF method was introduced to address the structural density issues in the DED method and makes it easier to produce relatively dense 3D structures. In this paper, thin lines were produced by using PBF 3D printers with stainless-steel powder of roughly $30{\mu}m$ in diameter with a galvano scanner and fiber-transferred Nd:YAG laser beam. Experiments were carried out to find the optimal conditions for the width of a line depending on the processing times, laser power, spot size, and scan speed. The optimal conditions were two scanning processes in one line structure with a laser power of 30 W, spot size of $28.7{\mu}m$, and scan speed of 200 mm/s. With these conditions, a minimum width of about $85.3{\mu}m$ was obtained.

High power, short wavelength red laser diodes (LDs) have attracted significant interests in a variety of fields due to their advantages in terms of reliability, compactness and cost. The higher brightness for human eyes is required, the shorter wavelength like 630 nm is necessary with higher output power. In this respect, LDs are promising as alternative candidates of gas or dye lasers for such applications due to their small size, high optical/electrical power conversion efficiency, robustness and so on. The crystalline quality of GaInP-AlGaInP multiple quantum wells (MQWs) and AlInP cladding layers is a crucial part in the device performance of GaInP red LDs. Here, we first investigated the effect of Si diffusion on the optical properties of GaInP-AlGaInP MQWs grown with different growth temperatures. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) measurements revealed that both the Mg and Si diffusion into MQW active region was significant. To reduce such diffusion, we employed undoped Mg and Si diffusion barrier and could improve the properties.Without both Mg and Si diffusion barriers, no lasing emission was observed. However, lasing emission was observed clearly for the red LDs with both Mg and Si diffusion barriers. We then investigated the temperature dependent optical properties of MQW layers grown with different well thicknesses (6, 8 and 10 nm). When the well thickness was 10 nm, the better crystalline quality was obtained. However, the observed LD performances were similar, probably due to the defects and impurities in the AlGaInP layer. Further investigation with the detailed analyses will be presented later.
Oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) alloy has been developed to increase the mechanical strength of metallic materials; such an improvement can be realized by distributing fine oxide particles within the material matrix. In this study, the ODS layer was formed in the surface region of Zr-based alloy tubes by laser beam treatment. Two kinds of Zr-based alloys with different alloying elements and microstructures were used: KNF-M (recrystallized) and HANA-6 (partial recrystallized). To form the ODS layer, $Y_2O_3$-coated tubes were scanned by a laser beam, which induced penetration of $Y_2O_3$ particles into the substrates. The thickness of the ODS layer varied from 20 to $55{\mu}m$ depending on the laser beam conditions. A heat affected zone developed below the ODS layer; its thickness was larger in the KNF-M alloy than in the HANA-6 alloy. The ring tensile strengths of the KNF-M and HANA-6 alloy samples increased more than two times and 20-50%, respectively. This procedure was effective to increase the strength while maintaining the ductility in the case of the HANA-6 alloy samples; however, an abrupt brittle facture was observed in the KNF-M alloy samples. It is considered that the initial microstructure of the materials affects the formation of ODS and the mechanical behavior.

Optical fiber temperature sensing systems have incomparable advantages over traditional electrical-cable-based monitoring systems. However, the fiber optic interrogators and sensors have often been rejected as a temperature monitoring technology in real-world industrial applications because of high cost and over-specification. This study proposes a multiplexed fiber optic temperature monitoring sensor system using an economical Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) and Hard-Polymer-Clad Fiber (HPCF). HPCF is a special optical fiber in which a hard polymer cladding made of fluoroacrylate acts as a protective coating for an inner silica core. An OTDR is an optical loss measurement system that provides optical loss and event distance measurement in real time. A temperature sensor array with the five sensor nodes at 10-m interval was economically and quickly made by locally stripping HPCF clad through photo-thermal and photo-chemical processes using a continuous/pulse hybrid-mode laser. The exposed cores created backscattering signals in the OTDR attenuation trace. It was demonstrated that the backscattering peaks were independently sensitive to temperature variation. Since the 1.5-mm-long exposed core showed a 5-m-wide backscattering peak, the OTDR with a spatial resolution of 40 mm allows for making a sensor node at every 5 m for independent multiplexing. The performance of the sensor node included an operating range of up to $120^{\circ}C$, a resolution of $0.59^{\circ}C$, and a temperature sensitivity of $-0.00967dB/^{\circ}C$. Temperature monitoring errors in the environment tests stood at $0.76^{\circ}C$ and $0.36^{\circ}C$ under the temperature variation of the unstrapped fiber region and the vibration of the sensor node. The small sensitivities to the environment and the economic feasibility of the highly multiplexed HPCF temperature monitoring sensor system will be important advantages for use as system-integrated temperature sensors.

Anti-resonant hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (AR-HCF) has unique advantages, such as low nonlinearity and high damage threshold, which make it a promising candidate for high-power laser delivery at distances of tens of meters. However, due to the special structure, optical properties such as mode-field profile and bending loss of hollow-core fibers are different from those of solid-core fibers. These differences have limited the widespread use of AR-HCF in practice. In this paper we conduct numerical analysis of AR-HCFs with different structural parameters, to analyze their influences on an AR-HCF's optical properties. The simulation results show that with a 23-㎛ air-core diameter, the fundamental mode profile of an AR-HCF can well match that of the widely used Nufern's 20/400 fiber, for nearly-single-mode power delivery applications. Moreover, with the ratio of cladding capillary diameter to air-core diameter ranging from 0.6 to 0.7, the AR-HCF shows excellent optical characteristics, including low bending sensitivity while maintaining single-mode transmission at the same time. We believe these results lay the foundation for the application of AR-HCFs in the power delivery of high power fiber laser systems.
