  • The commercial rearing of polyphagous Indian tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta Drury being practiced on naturally grown primary food plants like Terminalia arjuna, (Arjun) Terminalia tomentosa (Asan), and Shorea robusta (Sal) available in the tropical forests of central India, at times, is seriously affected by the disease- Pebrine, caused by Nosema sp., a microsporidian pathogen. The present investigation on comparative larval, silk gland weight and also cocoon parameters in Pebrine-free and Pebrine-infected ecorace of tasar silkworm Antheraea mylitta Drury (Daba TV), illustrates the tasar silkworm larvae infected with pebrine disease causing heavy losses to the economy of the silk industry.

  • Effects of topical application of 100, 200 and 300ng/$m\ell$ of 3-indole butyric acid (3IBA) on larval parameters were studied in polyvoltine Pure Mysore breed of B. mori. Each concentration was administered independently, at 36h to III, IV & V instars, at 48h to IV & V instars, and at 72h to V instar larvae. Of the various dosages used, the repeated applications of loons of 3-IBA at 36h to III, IV & V instars resulted in a significant increase in larval weight, silk gland weight, cocoon shell weight and fecundity and a significant decrease in larval duration and cocooning percentage when compared with the corresponding parameters of the untreated controls.

  • The southwestern Australian frog Crinia georgiana (Anura; Myobatrachidae) inhabits ephemeral pools in which the tadpoles often face desiccation. Under these conditions selection on tadpoles can be severe and can directly affect fitness during the aquatic as well as the terrestrial developmental stages. A quantitative genetic study using a half-sib breeding design was conducted to understand the genetic effects on larval life-history traits. We found no significant additive genetic variance in any of larval traits. Except for hatching period, heritability estimates based on females were high in egg size, larval period, snout-vent length, and weight at metamorphosis, suggesting non-additive genetic effects. These results indicate that any response to selection during hatching and larval periods should be predominately governed by non-additive genetic effects in C. georgiana.

  • To determine effects of temperatures and photoperiods on larval development of the mulberry longicorn beetle, Apriona germari, the larvae were reared at various rearing temperatures and under the various photoperiods on an artificial diet. The larval period of A. germari was extended as long as the temperature was lowered. Also the larval development in terms of length and weight of larvae was increased. However, survival rate during larval stage significantly decreased at 15$^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$ than at $25^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$. The results indicated that the favorable temperature for artificial diet rearing of A. germari fell at least above $25^{\circ}C$ constantly. In photoperiod conditions, survival rate and larval development for A. germari were obviously most effective under a photoperiod of 14L:10B. As a result in artificial diet rearing of a. germari at $25^{\circ}C$ and under a photoperiod of 14L:10D was mostly favorable in terms of larval development and period.

  • Yellow mealworms (Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus) are very promising insects for the food and feed industry. Because mealworms are in the spotlight as an alternative protein source in the future, it is necessary to develop efficient rearing techniques for mass production. To evaluate the effects of brewer's yeast (BY) on the growth of mealworms, Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus, the mealworms were fed with wheat bran (WB) diets containing different levels of BY (0, 10, 30, 50, and 70%). Larval survival, larval weight, development time, pupal weight and eclosion rate were monitored for 12 weeks. The results showed that mealworms fed on the diets containing 30% and 50% of BY have significantly higher weight gain, specific growth rate and daily weight gain, and lower larval duration than fed the control diet (100% WB) and other BY diets (10% and 70% BY). Larval survival on the diets containing 30% and 50% of BY was higher than on control diet. Pupal weight and eclosion rate were not significantly different among all diets. In conclusion, we suggest feeding the diet containing 30% of brewer's yeast with wheat bran in order to increase the production of mealworms.

  • The effect of topical application 100,300 and 500 $\mu$g/ ml with Mineral Salts of magnesium sulphate and potassium nitrate on economic parameters was ana- lyzed following treatment of last larval stadium. The treated larvae showed significantly decreased larval weight and silk gland weight in all the treated groups along with other decreased Iarval, cocoon and adult parameters. The female cocoon weight was significantly decreased in all the treated groups with decreased female cocoon shell weight and male cocoon weight at 300 and 500$\mu$g/ml respectively. The length and weight of filament was significantly decreased at 300 and 500 $\mu$g/ml respectively and denier at 500 $\mu$g/ ml. The fecundity decreased significantly in 300 and 500 $\mu$g/ml treated groups when compared with the corresponding parameters of the carrier control.

  • A new silkworm variety 'Yangwonjam'for both of spring and autumn rearing season is F$_1$hybrid between Jam 143, a Japanese race bred from H5R1/P8503 and Jam 144, a Chinese race from M8312/8190. This is the first both parent sex-limited larval marking variety in Korea, and which contributes to eggs production of F$_1$hybrid silkworm with saving labor. Jam 143, Japanese parent of the 'Yangwonjam'showed high GCA in pupation percentage and Jam 144, Chinese parent showed high GCA in pupation percentage and single cocoon weight. In the local adaptability test performed at 8 local areas in spring of 1998, Yangwonjam records 1% higher in pupation percentage and 5%, 4% lower in single cocoon weight, cocoon yield from 10,000 3rd molted larvae respectively than the check variety Kumokjam. Also in the resistance test against unfavorable rearing condition performed in spring of 1997, Yangwonjam records 9%, 14% lower in single cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight respectively than the check variety, but showed 1% higher in pupation percentage than check variety.

  • Mealworms, Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), are widely used as food sourcefor animal rearing as well as human diet. Conventionally, mealworms raised on wheat bran. In this study, we investigated the effects of brewer's spent grain (BSG) on the growth of mealworm larvae to reduce the rearing cost. We prepared five different diets with various BSG content, 0, 10, 30, 50, and 70% of heated air dried BSG with wheat bran. We compared survivorship, larval weight, developmental duration, pupation rate, and pupal weight of five different groups of T. molitor raised on these five diets. The larval survivorships were almost similar with the control group except a group with 70% of BSG. For the larval weight, groups with 30% and 50% of BSG gained more weight than that with control treatment, 0% of BSG. For the developmental period, the groups with 30% of BSG took less time compared to the control group. In all treatment groups, more than 90% of pupation rate were observed. Especially, the group with 30% of BSG showed highest pupation rate among the five groups. Wheat bran with 30~50% of BSG was the optimal diet for successive insect rearing among the five diet treatments. Based on this study, we concluded that adding BSG to wheat bran helps to improve the quality of T. molitor and to reduce the rearing period.
