Tenebrio molitor larvae contain large amounts of proteins, lipids and other functional materials, enabling this insect to be used as an edible food source in animal feeds and for industrialization. Although many efforts have been made to set up mass rearing systems, few studies have been conducted to establish optimal rearing conditions for the production of high quality T. molitor larvae. Herein we investigated 1) the effects of additional diets on the survival and fecundity of the insect, 2) the relationship between oviposition period and the uniformity of larval size, 3) the effects of rearing density and temperature on insect development, and 4) the storage stability of eggs and pupae at low temperatures given possible temporary production discontinuation. The addition of carrot and zucchini to the traditional wheat bran diet significantly increased the survival and fecundity rate of adult T. molitor. Of the three different oviposition sampling periods (3, 7, and 14 days) used to investigate the uniformity of the hatched larvae in each treatment, the period of 3 and 7 days provided higher uniformity than the 14 days oviposition period. Larval development was faster at $30^{\circ}C$ than at 20, 25, and $35^{\circ}C$. Interestingly, oviposition rates were highest at $20^{\circ}C$ but showed much slower larval development and lower uniformity at $30^{\circ}C$. Regarding the effect of larval rearing densities (1, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 larvae per 90 mm diam. dish), larval weight was significantly reduced at higher rearing densities, but larval longevity and length were not influenced by rearing density. The 30 larvae/dish is suggested to be a reasonable density to be applied to mass production systems. When kept at $4^{\circ}C$, T. molitor eggs showed a significant reduction in hatching rate; however, when stored under the same conditions, pupae emergence rates remained high until 10 weeks, suggesting that storage at low temperatures is more suitable for the pupal stage than the egg stage. Our findings suggest that an increase in T. molitor adult survival and fecundity rates and a uniformity of hatched larval development can be achieved with the following recommendations: a combination diet (including wheat bran), a 7-day oviposition period; a larvae-rearing temperature of $30^{\circ}C$, a rearing density of 30 larvae/dish, and the storage of pupal stages at low temperatures in the case of rearing discontinuation. This study serves as a strong foundation for the successful mass production of high quality T. molitor larvae.
The cadmium (Cd) toxicological effects on the fertilized eggs, embryos and larvae were investigated in olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus water-borne exposed to Cd. The survival rate and hatching success of the embryos significantly diminished in treated groups in dependence of the Cd concentration. Significant differences were found at ${\geq}30{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ exposed groups compared to the control group. A significant increase of malformation of the embryo was observed at ${\geq}20{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ exposed groups. They usually include such symptoms as clouded yolk-sac abnormality, fin erosion and spinal curvature. A significant reduction in the survival rate of the larvae was observed in ${\geq}20{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ exposed groups with accompanied by the disorder. Notably, in larvae, a concentration as low as $10{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ exposed groups caused significant elevated abnormalities that is incidences of spinal cord deformation, abnormal eyes, deformation of the head region and severe developmental delay.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of rotifer fed the different diets in high density culture on larval flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. Potifer was enriched with enrichment supplements, Marine ${\alpha}\;and\;{\omega}-yeast$ for 6 hours after being cultured with freshwater Chlorella for 18 hours during high density culture before it was fed to larval flounder. And rotifer was culutured with marine Chlorella and freshwater Chlorella for 24 hours during semi-continuous high density culture before it was fed to larval flounder. Culture tanks(21 working volum) set for rotifer culture in a water bath($28{\circ}C$) were continuously supplied with oxygen gas. The content of n-3 HUFA to fatty acids in rotifer(dry weight ${\%}$) enriched with Marine ${\alpha}$ for 6 hours and cultures with marine Chlorella for 24 hours were higher than that in rotifer enriched with ${\omega}-yeast$ for 6 hours or cultured with freshwater Chlorella for 24 hours. The growth and survival rates of larval flounder fed on rotifer enriched with Marine ${\alpha}$ for 6 hours and cultured with marine Chlorella for 24 hours were higher than those of larval flounder fed on rotifer enriched with ${\omega}-yeast$ for 6 hours or cultured with freshwater Chlorella for 24 hours. And the content of n-3 HUFA of larval flounder fed on rotifer enriched with Marine ${\alpha}$ for 6 hours was higher than that of larval flounder fed on other rotifers, The results from this study indicated that rotifer culture with marine Chiorelia would be suitable for the high density culture and effective diet for the growth of larval flounder.
Several of our recent studies have focused on mass production of the marine Cladoceran Diaphanosoma celebensis, which can serve as a feed substitute for Artemia nauplii in the culture of larval marine fish. We compared the growth and survival rates of tiger puffer Takifugu rubripes fed D. celebensis with those fed Artemia. The group fed D. celebensis showed an increase in growth from 0.10 g to 1.78 g, while the group fed enriched Artemia had a growth from 0.10 g to 0.92 g. The survival rate of fish fed D. celebensis was 86.7% while that of fish fed enriched Artemia was 51.1%, indicating that the former group was superior to the latter both in growth and survival rate. Fatty acid analysis revealed that D. celebensis fed Nannochloropsis oculata and Schizochytrium sp. had an eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) content of 16.42% and a docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content of 3.93%. Meanwhile, juvenile tiger puffer fed D. celebensis had an EPA content of 9.12% and a DHA content of 10.69%. Juvenile tiger puffer fed D. celebensis had a similar n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid content to that of tiger puffer fed enriched Artemia which had an EPA content of 5.82% and a DHA content of 15.90%, indicating that no additional enrichment was required.
To evaluate the effects of pesticides to parasite eggs, Ascaris suum eggs were incubated with 5 different pesticides (1:1,500-1:2,000 dilutions of 2% emamectin benzoate, 5% spinetoram, 5% indoxacarb, 1% deltamethrin, and 5% flufenoxuron; all v/v) at $20^{\circ}C$ for 6 weeks, and microscopically evaluated the egg survival and development on a weekly basis. The survival rate of A. suum eggs incubated in normal saline (control eggs) was $90{\pm}3%$ at 6 weeks. However, the survival rates of eggs treated with pesticides were 75-85% at this time, thus significantly lower than the control value. Larval development in control eggs commenced at 3 weeks, and $73{\pm}3%$ of eggs had internal larvae at 6 weeks. Larvae were evident in pesticide-treated eggs at 3-4 weeks, and the proportions of eggs carrying larvae at 6 weeks ($36{\pm}3%-54{\pm}3%$) were significantly lower than that of the control group. Thus, pesticides tested at levels similar to those used in agricultural practices exhibited low-level ovicidal activity and delayed embryogenesis of A. suum eggs, although some differences were evident among the tested pesticides.
This study was conducted to investigate the influence of environmental factors such as water temperature, salinity, rearing density and feeding amount on the survival and development of larvae in surf clam, Tresus keenae. As a result of this study, the optimum conditions of larval rearing were as follows. The optimum range of water temperature is 20℃ to 24℃, the optimum salinity is 30 psu, the optimum rearing density is 5 ind./ml and the supply of mixed feed organism for larva rearing such as Isochrysis galbana, Chaetoceros simplex and Tetraselmis suecica is 10×104 cells/ml. The results of this study suggest that the optimum conditions of environmental factors in larval rearing of Tresus keenae contribute to productivity improvement through rapid growth and high survival.
In autumn season residual period of nicotine is observed in the larval duration, weight of molting larvae at the various stages, percentage of delayed molting larvae, and survival rate up to the 3rd stage from the 1st season to the 3rd season and up to the stage for four seasons, respectively. Mulberry tree is planted in pot from June 18, 1973 to August 4, 1973 and placed every other row between tobacco variety of Hicks cultivated in mulching system and control is prepared in the Sericultural Experiment Station, placing in the every ridge of mulberry field with the four seasons ; 5 day isolation (1st season), 15 day isolation (2nd season), 25 day isolation (3rd season), and 50 day isolation (4th season). 1) 1st and 3nd instar larvae fed with the tobacco stained mulberry leaf has longer larval duration for the four seasons, as compared with those of the control, increasing 12% in index with 28 hours, 17% in index with 37 hours, 23% in index with 50 hours, 17% in index with 43 hours from the 1st season to the fourth season and the 3rd to the 4th instar larvae, increasing 18% in index with 55 hours. 2) 2nd instar molting larvae, 3rd instar molting larvae from the 1st to the 4th season and 4th instar molting larvae at the 4th season decrease their larval weight respectively, as compared with the control. 3) Percentage of delayed molting larvae from the 3rd stage to the 4th stage goes up higher than that of the control in the End larval stage at the 3rd to the 4th season, in the 3rd larval stage at the 1st, the End, and the 4th season, and in the 4th larval stage at the 4th season, respectively. 4) Survival rates in the 2nd larval stage at the 2nd season to the 4th season, in the 3rd larval stage at the 1st to the 4th season, and in the 4th larval stage at the 4th season respectively are higher than that in the control.

We raised the white-spotted flower chafer, Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis, from the larvae stage using a fermented mulberry sawdust-base diet at 25℃ and 16:8 h light:dark photoperiod. First, we determined the optimal density of the neonate larvae to be introduced into a rearing box (543 × 363 × 188 mm). The survival rates of the larvae were higher than 80% at 90 days after rearing at 100-175 larval densities but reduced by more than 10% at 200 larval density. The larval weights at 100 to 150 larval densities were similar; however, the weights at 175 and 200 larval densities were lower than those at 100 larval densities, indicating that the rate of weight gain increased under lower density. Based on these results, we inferred that 100-150 larvae was the optimal density. Second, we investigated the storage conditions of the last instar larvae under low temperatures. Four weight groups (1.8-2.0, 2.0-2.3, 2.3-2.5, and 2.5 g) of larvae were stored at 4, 8, and 10℃, respectively. All the larvae at 4℃ died 70 days after storage, whereas 80% of the larvae survived at 8℃ 70 days after storage, indicating that high larval weight was associated with high survival rates. The adults that emerged from larvae with more than 2.3 g and stored for up to 50 days at 4℃ laid few eggs. However, the adults that emerged from all larval weight groups stored for 70 days at 8℃ and 10℃ laid several eggs successfully. Based on these results, we inferred that the last instar larvae with more than 2.3 g could be stored for 30-50 days at 8℃.
The citrus leafminer, Phyllocnistis citrella (Lepidoptera: Gracillaridae), is an important pest that decreases the productivity of citrus trees by attacking citrus leaves, and especially it causes a severe damage during the young growth stage. In this study, we investigated the distribution of eggs on the leaves of shoots according to the position and the survival rate of this pest in the field condition. The occurrence patterns of P. citrella eggs in citrus orchards were largely affected by the occurrence of shoots. Even if the adults were still being attracted in the pheromone traps, the eggs were not observed on leaves when the growth of shoots was stopped. The density of P. citrella eggs in the citrus shoots peaked at the fifth or sixth leaf from the terminal leaf, and over 90% of the eggs were found in the first to eighth leaves as a whole. In 2015 and 2016, the average survival rate of larvae surviving to pupa was 1.4%, and the rate of survival to adults was 0.2%, indicating that most of them died. Furthermore, we have discussed the management strategy of P. citrella considering the distribution of eggs and the larval survival rate in the citrus shoots.
Edible insects are reported to be rich in protein, minerals and vitamins, and much attention has been paid to them as a future food source. In Korea, they were massively reared and sold. In order to enhance the market value of edible insects for industrialized mass production, it is important to develop the safe and nutritious feed sources for rearing them are needed. In this study, a chlorella-free control feed (Exp1) and six experimental feeds supplemented with 0.5~2.0% liquid or powder types of chlorella were formulated. Protaetia brevitarsis and Allomyrina dichotoma, registered as food ingredients in Korea, were fed with the designed feeds and parameters of growth including larval survivorship, larval body weight, and larval period were analyzed. When chlorella added, larval survivorship was increased 2~13%(p>0.05) and 9~22%(p<0.05) in each beetle compared to the control. Interestingly, the larval period of chlorella powder-added groups was shortened by 24 days (Exp3, p<0.05) in P. brevitarsis and 19 days (Exp4, p<0.01) in A. dichotoma. Meanwhile, some parameters, crude protein, crude fiber, copper, zinc, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorous, in chlorella-added groups of P. brevitarsis were also higher than the control group. Therefore, chlorella could promote the larval growth performance of these two beetles and be used as a feed additive in rearing them.
