  • Occurrence of oriental corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis, and yield in a paddy-upland rotation field for 8 maize (Eolrukchal 1, Heugjeom 2, Miheukchal, Ilmichal, Heukjinjuchal, Chalok 4, Mibaek 2, Daehakchal) and 7 sorghum (Hwanggeumchal, Anzunbaengisusu, Moktaksusu, Sodamchal, DS-202, Nampungchal, Donganme) varieties has been surveyed. In a monitoring study using a pheromone trap carried out from 15 May to 10 September, the density of O. furnacalis adults increased rapidly from about 2 weeks after maize planting and reached the highest density at mid June. After that, their density was fluctuated a little at earlier September. The number of the damaged maize and invasive pores on the stem of 2 maizes and sorghum varieties was examined. The mean number of the damaged maize per 20 plants was 19 and 18 plants, and the number of invasive pores was 1.8 and 1.4 per maize stem in Daehakchal and Mibaek 2, respectively. In a survey carried out at harvest period using 8 maize varieties, the damaged ratio was 94%, 92%, 71%, 64%, 54%, 52%, and 45% in Daehakchal, Mibaek 2, Ilmichal, Eolrukchal 1, Chalok 4, Miheukchal, and Heugjeom 2, respectively. The number of invasive pore per Ilmichal stem was 1.4 and that of the others was less than 1.0 per stem. In addition, the damaged ratio of maize ears was 50% in Ilmichal, 40% in Heukjinjuchal, 37% in Daehakchal, etc. The damage pattern of 2 sorghum varieties, Nampungchal and Donganme, by O. furnacalis larvae was steeply increased from planting to 2 months and the trend was continued up to earlier August. At this time, the mean number of damaged sorghum was 13 and 9.2 plants for Nampungchal and Donganme, and the number of invasive stem pores was 1.06 and 0.46, respectively. In another survey carried out at harvest period for 7 sorghum varieties, their damaged ratio was 95% in DS-202, 76% in Moktaksusu, 75% in Sodamchal, 67% in Nampungchal, 57% in Anzunbaengisusu, 46% in Donganme, and 34% in Hwanggeumchal. The damage of sorghum varieties was much higher and severer than that of maizes by O. furnacalis larvae. The number of invasive pores on a sorghum stem was 1.7 in DS-202, 1.4 in Moktaksusu, 1.3 in Sodamchal, 1.1 in Nampungchal, 1.0 in Anzunbaengisusu, 0.5 in Donganme, and 0.4 in Hwanggeumchal. Meanwhile, there was no distinct connection between damaging results and yields of maizes and sorghums by O. furnacalis larvae in a paddy-upland rotation field. These results from this study can be applicable for the establishment of a management strategy to control Oriental corn borer in paddy-upland rotation fields for maize and sorghum.

  • We determined the effects of neuroactive compounds known as synthetic larval settlement inducers on the settlement of the Pacific oyster C. gigas pediveliger on the larval collector. Six types of the inducers, serotonin (5-HT), ${\gamma}$-amino butyric acid (GABA), L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), norepinephrine, epinephrine and methyl bromide (MB) were tested. All the chemicals induced larval settlement, MB being the most effective with settlement rate of $42.7{\pm}2.7%$, followed by GABA ($35.4{\pm}2.0%$), 5-HT ($29.1{\pm}2.2%$), L-DOPA ($19.2{\pm}2.1%$), epinephrine ($15.2{\pm}0.9%$), and norepinephrine ($11.0{\pm}1.2%$). The chemicals ${\gamma}$-amino butyric acid and methyl bromide were also better in terms of settled density on the collector with their respective density of $1.97{\pm}1.42$ and $2.37{\pm}1.86ind/cm^2$, reminiscent of being most effective candidates for a larval settlement inducer in the oyster hatchery.

  • Application of the Asian ladybird (Harmonia axyridis) to control several species of aphids in the plastic green houses in mind, control effects of aphid populations regulated by the Asian ladybird were observed. The green peach aphid, the turnip aphid, and the cotton aphid were present on mustard plants, Angelia utlis, ornamental kales, and egg plants at greenhouses in spring, summer, and winter. Adults and larvae of the Asian ladybird used in experiments were collected from aggregated sites at Taejon in the autumn and reared on the cotton aphid in the laboratory. In winter, more number of adults and larvae of ladybirds than in other seasons were needed to control aphid population in successively double plastic greenhouses with supplied subterranean water for keeping warmth. In spring and summer, it was possible to keep the aphid populations low when necessary by manipulating ladybird populations according to the density of aphids. On the other hand, the innate increasing rate of aphid, the aphid population density at the time of applying ladybird, the predacious ability of ladybird at specific developmental stages, and needed periods should be taken into account to control aphids. In addition, the environmental factors, for example, optimum temperature and humidity should be considered to be biologically effective when ladybirds are released to greenhouses.

  • This study evaluated the hepatoprotective effect of fermented Protaetia brevitarsis larvae (FPB) in ethanol-induced liver injury mice. As a result of amino acids in FPB, 18 types of amino acids including essential amino acids were identified. In the results of in vitro tests, FPB increased alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activities. In addition, FPB treatment increased cell viability on ethanol- and H2O2-induced HepG2 cells. FPB ameliorated serum biomarkers related to hepatoxicity including glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, glutamine pyruvic transaminase, total bilirubin, and lactate dehydrogenase and lipid metabolism including triglyceride, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Also, FPB controlled ethanol metabolism enzymes by regulating the protein expression levels of ADH, ALDH, and cytochrome P450 2E1 in liver tissue. FPB protected hepatic oxidative stress by improving malondialdehyde content, reduced glutathione, and superoxide dismutase levels. In addition, FPB reversed mitochondrial dysfunction by regulating reactive oxygen species production, mitochondrial membrane potential, and ATP levels. FPB protected ethanol-induced apoptosis, fatty liver, and hepatic inflammation through p-AMP-activated protein kinase and TLR-4/NF-κB signaling pathways. Furthermore, FPB prevented hepatic fibrosis by decreasing TGF-β1/Smad pathway. In summary, these results suggest that FPB might be a potential prophylactic agent for the treatment of alcoholic liver disease via preventing liver injury such as fatty liver, hepatic inflammation due to chronic ethanol-induced oxidative stress.

  • The oblong rockfish, Sebastes oblongus has recently drawn attention from aquaculturists because of its marketable value and tolerance against winter water temperature in the southern coastal waters of the Korean peninsula. In the study of temperature effect on growth, water temperature $16^{\circ}C$ showed best growth. The upper temperature of the fish showed feeding activity was $27^{\circ}C$ over which the fish showed no longer feeding activity. Stocking density was also a critical factor affecting the growth and survival of the juvenile fish. The best growth was in the density of 200 juveniles/L, while the highest survival was in the density of 100 juveniles/L. A feeding experiment was conducted to determine the effects of feeding frequency on growth and survival. A feeding scheme of twice a day was good enough in the sense of growth, survival, and economy. These results indicate that parameters such as water temperature, density, tank size and feeding frequency are consideration for best seed production of the fish.

  • The community structure of meiobenthos was studied in the sediment of Kongfjorden, Spitsbergen of Svalbard Island in the Arctic Sea. Samples of meiobenthos were collected in August, 2003. Meiobenthic organisms were collected by SCUBA and van veen grab or acryl sub-corers 34mm in internal diameter, and were taken from upper sediment to a depth of 3cm at each station. A total of 26 meiofaunal groups were found in the sediment of Spitsbergen in Svalbard Island. Nematodes were the most dominant faunal group. Sarcomastigophorans, benthic harpacticoids, and nauplius larvae of crustaceans, were also important components of the meiobenthic community of Kongsfjorden. All of these low faunal groups were comprised of more than 90% of total meiobenthos at every station. The total density of meiobenthos at each station was highest at station MeG 6 $(3,583{\pm}1,137inds./10cm^2)$, and lowest at station $MeG9(28{\pm}1inds./10cm^2)$. Meiobenthos in general showed the highest density in the upper 1cm layer. This may be associated with food and oxygen supply to subsurface. Harpacticoids showed extreme preference at the surface and little presence in layers deeper than 2cm. These animals may be less resistant to oxygen deficiency, and nauplius also showed the same trend. However, in St. MeG 8 and 9, meiobenthos were dense at depths of more than 0-1cm, at especially at depths of 2-3m because of relatively easy penetration of oxygen. Based on the results of cluster analysis, three meiobenthos assemblages were distinguished: one was in the outer and two were in the inner fjord. Station SCU 5 was grouped with the meiobenthos assemblage located in the outer fjord. The outer ford community was characterised by : 1) a relatively low mean number of meiobenthos taxa, 2) a relatively high density of harpacticods and nauplius. One of the inner ford communities (a group of four nation: MeG 2, 3, 8, 9) was in the proximity of the glaciers. Specifically, it was characterised by : 1) a low mean number of meiobenthos taxa, 2) a low density. The other inner ford community was characterised by both a high density and great mean number of meiofaunal taxa.

  • The cutaneous erythrophore differentiation from larvae to adult in bombina orientalis-the Korean fire bellied toad-is discussed electron microscopically to reveal the structural changes of carotenoid vesicles and pterinosomes in the process of erythrophore differentiation. Typical structure of adult erythrophores distributed beneath the basement membrane is composed much carotenoid vesicles and a small quantity of pterinosomes. Marginal electron density of these carotenoid vesicles is higher than those of internal regions and pterinosomes have many concentric lamellae. The very first differentiated erythrophores are apeared before and after the foreleg developing stage of metamorphosis and red ventral color is just appeared about $1\\sim2$ weeks after metamorphosis. About 1 year after metamorphosis, external body color of the young toad is similar to adult but the morphology of pigment granules observed in these erythrophores differs from that of adult in structure and electron density. At this stage, the differentiated level of pterinosomes is not remarkable and the accumulation state of carotenoid pigments in erythrophores is also relatively low.

  • The life history, seasonal occurrence of larval population and natural enemies of Tea leaf roller (Caloptilia theivora (Walshingham) were investigated in field-age. C. theivora had 6 generations a year. The developmental periods from egg to adult emergence were 32.1~38.6 days in spring and fall, and 24.8~32.7 days in summer. The average longevities of adults were 8.4~14.5 days in spring and fall, and 6.3~8.6 days in summer. The average number of eggs laid by a female were 55~71 throughout the season. Larval population density of C. theivora showed 3~4 peaks from middle may in 1992 and 1993. However, population density of 194 was pretty low in early season and exhibited a peak in late September-early October. C. theivora overwintered in pupal stage on the leaves. Four hymenopterous parasitoids of C. theivora larvae were identified ; they are Stenomesius japonicus (Ashmead), Sympiesis ringoniellae Kamijo, Elasmus sp., and S. dolichogaster Ashmead which is dominant.
