  • Toxic effect of landfill leachate on the larvae and juvenile stage of the river puffer fish, Takifugu obscurus, were investigated in order to assess severity of environmental impact of leachate effluent on the general population of estuarine fishes. A short-term toxic experiment was designed to test both laboratory hatched larvae and juveniles (5, 10 and 15 mm in length) and in-situ juveniles (30 and 45 mm in length) using the leachate concentrations between 0 and 16%. Lethal concentrations of 50% mortality ($LC_{50}$) were observed using Spearman-karber Method. 24hr-$LC_{50}$ appeared at the leachate concentrations ranging from 3.03 to 8.57%, 48hr-$LC_{50}$ at 2.73 to 6.21 %, 72hr-$LC_{50}$o at 2.45 to 5.53%, and 96hr-$LC_{50}$ at 2.38 to 4.93%, respectively. Leachate concentrations between 0.69 and 1.51% induced 96hr-$LC_1$. Respiratory frequency was significantly affected even at low leachate concentrations between 0.5 and 1.0% (P < 0.05). These results suggest that the leachate effluents may cause a harmful impact on the physiology of river puffer fish, especially for younger cohorts.

  • The spawning season, growth and feeding habit of tubesnout, Aulichthys japonicus were examined from the samples collected by a small beam trawl in the Zostera marina belt at the coastal water off Hamduck, Cheju Island, from May 1993 to May 1994. Tubesnout was the dominant species of overall 58 species collected in the study area throughout the year. The larvae and juvenile of tubesnout in the frequency distributions of body length began to appear in the Z. marina belt in March, and adults disappeared after May in the following year. The gonad weight index (GWI) and the condition factor (K) were high from November 1993 to January 1994 for males, while females were high from February to May 1994. Although tubesnout is an oviparous fish, males have the urogenital papilla. These results suggest that they were fertilized between November and January, and then males seemed to be died or move into other places. Females were examined to spawn from February to May. The stomach contents of tubesnout were dominated by copepoda smaller than ca. 1mm, Paracalanus, Oithona, Acartia, Oncaea and Harpacticoidae, accounting for 97% of total food items. The feeding habit of tubesnout did not vary by size. The fishes fed on Calanus, Euchaeta and decapoda larvae larger than ca. 3mm in March and April during the spawning season.

  • This study examines the osteological development of the Bartail Flathead Platycephalus indicus in the cranial, vertebral, caudal bones and pelvic, sholder grilde bones for the purpose of taxonomic studies. Adult P. indicus were collected from the Yeosu coast and artificially fertilized. Juveniles were reared at 18.5~21.8℃ (average 20.0℃±0.5℃). At 3 days after hatching (total length (TL) 3.49±0.32 mm), the parasphenoid and clavicle began to ossify. At 14 days after hatching (6.34±0.24 mm), the parietal and exoccipital bones of the cranium, the six branchiostegal rays of the hyoid, the urostyle of the caudal bones and the actinost of the shoulder girdle had ossified. At 39 days after hatching (11.39±0.86 mm), the preorbital and suborbital bones of the cranium were ossified, ossification of the pelvis girdle had begun, and the sholuder girdle was fully ossified. The number of vertebral columns were 26. At 45 days after hatching (12.63±0.62 mm), the nasal and supraorbital bones were ossified and the entire skeleton of the juvenile was completely ossified.

  • The egg development and early life history of Korean endemic fish, Squalidus multimaculatus (Gobioninae), were investigated. The eggs from the females were obtained by injecting 10 IU/g of human chorionic gonadotropin and inseminated by wet method in the laboratory. The fertilized eggs were 0.8~0.9 mm in diameter and had no oil globules. The embryo began to hatch about 65 hrs after fertilization under water temperature of $24{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The newly-hatched larvae were 2.5~3.1 mm in total length, and their mouth and anus were not opened. Four days after hatching, the postlarva were 4.0~4.2 mm in total length, and their york sacs were completely absorbed. They entered the juvenile stage when all fin-rays were formed at 30 days after hatching, and their total length were 11.2~15.7 mm. At 45 days after hatching, the external from of juveniles were similar to those of adults (total length were 18.8~22.5 mm), and 80 days after hatching, the external characteristics from of juveniles were same to adults (total length were 25.7~35.9 mm).

  • Bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus RAFINESQUE, has bred widely in the various districts of Korea since the Office of Fishery transplanted it into our country from Japan in December, 1969. On August 17, 24 in 1985, bluegill were caught in the reservoir of Habuk-Myon, Yangsan-Gun, $Ky\breve{o}ngsangam-Do$, Korea. They spawned in the rearing aquarium on July 13 and August 2 in 1986. The eggs of this species are adhesive and demersal. The size of the egg diameters were varied from 1.18 to 1.30 mm. Hatching took place in 40 hours after fertilization at the water temperature of $24.3-25.4^{\circ}C$. The newly botched larvae were 3.75-4.05 mm in total length possessing yolk sac, and 29-30 mytomes. Many melanophores were evenly distributed on the entire body. Ten days after hatching, the postlarvae attained 6.05-6.35 mm in total length. The yolk sac was completely absorbed and the width of the pectoral finfold had reached the maximum size. One month fifteen days after hatching, the juvenile attained 25.20 mm in total length.

  • Black rockfish Sebastes schlegeli is one of scopaenid fish giving birth to yolk-sac larvae and distributed around the coast of Korea and Japan, and is one of main species which is cultured in Korea. The difffrentiation of thyroid gland and the changes of thyroid hormones (THs) concentrations in the whole body during early development of this species were examined and the relationship between thyroid gland and their growth will be presented. Total length (TL) and body weight (BW) of the larva at the parturition were 6.3${\pm}$0.1 mm and 3.6${\pm}$0.1 mg, respectively. The larvae transformed to juvenile after 30th day after parturition. According to Hoshiai(1977), they had gown into stage Fl (TL 13.2${\pm}$0.9 mm, BW 46.5${\pm}$1.5 mg) at 50th day. The thyroid gland of black rockfish was first observed histologically in hatching larvae in mother fish. The larvae just after parturition have 1${\sim}$3 of the thyroid follicles diffrentiated between basibranchial bone and ventral aorta, at the base of the first gill arch. In this time, thyroid follic1e number (TFN),thyroid follicle diameter (TFD) and thyroid cell height (TCH) were 1.6${\pm}$0.8 pieces/inds., 18.1${\pm}$0.6 ${\mu}$m and 4.1${\pm}$0.2 ${\mu}$m, respectively. TFN and TFD at 50th day were increased to 32.5${\pm}$6.9 pieces/inds. and 41.5${\pm}$1.7 ${\mu}$m, respectively. These results indicate that they are related to the growth of black rockfish during early development. However, TCH indicates that the activity of thyroid gland appearedat special day, eg. 5, 20 and 50th day, suggesting that TCH may have some role in the physiological activity. L-thyroxine (T$_4$)concentration decreased sharply to 10 days after parturition, and at 25th day (metamorphosis stage) increased markedly to 3.44${\pm}$0.93ng/g fish. After this time, T$_4$ concentration decreased at 35th day, but then increasedagain to the highest concentration, 5.63${\pm}$0.70ng/g fish. 3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine (T$_3$) concentration declined sharply from just after pafurition (4.96${\pm}$1.90 ng/g fish) to 5th day (0.30${\pm}$0.07 ng/g fish). However T$_3$ concentration increased markedly to 0.95${\pm}$0.11 ng/g fish at 30th day and then did not significantly change until 45th day, increased also sharply to 1.67${\pm}$0.23 ng/g fish at 50th day.

  • The gobiid fish, Luciogobius guttalus Gill has an anguilliform with some blackish and reddish brown color in life. It grows up to 90mm in total length. The specimens have been collected from several localities in the southern parts of Korea and Hokkaido, Japan. During the ebb tide, the fish was found in high level of intertidal zone exposed to the air among pebbles in the hollows and slopes of rocks. There are also some other small gobiid fishes comprising 3 species of relative gobies and 1 species of blennioid fish. A total of 5 egg masses were collected from the coast of Haeundae in April to May 1990. Each egg mass was deposited in one layer on the underside of a stone embedded in pebbles and guarded by the male parent. The eggs are club-shaped ranging from 2.71 to 2.80mm in long axis and from 0.65 to 0.74mm in short axis. The eggs were hatched in 98 hours after incubatied at the temperature varying from 19.5 to $25.5^{\circ}C$The newly hatched larvae were from 3.85 to 4.00mm in total length with 35~36 myomeres. In eleven days after hatching, total length reached 5.50mm. The part of the fin-fold of the future dorsal and anal fins became high. In sixteen days after hatching, the lavae averaged 6.20mm in total length and the caudal notochord flex at $45^{\circ}$. The larvae reached the juvenile stage in 48~50 days after hatching and attained 12.80~14.00mm in total length, and all fin-rays was formed. Ossification of the cranium took place at 5.50mm of mean total length in parasphenoid and basioccipital. Ossification of the visceral skeleton occurred in areas where active movements of bones are required, notalbly in the parts of feeding and respiration. Vertebrae began to develop from the anterior end to ossify posteriorly. Neural and haemal spines of vertebrae ossified always prior to the corresponding centra. When larvae reached to about 6.60mm in mean total length (17~18 days after hatching), jaw bones were more repidly ossified than vertebrae and cranium. Ossification of all bones nearly completed when the larvae reached to 13.40mm in mean total length (47~50 days after hatching).
