Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is an attractive machining technique but it requires electrically conductive ceramic materials. In this study, Alumina matrix composites reinforced with CNTs were fabricated through CNT purification, mixing, compaction and spark plasma sintering (SPS) processes. $Al_2O_3$ nanocomposites with the different CNT concentrations were synthesized. The mechanical and electrical characteristics of $Al_2O_3$/CNTs composites were examined in order to apply the materials to the EDM process. In addition, micro-EDM using wire electrical discharge grinding (WEDG) was conducted under the various EDM parameters to investigate the machining characteristics of machined hole by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM). The results show that $Al_2O_3$/CNTs 10%Vol. was more suitable than the other materials because high conductivity and large discharge energy caused violent sparks resulting in bad machining accuracy and surface quality.
With increasing demands for large-scale micro-optical components in the field of digital display, the establishment of large-scale fabrication technology fur polymeric patterns has become a priority. The starting point of any polymer replication process is the mold, and the mold often has flat surface. However, It is very hard to replicate large-scale micro patterns using the flat mold, because the cost of large-scale flat mold was very high, and some uniformity and releasing problems were often occurred in large scale flat molding process. In this study, a UV roll imprinting system to overcome the financial and fabrication issues of large-scale pattern replication process was designed and constructed. As a practical example of the system, a lenticular lens with radius of curvature of $223{\mu}m$ and pitch of $280{\mu}m$, which was used to provide wide viewing angle in projection TV, was designed and fabricated. The roll stamper was fabricated using direct machining process of aluminum roll base. Finally, the shape accuracy and uniformity of roll imprinted lenticular lens sheet were measured and analyzed.
Recently, the trends of TFT-LCD are large scale and thin thickness, so, the demands of Light Guide Panel(LGP) which is able to substitute for prism sheets are appeared. Functions of LGP obtaining polarization of light of the prism sheet as well as the incidence and reflection of light are demanded. This prismless type LGP to complete functions of the existing LGP and polarization at once must be supported by micro machining technology of LGP surface. In this research, we have used the STAMPER method for the mass product and In-Line process, and the optimized conditions are established by analyzing the cutting force and conditions according to the material and processing properties when the prismless type LGP mold is fabricated. Parameters of the cutting condition were the workpiece and cutting depth.
We report an ultra-precision lathe designed to machine micron-scale features on a large-area roll mold. The lathe can machine rolls up to 600 mm in diameter and 2,500 mm in length. All axes use hydrostatic oil bearings to exploit the high-precision, stiffness, and damping characteristics. The headstock spindle and rotary tooling table are driven by frameless direct drive motors, while coreless linear motors are used for the two linear axes. Finite element method modeling reveals that the effects of structural deformation on the machining accuracy are less than $1{\mu}m$. The results of thermal testing show that the maximum temperature rise at the spindle outer surface is approximately $0.5^{\circ}C$. Finally, performance evaluations of the error motion, micro-positioning capability, and fine-pitch machining demonstrate that the lathe is capable of producing optical-quality surfaces with micron-scale patterns with feature sizes as small as $20{\mu}m$ on a large-area roll mold.
This paper shows the method of fabrication of a micro lens array comprised of a Nipkow disk used in a large-area, high-speed confocal microscopy. A Nipkow disk has two components, a micro lens array disk and a pinhole array disk. The microlens array focuses illumination light onto the pinhole array disk and redirects reflected light from a surface to a sensor. The micro lens which are positioned in order on a disk have a hemispheric shape with a few tens of micron in diameter, and can be fabricated by a variety of methods like mechanical machining, semiconductor process, replication process like imprinting process. This paper shows how to fabricate the micro lens array which has a long focal length by reflow and imprinting process.
An experimental study was carried out to observe the characteristics of impingement of assist gas from a rectangular supersonic nozzle on kerf surface in laser machining. A micro-scale supersonic (Mach number 2.0) rectangular nozzle system was designed and fabricated for the purposes, and hot tests of the performance of the nozzle system was proceeded in the ITI corporation laboratory. For various related parameters such as laser powers, nozzle pressures and cutting speeds, the quality of the frontal view of cut edge surfaces was observed by a microscope. In the study, it was shown that the application of the present micro-rectangular supersonic nozzle in an off-axis configuration made it possible to cut a mild steel, by combinations of relatively low laser - powers, large standoff distances, and assist gas with no oxygen, which was not achieved by conventional laser cutting processes.

Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools possessing high hardness and abrasive wear resistance are particularly suited for drilling of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites, where tool life and consistent hole quality are important. While PCD presents superior performance when drilling CFRP, it is unclear how it performs when drilling multi-stack materials such as CFRP-titanium (Ti) stacks. This comparative study aims to investigate drilling of a Ti plate stacked on a CFRP panel when using PCD tools. The first sequence of the drilling experiments was to drill 20 holes in CFRP only. CFRP-Ti stacks were then drilled for the next 20 holes with the same drill bit. CFRP holes and CFRP-Ti stack holes were evaluated in terms of machined hole quality. The main tool wear mechanism of PCD drills is micro-fractures that occur when machining the Ti plate of the stack. Tool wear increases the instability and the operation temperature when machining the Ti plate. This results in high drilling forces, large hole diameter errors, high surface roughness, wider CFRP exit thermal damage, and taller exit Ti burrs.
Contact-type Linear Encoder-like Capacitive Displacement Sensor (CLECDiS) is a novel displacement sensor which has wide measurable range with high resolution. The sensor, however, is very sensitive to relative rotational alignment between stator and mover of the sensor as well as its displacement. In addition to, there can be some disturbances in the relative rotational alignment, so some noises occur in the sensor's output signal by the disturbances. This negative effect of the high sensitivity may become larger as increasing sensitivity. Therefore, this negative effect of the high sensitivity has to be compensated and reduced to achieve nanometer resolution of the sensor. In this study, a new type capacitive linear encoder with a mechanical guide is presented to reduce the relative rotational alignment problem. The presented method is not only to reduce the alignment problem, but also to assemble the sensor to the stage conveniently. The method is based on a new type CLECDiS that has mechanical guide autonomously. In the presented sensor, when the device is fabricated by micro-machining, the guide-rail is also fabricated on the surface of the sensor. By the direct fabrication of the guide-rail with high precision micro-machining, errors of the guide-rail can be reduced significantly. In addition, a manual yaw alignment is not required to obtain large magnitude of the output signal after the assembly of the sensor and the stage. The sensor movement is going to follow the guide-rail automatically. The prototype sensor was fabricated using the presented method, and we verify the feasibility experimentally.
This paper describes the micro cutting of wear resistant tungsten carbides using PCD (Poly-Crystalline Diamond) cutting tools in performance with SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) direct observation method. Turning experiments were also carried out on this alloy (V50) using a PCD cutting tool. One of the purposes of this study is to describe clearly the cutting mechanism of tungsten carbides and the behavior of WC particles in the deformation zone in orthogonal micro cutting. Other purposes are to achieve a systematic understanding of machining characteristics and the effects of machining parameters on cutting force, machined surface and tool wear rates by the outer turning of this alloy carried out using the PCD cutting tool during these various cutting conditions. A summary of the results are as follows: (1) From the SEM direct observation in cutting the tungsten carbide, WC particles are broken and come into contact with the tool edge directly. This causes tool wear in which portions scrape the tool in a strong manner. (2) There are two chip formation types. One is where the shear angle is comparatively small and the crack of the shear plane becomes wide. The other is a type where the shear angle is above 45 degrees and the crack of the shear plane does not widen. These differences are caused by the stress condition which gives rise to the friction at the shear plane. (3) The thrust cutting forces tend to increase more rapidly than the principal forces, as the depth of cut and the cutting speed are increased preferably in the orthogonal micro cutting. (4) The tool wear on the flank face was larger than that on the rake face in the orthogonal micro cutting. (5) Three components of cutting force in the conventional turning experiments were different in balance from ordinary cutting such as the cutting of steel or cast iron. Those expressed a large value of thrust force, principal force, and feed force. (6) From the viewpoint of high efficient cutting found within this research, a proper cutting speed was 15 m/min and a proper feed rate was 0.1 mm/rev. In this case, it was found that the tool life of a PCD tool was limited to a distance of approximately 230 m. (7) When the depth of cut was 0.1 mm, there was no influence of the feed rate on the feed force. The feed force tended to decrease, as the cutting distance was long, because the tool was worn and the tool edge retreated. (8) The main tool wear of a PCD tool in this research was due to the flank wear within the maximum value of $V_{max}$ being about 260 $\mu\textrm{m}$.
