  • Formidable growth of Internet technologies has revealed challenging issues about its scale and performance evaluation. Modeling and simulation play a central role in the evaluation of the behavior and performance of the large-scale network systems. Large numbers of nodes affect simulation performance, simulation execution time and scalability in a weighty manner. Most of the existing simulators have numerous problems such as size, lack of system theoretic approach and complexity of modeled network. In this work, a scalable discrete-event modeling approach is described for studying networks' scalability and performance traits. Key fundamental attributes of Internet and its protocols are incorporated into a set of simulation models developed using the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) approach. Large-scale network models are simulated and evaluated to show the benefits of the developed network models and approaches.

  • This paper reviews search methods of multiple reasonable paths to implement multimodal public transportation network of Seoul. Such a large scale multimodal public transportation network as Seoul, the computation time of path finding algorithm is a key and the result of path should reflect route choice behavior of public transportation passengers. Search method of alternative path is divided by removing path method and deviation path method. It analyzes previous researches based on the complexity of algorithm for large-scale network. Applying path finding algorithm in public transportation network, transfer and loop constraints must be included to be able to reflect real behavior. It constructs the generalized cost function based on the smart card data to reflect travel behavior of public transportation. To validate the availability of algorithm, experiments conducted with Seoul metropolitan public multimodal transportation network consisted with 22,109 nodes and 215,859 links by using the deviation path method, suitable for large-scale network.

  • This paper presents a multi-modal neural network composed of a preprocessing module and a multi-layer neural network module in order to enhance the nonlinear characteristics of neural network. The former module is based on spectral method using Chebyschev polynomials and transforms input data into spectra. The latter module identifies the system using the spectra generated by the preprocessing module. The omnibus numerical experiments show that the method is applicable to many a nonlinear dynamic system in the real world, and that preprocessing using Chebyschev polynomials reduces the number of neurons required for the multi-layer neural network.

  • This Paper proposes the architecture of WDM(wavelength division multiplexed) based large scale photonic packet switch network, which is composed of the FC(frequency converter) and OM (output module). The features of the proposed WDM based photonic packet switch network are 2-stage switch network, and WDM based internal optical link that is connected between FC and OM. This paper evaluates the internal call blocking characteristics of the photonic packet switch network. In results, we confirmed that the proposed WDM based photonic packet switch network has the potentiality in the practical implementation.

  • In this paper, we study how to achieve the maximum capacity under delay constraints for large mobile wireless networks. We develop a systematic methodology for studying this problem in the asymptotic region when the number of nodes n in the network is large. We first identify a number of key parameters for a large class of scheduling schemes, and investigate the inherent tradeoffs among the capacity, the delay, and these scheduling parameters. Based on these inherent tradeoffs, we are able to compute the upper bound on the maximum per-node capacity of a large mobile wireless network under given delay constraints. Further, in the process of proving the upper bound, we are able to identify the optimal values of the key scheduling parameters. Knowing these optimal values, we can then develop scheduling schemes that achieve the upper bound up to some logarithmic factor, which suggests that our upper bound is fairly tight. We have applied this methodology to both the i.i.d. mobility model and the random way-point mobility model. In both cases, our methodology allows us to develop new scheduling schemes that can achieve larger capacity than previous proposals under the same delay constraints. In particular, for the i.i.d. mobility model, our scheme can achieve (n-1/3/log3/2 n) per-node capacity with constant delay. This demonstrates that, under the i.i.d. mobility model, mobility increases the capacity even with constant delays. Our methodology can also be extended to incorporate additional scheduling constraints.

  • Many different types of network equipments are deployed in a large-scale IP network. In this operating environment, network service providers suffer from difficulty in controlling various equipments simultaneously in case network faults happen in their overall or regional network due to physical link failure or abnormal traffic. This paper presents a policy-based methodology to control many different types of network equipments at the same time in abnormal cases. The key idea is that NMS(Network Management System) keeps vendor-neutral control policies in normal times and that when an abnormal case occurs in network, NMS transforms the selected policy into vendor-specific control commands and enforces them to various equipments simultaneously.

  • This paper presents identification and control of a 10-m antenna via accelerometers and angle encoder data. Artificial Neural Networks can be used effectively for the identification and control of nonlinear dynamical system such as a large flexible antenna. Some identification results are shown and compared with the results of conventional prediction error method. And we use a neural network inverse model for control the large flexible antenna. In the neural network inverse model, a neural network is trained, using supervised learning, to develop an inverse model of the antenna. The network input is the process output, and the network output is the corresponding process input. The control results show the validation of the ANN approach for identification and control of the 10-m flexible antenna.

  • A new type geometric and mathematical network reduction model is introduced. Large-scale network is analyzed with analytic approach. The graph has many nodes, branches and loops. Circuit equation are obtained from these elements and connection rule. In this paper, the analytic relation between voltage source has a mutual different graphic property. Node-reduction procedure is achieved with this circuit property. Consequently voltage source value is included into the adjacent node-analyzing equation. A resultant model equations are reduced as much as voltage source number. Matrix rank is (n-1-k), where n, k is node and voltage source number. The reduction procedure is described and verified with geometric principle and circuit theory. Matrix type circuit equation can be composed with this technique. The last results shall be calculated by using computer.

  • By managing not only geographical information but also various kinds of attribute data. GIS presents useful information for decision-makings. Most of decision-making problems using GIS can be formulated into network-optimization problems. In this study we deal with the implementation of network optimization system that extracts data from the database in GIS. solves a network optimization problem and present optimal solutions through GIS' graphical user interface. We design a nitwork optimization system and present some implementation techniques by showing a prototype of the network optimization system. Our network optimization system consists of three components : the interface module for user and GIS the basic network the program module the advanced network optimization program module. To handle large-scale networks the program module including various techniques for large sparse networks is also considered, For the implementation of the network optimization system we consider two approaches : the method using script languages supported by GIS and the method using client tools of GIS. Finally some execution results displayed by the prototype version of network optimization system are given.

  • Recently, the information visualization research community has given significant attention to graph visualization, especially visualization of social networks. However, visualization of information flows in a very large social network has not been studied in depth. However, information flows are tightly related to the structure of social networks and it shows dynamic behavior of interactions between members of social networks. Thus, we can get much useful information about social networks from information flows. In this paper, we present our research result that enables users to navigate a very large social network in Google Maps' method and to take a look at information flows on the network. To this end, we devise three techniques; (i) mapping a very large social network to a 2-dimensional graph layout, (ii) exploring the graph to all directions with zooming it in/out, and (iii) building an efficient query processing framework. With these methods, we can visualize very large social networks and information flows in a limited display area with a limited computing resources.
