  • The effects of root gap on welding residual stress and deformation are dealt with the multi-pass weldment with three kinds(0, 6, 30mm) of root gap by F.E.M common code, and then compared with experiment data. In this analysis, an 100% ramp heat input model was used to avoid numerical convergence problem due to an instantaneous increase in temperature near the fusion zone, and the effect of a moving arc in a two dimensional plane was also included. During the analysis, a small time increment was applied in a period with instantaneous temperature fluctuation while a large time increment was used in the rest period. The residual stress is distributed as symmetric types and maximum value is also equivalent when the weldment with 0mm and 6mm root gap is welded. In the case of 30mm root gap welding, the distribution of the residual stress extends over a wide range as asymmetric types due to the built-up weld, and most of the residual stress is biased in the side of a built-up weld part. In case of 0mm gap welding and 6mm gap welding, a little angular distortion occurs, but the level of deformation is small. When the weldment with 30mm root gap is welded, the angular deformation of the asymmetric types, however, occurs larger than the other specimens. The experimental and the analytic results show good coincidence and indicate that the welding residual stress and deformation distribution of 30 mm root gap specimen may be asymmetric and the amplitude is larger than those of root gap specimen under standard.

  • The GRACE satellite, Launched in March 2002, is applied to research on glacial melt of polar regions, glacial isostatic adjustment(GIA), sea level change, terrestrial water storage(TWS) variation of river basin and large-scale earthquake etc. In this research, the TWS variation of Yangtze river basin from August, 2002 to January, 2009 is analyzed using Level-2 GRACE monthly gravity field model. Particularly, gravity changes of the Three Gorges Dam during the impoundment process in 2003, 2006 and 2008 is observed by estimating equivalent water thickness(EWT). The research results show the distinct annual and seasonal changes of Yangtze river basin, and its amplitude of annual variation is 2.3cm. In addition, we compare the results with water resource statistics and hydrologic observation data to confirm the possibility of research of TWS variation of river basin using GRACE observation data, and also the satellite gravity data is of great help for the research on the movement and periodic changes of river basin.

  • Various soil behaviors usually occurring in the geotechnical problems, such as, cutting and embankments, stability of slope, seepage, consolidations, shearing failures and liquefaction, should be predicted and analyzed in any way. An approach of these predictions may be followed by the development of the constitutive equations as first and subsequently solved by numerical methods. The purpose of this paper is develop the constitutive equation of sands uder monotonic or cyclic loadings. The constitutive equation which is based on elasto-plastic theory, modified anisotropic consolidated stress parameter by Sekiguchi et al and Pender's theory is derived. And the equation is included a new stress parameter, hardening function, Bauschinger's effects and Pender's theory. The model is later evaluated and confirmed the validity by the test data of Ottawa sand, Banwol sand Hongseong sand. The following conclustions may be drawn: 1. The consititutive equation which is based on elasto-plastic theory, modified anisotropic consolidated stress parpameter by Sekiguchi et al and Pender's theory is derived. The equation in included a new stress parameter, hardening function, Bauschinger's effect and Pender's theory. 2. For Ottawa sand, the result of the constitutive equation shows a better agreement than that of Oka et al. The result of axial strain agrees well with the tested data. However, the result of horizontal strain is little bit off for the cyclic loadings or large stress. It is thought that the deviation may be improved by considering Poisson's ratio and precise measurement of shear modulus. 3. Banwol sand is used for the strain and stress tests with different relative densitites and confining pressures. The predeicted result shows a good agreement with the tested data because the required material parameters were directly measurd and determined form this laboratory. 4. For Hongseong sand, the tests under same amplitude of cyclic deviatoric stress shows a similar result with the tested data in absolute strain. It shows the acute shape of turning point because the sine wave of input is used in the test but the serrated wave in prediction.

  • For the simultaneous measurement of strain and damage signal a fiber Bragg grating sensor system with a dual demodulator was proposed. The dual demodulator is composed of a demodulator using a tunable Fabry-Perot filter measuring the low-frequency signal with large magnitude such as strain and the other using a passive Mach-Zehnder interferometer detecting the high-frequency signal with small amplitude such as impact or damage signal. Using the proposed fiber Bragg grating sensor system, both the strain and damage signals of a cross-ply laminated composite beam under tensile loading were simultaneously measured. The strain and damage signals detected by single fiber Bragg grating sensor showed that sudden strain shifts were accompanied with vibration at a maximum frequency of several hundreds of kilohertz at the instant of matrix crack propagation in the 90 degree layer in composite beam.

  • We observed a low-mass pre-main sequence star, HBC722 (also known as $LkH{\alpha}$ 188 G4), with Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse (CQUEAN) attached to 2.1 Otto Struve telescope at McDonald Observatory, USA. HBC722 is a new FU orionis-type object in the direction of NGC7000/IC5070, which produced large amplitude optical outbursts (${\delta}V$=4.7 mag over one year) for a few months and reached the peak in 2010 September. We carried out the photometric observation in SDSS r,i, and z band in 2011 April, July and August to monitor the long term decrease of its brightness. We also made continuous observation in r-band for half night in July, and whole two nights in August to investigate short term variability which could be related to the rotation of the central star or the inner circumstellar disk. In this poster, we present a preliminary result of the photometric observation for HBC722.

  • As the development of ultrahigh power laser system, the laser mirrors must require high-resistant and effectively cooled. So, the study for the optical multilayer systems having large thermal diffusivity become important. In this study, we designed and fabricated two-layer anti-reflection (AR) optical coating samples, in different evaporation conditions of coating speeds (10, 20 $\AA$/s) and substrate temperatures (50, 100, 150, 20$0^{\circ}C$), using two dielectric materials $MgF_2$ and ZnS which have different refractive indices and measured the through-plane thermal diffusivity by using photoacoustic effect. The optical thicknesses of $MgF_2$ and ZnS layer were fixed as 5/4λ (λ=514.5nm) and λ, respectively, and the thermal diffusivity of the samples fabricated in the different conditions was obtained from the measured amplitude of photoacoustic signals by changing chopping frequency of $Ar^+$ layer beam. The results told us that the thermal diffusivity of the sample fabricated in the condition of 10 $\AA$/s and 15$0^{\circ}C$ showed the largest value.

  • This paper shows the study of preswirl duct as an effective energy saving devices that have been devised and reviewed to support the propeller performance, especially for the ship of VLCC with large block coefficients. From the bare hull wake measurements, typical upper/lower asymmetry of hull wake at the propeller disk was found. The 2 kinds of pre-swirl duct, Unconventional half circular duct and Conventional circular pre-swirl duct have been designed and reviewed to recover the loss of propeller running in that condition. The general function of the pre-swirl duct was set to work against this asymmetry of wake and generate pre-swirled flow into the propeller against the propeller rotating direction. The optimum self propulsion tests with various angle configurations were carried out and the best configuration was decided. Accordingly, cavitation test was carried out with best configuration of unconventional half circular duct. The blade surface and tip vortex cavitation behaved smoother when the duct was mounted. The hull pressure amplitudes reflected this difference, so the hull pressure amplitude with duct was smaller than that of without duct.

  • In this study, the way how we can find the defects of motor windings in advance will be discussed. The magnetic flux spectrum in the high frequency region of the large motor was analyzed based on the actual fault practices related with motor windings. In case of defective motor relative amplitude ratio of the stator slot frequency to its sideband was very high compared to that of healthy motor. And the defective signal related with motor windings was indicated in advance in the magnetic flux spectrum prior to over 1 month before failure. Considering this aspect it can be estimated that magnetic flux spectrum in the high frequency region has the excellent predictive diagnostic capability.

  • The work presented in this paper concerns the aerodynamic characteristics and compression wave generated in a tunnel when a high speed train enters it. A large number of solutions have been proposed to reduce the amplitude of the pressure gradient in tunnels and some of the most efficient solutions consist of (a) addition ofa blind hood, (b) addition of inclined part at the entrance, and (c) holes in the ceiling of the tunnel. These are numerically studied by using the three-dimensional unsteady compressible Euler equation solver with ALE, CFD code, based on FEM method. Computational results showed that the smaller inclined angle leads to the lower pressure gradient of compression wave front. This study indicated that the most efficient slant angle is in the range from $30^{\circ}$ to $50^{\circ}$. The maximum pressure gradient is reduced by $26.81\%$ for the inclined angle of $30^{\circ}$ as compared to vertical entry. Results also showed that maximum pressure gradient can be reduced by $15.94\%$ in blind hood entry as compared to $30^{\circ}$ inclined tunnel entry. Furthermore, the present analysis showed that inclined slant angle has little effect on aerodynamic drag. Comparison of the pressure gradient between the inclined tunnel hood and the vertical entry with air vent holes indicated that the optimum inclined tunnel hood is much more effective way in reducing pressure gradient and increasing the pressure rise time.

  • Due to big demand for satellite and communication service using personal handheld terminals, demand for satellites with huge antennas is increasing correspondingly. While such large antennas are realized by various types of deployable antennas, the reflecting surface is made by many facets irrespective of deploying mechanisms. In order to analyze the faceted-reflector more accurately, an existing ray-tracing method is improved. The algorithm allows the rays to cross each other, which is the main characteristic of the faceted-reflector, and takes unevenness of amplitude and phase over the aperture plane into consideration. For the study of the effect of facet configuration, facet generating algorithm is devised. From the analysis algorithm and the facet-generating algorithm, it has been found that the number of facets in a radial direction affects both directivity and sidelobe level. On the other hand, the number of facets in a circumferential direction affects sidelobe level only.
