Liquid sloshing displays the highly nonlinear free surface fluctuation when either the external excitation is of large amplitude or its frequency approaches natural sloshing frequencies. Naturally, the accurate tracking of time-varying free surface configuration becomes a key task for the reliable prediction of the sloshing time-history response. However, the numerical instability and dissipation may occur in the nonlinear sloshing analysis, particularly in the long-time beating simulation, when two simulation parameters, the relative time-increment parameter a and the fluid mesh pattern, are not elaborately chosen. This paper intends to examine the effects of these two parameters on the potential-based nonlinear finite element method introduced for the large amplitude sloshing flow.

This work presents an experimental methodology specially developed for the nonlinear large-amplitude free vibration analysis of a clamped-free thin-walled metal column under self-weight. The main contribution of this paper is related to the developed experimental methodology which is based on a remote sensing technique using a computer vision system that integrates, on-line, the digital image acquisition and its treatment through special image processing routines. The main importance of this methodology is that it performs large deflections measurements without making contact with the structure and thus, not introducing undesirable changes in its behavior, for instance, appreciable changes in mass and stiffness properties. This structure presents, in most cases, highly non-linear responses, which cannot be reproduced by conventional finite-element softwares due, mainly, to the simultaneous influence of geometric and inertial non-linearities. To capture the non-linearities associated with large amplitude vibration and be able to describe the buckling process, the structure is discretized as a sequence of jointed coupled elastic pendulums. The obtained numerical results are favorably compared with the experimental ones, in the pre- and post-buckling regimes.

Large amplitude free vibration and thermal post-buckling of shear flexible Functionally Graded Material (FGM) beams is studied using finite element formulation based on first order Timoshenko beam theory. Classical boundary conditions are considered. The ends are assumed to be axially immovable. The von-Karman type strain-displacement relations are used to account for geometric non-linearity. For all the boundary conditions considered, hardening type of non-linearity is observed. For large amplitude vibration of FGM beams, a comprehensive study has been carried out with various lengths to height ratios, maximum lateral amplitude to radius of gyration ratios, volume fraction exponents and boundary conditions. It is observed that, for FGM beams, the non-linear frequencies are dependent on the sign of the vibration amplitudes. For thermal post-buckling of FGM beams, the effect of shear flexibility on the structural response is discussed in detail for different volume fraction exponents, length to height ratios and boundary conditions. The effect of shear flexibility is observed to be predominant for clamped beam as compared to simply supported beam.
Impulse characteristic of transmission tower grounding grid is needed for lightning protection of transmission line. This paper describes an outdoor experimental test facility established for large-scale grounding grid of transmission tower, made up of four impulse current generators and a circle current return electrode. The amplitude of impulse current is up to 100 kA. The results of the CDEGS simulation and GPR measurement reveal the uniform current distribution in the test arrangement. An impulse test for a square electrode with extended conductors is carried out in condition of three current waveforms with different amplitude. Based on the electrical network model and iterative algorithm method, a calculation model is proposed to simulate the impulse characteristic of large-scale grounding grid considering soil ionization. The curve of impulse resistance against the current amplitude shows the soil ionization both from the simulation and test. Deviation between the simulation and test result is less than 15%.
Using a Rheometries Dynamic Analyzer (RDA II), the dynamic viscoelastic properties of a semi-solid ointment base (vaseline) in large amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields were measured over a temperature range of $25{\sim}45^{\circ}C$ and the linear viscoelastic behavior in small amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields was investigated over a wide range of angular frequencies. In this article, the nonlinear viscoelastic behavior was reported from the experimentally obtained data and the effect of temperature on this behavior was discussed in detail. In addition, the angular frequency and temperature dependencies of a linear viscoelastic behavior were explained. Finally, the applicability of a time-temperature superposition principle originally developed for polymeric materials was examined using a shift factor. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) At very small strain amplitude region, vaseline shows a linear viscoelastic behavior independent of the imposed deformation magnitudes. Above a critical strain amplitude $({\gamma}_{0}=0.1{\sim}0.2%)$, however, vaseline exhibits a nonlinear viscoelastic behavior ; indicating that both the storage modulus and dynamic viscosity are sharply decreased with increasing deformation magnitude. (2) In large amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields, an elastic behavior (storage modulus) has a stronger strain amplitude dependence and begins to show a nonlinear behavior at a smaller strain amplitude region than does a viscous behavior (dynamic viscosity). (3) In small amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields, the storage modulus as well as the loss modulus are continuously increased as an increase in angular frequency and an elastic nature is always superior to a viscous behavior over a wide range of angular frequencies. (4) A time-temperature superposition principle can successfully be applicable to vaseline. This finding allows us to estimate the dynamic viscoelastic behavior of vaseline over an extraordinarily extended range (11 decades) of angular frequencies inaccessible from the experimentally measured range (4 decades).

A CFD simulation technique has been developed to handle the unsteady body motion with large amplitude by use of overlapping multi-block grid system. The three-dimensional, viscous and incompressible flow around body is investigated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations, and the motion of body is represented by moving effect of the grid system. Composite grid system is employed in order to deal with both the body motion with large amplitude and the condition of numerical wave maker in convenience at the same time. The governing equations, Navier-Stokes (N-S) and continuity equations, are discretized by a finite volume method, in the framework of an O-H type boundary-fitted grid system (inner grid system including test model) and a rectangular grid system (outer grid system including simulation equipments for generation of wave environments). If this study, several flow configurations, such as an oscillating cylinder with large KC number, are studied in order to predict and evaluate the hydrodynamic forces. Furthermore, the motion simulation of a Series 60 model advancing in a uniform flow under the condition of enforced roll motion of angle 20$^{\circ}$ is performed in the developed numerical wave tank.
In the current investigation, large amplitude free vibration behavior of shallow curved pipes (tubes) made of functionally graded materials is investigated. Properties of the tube are distributed across the radius of the tube and are obtained by means of a power law function. It is also assumed that all thermo-mechanical properties are temperature dependent. The governing equations of the tube are obtained using a higher order shear deformation tube theory, where the traction free boundary conditions are satisfied on the top and bottom surfaces of the tube. The von Kármán type of geometrical non-linearity is included into the formulation to consider the large displacements and small strains. Uniform temperature elevation of the tube is also included into the formulation. For the case of tubes which are simply supported in flexure and axially immovable, the governing equations are solved using the two-step perturbation technique. Closed form expressions are provided to obtain the small and large amplitude fundamental natural frequencies of the FGM shallow curved tubes in thermal environment. Numerical results are given to explore the effects of thermal environment, radius ratio, and length to thickness ratio of the tube on the fundamental linear and non-linear frequencies.
The experiment on study of ambient nose generated by large-amplitude internal waves in Luzon Strait is analyzed. Simultaneous observations of internal waves and characteristics of ambient noise generated by them were carried out. Fast 50-m solitary internal wave propagated to the northwest direction with speed more than 3 m/s was observed. It was revealed an enhancing of ambient noise level (at frequency range 1-2 kHz) at a time of passing the face side of the solitary wave.
We investigate long-term motions of the cable when cable has different types of periodic forcing term. Various different types of solutions are presented by using the 2nd order Runge-Kutta method under various initial conditions. There appeared to be small- and large-amplitude solutions which have different nodal structure.
The ratcheting and strain cyclic behaviour of joined conical-cylindrical shells under uniaxial strain controlled, uniaxial and multiaxial stress controlled cyclic loading are investigated in the paper. The elasto-plastic deformation of the structure is simulated using Chaboche non-linear kinematic hardening model in finite element package ANSYS 13.0. The stress-strain response near the joint of conical and cylindrical shell portions is discussed in detail. The effects of strain amplitude, mean stress, stress amplitude and temperature on ratcheting are investigated. Under strain symmetric cycling, the stress amplitude increases with the increase in imposed strain amplitude. Under imposed uniaxial/multiaxial stress cycling, ratcheting strain increases with the increasing mean/amplitude values of stress and temperature. The abrupt change in geometry at the joint results in local plastic deformation inducing large strain variations in the vicinity of the joint. The forcing frequency corresponding to peak axial ratcheting strain amplitude is significantly smaller than the frequency of first linear elastic axial vibration mode. The strains predicted from quasi static analysis are significantly smaller as compared to the peak strains from dynamic analysis.
