  • Four different buildings having various wall construction are analyzed for the effect of wall mass on the thermal performance and inside building air and wall temperature transient and also for calculating the energy consumption load. This analytical study was motivated by the experimental work of Burch et al. An analytical solution of one-dimensional, linear, partial differential equations is obtained using the Laplace transform method, Bromwich and modified Bromwich contour method. A simple dynamic model using steady state analysis as simplified methods is developed and results of energy consumption loads are compared with results obtained using the analytical solution. Typical Meteorological Year data are processed to yield hourly average monthly values. This study is conducted using weather data from two different locations in Korea: Daegu having severe weather in summer and winter and Jeju having mild weather almost all year round. There is a significant wall mass effect on the thermal performance of a building in mild weather condition. Buildings of heavyweight construction with insulation show the highest comfort level in mild weather condition. A proportional controller provides the higher comfort level in comparison with buildings using on-off controller. The steady state analysis gives an accurate estimate of energy load for all types of construction. Finally, it appears that both mass and wall insulation are important factors in the thermal performance of buildings, but their relative merits should be decided in each building by a strict analysis of the building layout, weather conditions and site condition.

  • This paper deals with the reliability analysis of a complex system with three possibilities at the time of repair. The considered system consists of two subsystems A and Bin series configuration (1-out-of-2: F). Subsystem A has n units which are connected in series whereas subsystem B consists of n units in parallel configuration. The configuration of subsystem A is of 1-out-of-n: F whereas subsystem B is of k-out-of-n: D and k+1-out-of-n: F nature. System has three states: Good, degraded and failed. Supplementary variable technique has been used for mathematical formulation of the model. Laplace transform is being utilized to solve the mathematical equation. Reliability, Availability, M.T.T.F., Busy Period and Cost effectiveness of the system have been computed. The repairs from state $S_7$ to $S_0$, $S_8$ to $S_0$, $S_9$ to $S_0$ and $S_{11}$ to $S_0$ have two types namely exponential and general. Joint probability distribution of repair rate from $S_7$ to $S_0$, $S_8$ to $S_0$, $S_9$ to $S_0$ and $S_{11}$ to $S_0$ is computed by Gumbel-Hougaard family of copula. Some particular cases of the system have also been derived to see the practical importance of the model.

  • Deadbeat property is well established in digital control system design in time domain. But in continuous time system, deadbeat is impossible because of it's ripples between sampling points inspite of designs using the related digital control system design theory. But several researchers suggested delay elements. A delay element is made from the concept of finite Laplace Transform. From some specifications such as internal model stability, physical realizations as well as finite time settling, unknown coefficents and poles in error transfer functions with delay elements can be calulted so as to satisfy these specifications. For the application to the real system, robustness property can be added. In this paper, error transfer function is specified with 1 delay element and robustness condition is considered additionally. As the criterion of the robustness, a weighted sensitive function's $H_{infty}$ norm is used. For the minimum value of the criterion, error transfer function's poles are calculated optimally. In this sense, optimal design of the continuous time deadbeat controller is obtained.

  • Transient response of a crack in a functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) interface layer between two dissimilar homogeneous piezoelectric layers under anti-plane shear is analyzed using integral transform approaches. The properties of the FGPM layer vary continuously along the thickness. Laplace and Fourier transforms are used to reduce the problem to two sets of dual integral equations, which are then expressed to the Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. Numerical values on the dynamic energy release rate (DERR) are presented for the FGPM to show the effects on electric loading, gradient of the material properties, and thickness of the layers. Computed results yield following conclusions: (a) the DERR increases with the increase of the gradient of the material properties of the FGPM layer; (b) certain direction and magnitude of the electric impact loading impedes crack extension; (c) increase of the thickness of the FGPM layer and the homogeneous piezoelectric layer which has larger material properties than those of the crack plane are beneficial to increase of the resistance of transient fracture of the FGPM layer.

  • In mathematics, the concept of convolution is widely used. The convolution operation is required for understanding computer vision and deep learning in artificial intelligence. Therefore, it is vital for this concept to be explained in college mathematics education. In this paper, we present our new teaching and learning materials on convolution available for engineering mathematics. We provide the knowledge and applications on convolution with Python-based code, and introduce Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) used for image classification as an example. These materials can be utilized in class for the teaching of convolution and help students have a good understanding of the related knowledge in artificial intelligence.
