Based on case studies from Japan and South Korea, this review paper explores the hidden costs of English language learning (ELL). In a context where English has become a commodity and ELL a form of consumption, we focus on the personal and social costs of (a) studying abroad as a much-touted path to "native-like" proficiency and (b) sexualization of language teaching materials in order to reach new niche markets. The hidden costs of ELL are embedded in language ideologies which set English up as a magical means of self-transformation and, at the same time, an unattainable goal for most Japanese and Koreans. We end with the call to expose debilitating language ideologies in order to shed light on the hidden costs of ELL.

This study aims to analyze the types of writing tasks in Korean language and literature majors. There are many foreign students in the department of Korean language and literature. It is important to identify the type of task that is the subject of communication when conducting communication activities in an academic context. In particular, writing tasks are among the most important tasks that learners must perform. This is because most of the tasks assigned within the university curriculum are assigned to writing tasks, and evaluation is often done through learner writing. Therefore, this study investigated the types of tasks to be imposed on Korean Language and Literature majors. As a result, summary is the most frequent type of task in the department of Korean language. And in the department of Korean literature, review is most frequent type of task. The results of this study will help to prepare contents for foreign undergraduates of Korean language and literature majors.

This study was designed to investigate the teacher belief related to children literacy between Korea and U.S.A. using the quantitative research. The instrument for this study was constructed with 35 Likert-scaled questions in a survey questionnaire. Additionally, this study found that there existed significant difference with 20 questions between Korea and U.S.A. based on teacher's belief related to children's literacy and relationship between teachers who learns the whole language and the scores of teacher beliefs about literacy in the research. Seventy-six teachers who work at early childhood settings in State College, Bellefonte, Pleasant Gap, and Lemont in Central Pennsylvania participated in U.S.A. and ninety-one teachers who work at early childhood setting in Seoul and Pusan in Korea participated in this survey. This research has provided a framework for investigating the teacher beliefs about teaching literacy in order to discover the whole language effect on the system of teacher beliefs. This study focused on teacher beliefs towards the whole language approach between Korea and U.S.A.

Production and perception of second language sounds are typically influenced by second language learners' native language sounds. In this study we investigate how the Korean language influences Korean speakers' production of English alphabets. In the experiment conducted to prepare for this study 16 native speakers of Korean pronounced English alphabets. Then three native speakers of English evaluated the Korean subjects' pronunciation of them. The results show that the Korean subjects' native language (i.e., Korean) influences their production of the English alphabets. When Korean has sounds corresponding to English alphabets, the English subjects rate the Korean subjects' production of them good. For instance, Korean has voiceless stop phonemes, hence their production of English alphabets was rated good by the English subjects. The Korean subjects' production of English alphabets containing the sounds that do not exist in Korean was rated poor by the English subjects. For instance, Korean does not have voiced fricative phonemes, hence their production of English alphabets was rated poor.

본 연구의 목적은 선교 목적 한국어 교재의 개발 방향성을 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위해 기존에 출판되어 있는 세 권의 선교 목적 한국어 교재를 분석, 평가하였다. 그리고 이 분석의 결과를 바탕으로 앞으로의 선교 목적 한국어 교재의 개발이 어떤 방향으로 이루어져야 하는지 제시하였다. 그 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 일상 언어와 성경적 언어의 균형이 중요하다. 둘째, 선교 대상자의 유형에 따른 차별화된 교재가 출판되어야 한다. 셋째, 한국어 교육 전문가와 기독교 교육 전문가가 협력적으로 개발해야 한다. 넷째, 교재 개발의 전문성이 제고되어야 한다. 다섯째, 교재 개발은 교사 교육과 연계되어야 한다.

In designing and implementing of a distributed system, a programming language which can describe and implement the various interactions between distributed processes in distributed systems is indispensible. High level language constructs such as concurrency. process synchronization between distributed processes and mutually exclusive access to common data could be built in a distributed programming language under the proper support of a language kernel. In this paper, we studied the language constructs a distributed programming language must have and specified the kernel supports necessary in implementing that high level language constructs.

This study investigates the impact of the use of the main local languages in Burkina Faso (Moore, Dioula, Fulfulde) on labor force participation. Using Ethnologue language data, I compute the relative language distance reduction index, after which I use a probit/logit model and instrumental variable approach to account for language use policy endogeneity. This study finds that the use of the Moore language increases the likelihood of labor force participation by 36 percent, with a strong impact on women at 59 percent, nine times higher than men, and 38.3 percent for rural individuals, five times higher than individuals living in urban areas. The Dioula language exhibits comparable trends, while Fulfulde has a negative impact on individuals. The study recommends the use of local language(s) as official language(s) to improve labor force participation. However, a bilingual approach combining local and international language(s) will be of use to account for globalization and international competitiveness. The findings here may be of use to researchers and policymakers as part of their effort to increase the labor force participation rates of women and rural individuals. Moreover, this research has significant implications with regard to the implementation of language use policies in a variety of postcolonial language contexts.

This study aims to discuss the basic foundations to set levels and language skills for developing a Korean Proficiency Test for young and adolescent learners. Recently, there has been an increase in demand regarding young and adolescent learners from multicultural and overseas backgrounds. However, the current Korean Proficiency Test lacks the appropriate means to determine the Korean proficiency of young and adolescent learners with general purposes of language learning. Therefore, there is an urgent need for developing a specialized and new form of language assessment for young and adolescent learners who are exposed to a foreign language or a second language learning environment. The study examines and analyzes cases of foreign language examinations for young & adolescent learners; furthermore, the objectives and target were set based on the results of a needs analysis and in-depth interviews conducted among teachers and education officials in overseas Korean Hangeul Schools, international schools, elementary and secondary schools. Finally, the levels and language skills appropriate for the objectives of a proficiency test and target learners have been suggested.

최근 선천적 청각장애 뿐만 아니라 후천적 요인으로 인해 청각장애를 가지게 되는 사람들도 증가하고 있지만, 수어를 익힐 수 있는 환경은 열악한 상황이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 수어를 배우는 수어 학습자를 위한 수어학습 보조도구로써 수어(지숫자/지문자) 평가 시스템을 제시하고자 한다. 이에 본 논문에서는 OpenCV 라이브러와 MediaPipe를 이용하여 손과 손가락을 추적하여 수어 동작을 인식하고 CNN기법을 이용하여 수어의 의미를 텍스트 형태의 데이터로 변환하여 학습자에게 제공하는 시스템을 연구한다. 이를 통해 수어를 배우는 학습자가 스스로 올바른 수형인지를 판단할 수 있도록 자기주도학습을 가능하게 하여 수어를 익히는데 도움이 되는 수어학습보조 시스템을 개발하고, 청각장애인들의 의사소통의 주언어인 수어학습을 지원하기 위한 방안으로 수어학습보조 시스템을 제안하는 데 목적이 있다.

English textbooks play essential roles in the whole English education context, the analytic study on English textbooks is very important in English education tasks. The purpose of this study is to analyze the expressive functions in the middle school English textbooks on the basis of the 6th national curriculum characteristics and the textbook analysis theories. The results of the expressive language function analysis are as follow: the teaching contents designed for the expressive language functions are not varied, but concentrated on the specific teaching types, and the teaching contents for the expressive language functions are not graded according to the students' development principles stated clearly in the 6th curriculum. The results of the English textbook analysis on the basis of the expressive language function analysis show that the 6th curriculum has some problems in itself and the middle school textbooks do not conform to the 6th curriculum principles. Therefore we need to improve the teaching contents for language functions by means of developing various types of teaching language functions.
