An Ultrathin Polymer Network through Polyion-Complex by Using Sodium Dioctadecyl Sulfate as Monolayer Template

  • Two-dimensionally cross-linked ultrathin films of poly(maleic acid-alt-methyl vinyl ether) (MA-MVE) and poly(allylamine) (PAA) were produced by using sodium dioctadecyl sulfate (2C18S) as the monolayer template for Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) depositio n. The template molecules were subsequently removed by thermal treatment followed by extraction. The polyion-complexed monolayers of three components, i.e., template 2C18S, co-spread PAA, and subphase MA-MVE, were formed at the air-water interface. Their monolayer properties were studied by the surface pressure-area isotherm. The monolayers were transferred on solid substrates as Y type. The polyion-complexed LB films and the resulting network films were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cross-linking to form a polymer network was achieved by amide or imide formation through heat treatment under a vacuum. SEM observation of the film on a porous fluorocarbon membrane filter (pore diameter 0.1 ㎛) showed covering of the pores by four layers in the polyion complex state. Extraction by chloroform followed by heat treatment produced hole defects in the film.

  • In this study, we investigate the optical characteristics of merocyanine dye Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) film using the oscillation characteristics of quartz crystal. As results, the resistance and frequency shift at the parallel resonance under the UV irradiation is to be going down. This behaviour of resistance and frequency is different from the case of general mass adsorption into the organic film on the quartz crystal. Generally the frequency decrease of quartz crystal oscillator, which has been considered as mass loading, goes along with the resistance increase. Thus it has been suggested that the J-aggregate dissociation in merocyanine dye LB film by UV irradiation give rise to transformation of oscillation characteristics of quartz crystal.

  • Poly(1,4-phenylene(1-methoxyenthylene)), organic water soluble PPV precursor was synthesized for polymer electroluminescence(EL) device. To control the molecular array, deposition method of emitter was Langmuir-Blodgett(LB). PPV precursor layer was treated thermally to conversion of PPV. Optical, electrical and EL properties of PPV LB thin film was estimated. Homogeneous light emission of greenish-yellow in PPV LB thin film can be easily confirmed under normal lighting even at low driving voltage. Polymer EL device using PPV LB thin film as emitter materials had a possibility to apply to next generation display device.

  • We studied emitting properties of organic electroluminescent devices fabricated using the spin-coating and Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique. The LB technique has the advantage of precise control of the thickness better than spin-coating method. LB monolayer of poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT) was deposited 27 layers onto the indium-tin-oxide(ITO) substrate as Y-type films by the vertical dipping method. In the absorption spectra, the λ$\_$max/ of P3HT-AA LB films and of spin-coating films showed about at 510, 545 and 590 nm corresponding to 2.43, 2.28, 2.10eV. And we observed that the turn-on voltage of devices deposited by LB method(10V) was higher than that of spin-coating method(8.5V) in voltage-current-luminance characteristic. In the logV-logJ characteristics of ITO/P3HT-AA LB/Al device, we confirmed that El device fabricated by LB method follows three conduction mechanisms: ohmic, space-charge-limited current(SCLC) conduction and trapped-carrier-limited space-charge current(TCLC) conduction.

A Study on the Stability of Langmuir-Blodgett Films Mixed with Myristic Acid and Stearic Acid (미리스트산과 스테아르산 혼합 LB막의 안정성에 관한 연구)

  • We were investigated by cyclic voltammetry to the stability through the electrochemical characteristics of Langmuir-Blodgett films mixed with myristic acid and stearic acid. Fatty acid mixture monolayer LB films was deposited by the LB method on the indium tin oxide(ITO) glass. The electrochemical properties was measured by cyclic voltammetry with a three-electrode system in 0.01 N $NaClO_4$ solution. The measuring range is continuously oxidized to 1650 mV, with an initial potential of -1350 mV was reduced. Scanning rates of 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 mV/s was set. As a result, LB monolayer films of fatty acid mixture was appeared on irreversible processes by the oxidation current from the cyclic voltammogram. Diffusion coefficient (D) of fatty acid mixture was calculated $7.9{\times}10^{-2}cm^2s^{-1}$ at 0.01 N $NaClO_4$ solution.

  • The use of preformed polymers and their cross-linking have been a attempted in order to improve the intrinsic fraqility of monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB)films and to make their technological applications possible. It has shown that an imidization followed a polyion-complexation can stabilize the LB films against heat and solvents. And when the polymer structure was properly designed concurrent removal of the alkyl tails together with imide formation could be accomplished. In this paper we present a characteristic monolayer behavior of polymer with pendent polythers and carboxyls it’s polyion-complexed LB film with subphase polymer PAA and a possible skeletonization of the LB film by thermal imidization. Also deposition status of LB films are evaluated by using QCM

  • Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films of arachic acid and TCNQ(tetracyanoquinodimethane) were prepared in the sample of Al/LB film/Al type where Al are electrodes, and polarization in LB film and dipolar moment of molecules in the films were measured by themally stimulated current(TSC). It is ascertaind in our experiments that dipolar mament of $C_{12}$TCNQ molecule was about 13-15 debye and the moment was directed from the alkyle chain toward TCNQ. Generation of the open circuit voltage was investigated on the z-type and Hetero structure of LB films.

  • This paper describes the electrochemical and photochemical behavior of amphiphilic Os bipyridine compelx adsorbed on SnO$_2$electrodes by the Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) film as monolayer state. Theoretical equation of cyclicvoltammetry for redox species were discussed. And the cyclic voltammogram were simulated taking account theinteraction parameters. From these obtained values, we could fit almost all measured voltammograms with these parameters.

  • For the development of preferable immunosensor and protein chip, the viologen Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) multilayer was fabricated on the surface, and then protein A was adsorbed on the proposed viologen LB film by electrostatic attractive force. The Immunoglobulin G (IgG) labeled with fluorescence marker was self-assembled on the fabricated protein A film. The topographies of the deposited films were investigated by using atomic force microscope (AFM). The immobilization of IgG was verified by fluorescence spectrum. Such structures can be used as sublayers for various kinds of IgG immobilization toward immunosensors and protein chip.

  • The NO$_2$gas-detection characteristics were investigated using the functional organic Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films of Copper-tetra-tert-butylphthalocyanine(CuTBP). The optimum conditions for a film deposition were obtained through a study of $\pi$-A isotherms, and the deposited film status was confirmed by the ellipsometry measurements. It was found that at room temperature there are increments of electrical conductivities by 40 times, 25 seconds of response time and 40 seconds of response time when the films were exposed to the 200ppm NO$_2$gases. We hale observed an increase of the electrical conductivities as the density of NO2 gas increases.
