Characterization of Spironaphthooxazine Derivative Thin Films for Optical Memory

  • The derivatives of spironaphthooxazine gause photoisomerization when they are illuminate with UV light. We investigated the photoisomerization of spironaphthooxazine derivatives for holographic memory. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films contain amphiphile spironaphthooxazine derivatives which can be applied in molecular devices by a change of molecular level energy and a refractive index. In order to investigate the photoisomerization of spironaphthooxazine derivatives at the air/water energy and a refractive index. In order to investigate the photoisomerization of spironaphthooxazine derivatives at the air/water interfaces, spironaphthooxazine derivatives with side alkyl chains were synthesized. The films of the spironaphthooxazine derivatives were characterized by the measurement of UV/vis spectroscopy, Brewster Angle Microscopy (BAM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The monolayers of the spironaphthooxazine derivatives mixed with stearic acid were stable at the air/water interface and visualized by the measurement of BAM. The spironaphthooxazine derivative monolayers on the glass surface showed the maximum efficiency of diffraction as 0.99% by the measurement of holography.

  • We investigated the monolayer behavior at the air-water interface with metal solution, the surface morphologies and the electrical properties such as conductivity, The calculated conductivity values of pure water subphase and its complexes with L $i^{+}$ ions are 5.6$\times$10$^{-l6}$ and 1.9$\times$10$^{-14}$ [S/cm], respectively. And the calculated barrier height D values of pure water subphase and its complexes with Li. ions are 0.70 and 0.66 [eV], respectively. We also attempted to fabricate a crown dendrimer Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films containing functional end group that could form a complex structure with metal ions. Also, we investigated the surface activity of dendrimer films at air-water interface. In AFM images. the larger domains irregularly shaped structures on the top while the smaller ones were free from such defects. In conclusion, it is demonstrated that the metal ion around dendrimer and polymer included crown function group can contribute to make formation of network structure among crown function group and result in change of electrical properties.s.s.

고 진공 (UHV) 조건을 이용하여 구리 나노 분말에 도포한 1-octanethiol 기상 자기조립박막(SAMs)의 두께 조절에 관한 연구

  • Alkanethiol (CH3(CH2)nSH) 자기 조립 박막은 금, 은, 팔라듐 그리고 구리와 같은 금속 물질과 결합하여 산화 방지 보호막, 생화학적 멤브레인 그리고 케미컬 센서로 널리 이용되었다. 전도성을 가진 많은 금속 분말 중에서, 구리는 뛰어난 열, 전기 전도성과 풍부한 양으로 다른 귀금속에 비교하여 경제성까지 갖춘 물질이다. 그러나 이러한 구리 나노 분말은 대기에 노출된 구리 분말이 쉽게 산화된다는 결정적인 단점 때문에 그동안 널리 이용되지 못하였다. 이러한 구리의 단점을 극복하고 뛰어난 전도성의 특징을 이용하고자, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB), layer by layer (LbL), electrophoretic deposition (EPD), self-assembled monolayer (SAM)과 같은 구리 나노 분말 위에 유기 박막을 형성하고자 하는 많은 방법이 시도되어왔다. 이러한 방법들 대부분은 습식 방법으로 진행되었으며, 약 2-nm 두께의 SAM 구조를 형성할 수 있음이 많은 연구를 통하여 확인되었다. 그러나 습식 기반의 SAM 구조는 단지 수일 동안만 유효하며, 이는 코팅을 수행하면서 점차 떨어지는 source solvent의 순도와 적합하지 않은 코팅 조건, 그리고 이러한 원인으로 형성된 부실한 막질 구조 때문으로 추측된다. 게다가 이러한 습식 기반 공정은 코팅 막의 두께 조절과 코팅 시 solvent의 순도를 일정하게 유지하는 것이 매우 복잡하고 어려운 작업으로 알려져 왔다. 본 실험에서는 고 진공 챔버 (< $4.0{\times}10-6$ torr) 시스템을 이용하여 습식 기반 공정의 문제점을 극복하고 구리 나노 분말의 산화를 막기 위한 실험을 진행하였다. 1-octanethiol (CH3(CH2)7SH)은 중간 길이의 hydrocarbon (n=7) 구조를 가진 특징 때문에 코팅 물질로 사용되었다. 게다가, alkanethiol 족 특유의 물질인 황(sulfur)은 구리와 결합하여 산화방지 보호막의 역할을 수행할 수 있다. 저 진공 조건에서는 10-nm의 multilayer가 일괄적으로 코팅됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 실험에서는 약 10-nm 두께의 자기 조립 박막(self assembled monolayers: SAMs)이 고 진공 조건에서 구리 나노 분말 표면 위에 코팅 조건의 변경을 통해서 5-nm에서 10-nm 두께의 1-octanethiol SAMs 구조를 얻어낼 수 있었다. 이는 고 진공 조건에서 1-octanethiol SAMs의 코팅 두께를 조절함으로 다양한 크기의 분말에 코팅 물질로 쓰일 수 있음을 알 수 있다.

Investigation of the orientational changes of monolayer on the water surface by measuring the displacement current. (변위전류 측정에 의한 수면상 단분자막의 배향변화 관찰)

  • Photoisomerization characteristics of 4-octyl-4'-(5-carboxy-pentamethyleneoxy) azobenzene molecules (8A5H) were attained by measurement of absorbtion spectra. 8A5H in chroloform($6.0{\times}10^{-5}[M/l]$) shows trans to cis and cis to trans isomerization by irradiation of lights of 360[nm] and 450[nm] wavelength. From LB monolayer films of 8A5H, also the cis/trans photoisomerization was obtained and it has reversibility and memory characteristics. We are now trying to detect these properties of 8A5H electrically. On this paper, we investigated the structural changes of monolayer on the water surface by measuring the displacement current as a preliminary experiment. The measuring system was constructed at home-made Kuhn type LB(Langmuir-Blodgett) deposition apparatus. 8A5H solution was spreaded at the air-water interface and the currents induced by the dynamic behavior of molecules were measured when the molecules were pressed by barrier. The reversibility of displacement currents by compression and expansion was obtained from 8A5H molecules, which shows the compressed molecules have a tendency to disperse after the compression. From this experiment, we conclude that the behavior of molecules on water surface can be monitored electrically by using this current measuring method, and this method can also be applied to detect the photoisomerization of monolayers on water surface.

pH, Alkaline Earth Metal Ion Effects and Miscibility with Hexadecanol on the Monolayer of Palmitic Acid at the Air-Water Interface (기-액 계면에서 Palmitic Acid 단분자막에 대한 pH, 알칼리토금속 이온의 영향 및 Hexadecanol 분자와의 섞임성)

  • ${\pi}$-A isotherms of the Palmitic acid(PA) with increasing pH shifted to the low area/molecule due to the dissociation of PA at the air-water interface. More condensation of PA monolayers occurred by the addition of Mg$^{2+}$, Ca$^{2+}$ and Ba$^{2+}$ ion in subphase. This condensing effect was increased with increasing the concentration of these ions. Due to the interaction with each ion, PA were formed Mg, Ca, Ba-Palmitate complex. The binding structure between alkaline earth ion and carboxylate ligand in PA has been identified by IR spectrometry. The order of condensing effect of alkaline earth ions at pH 8 was Ca$^{2+}$ > Ba$^{2+}$+ > Mg$^{2+}$. The condensing effect except for Mg$^{2+}$ decreased with increasing atomic number. Whereas, the condensing effect in pure water system decreased with decreasing atomic number in the sequence: Ba$^{2+}$ > Ca$^{2+}$ > Mg$^{2+}$. The miscibility of binary system of PA and hexadecanol in monolayer showed that the miscibility was good for the pure water system. But, in the buffered pH 8 system, bad miscibility was found.
