탑골공원 설계 (Design of Pagoda Park, Seoul)

  • This design proposal was presented to a design competition for renovation of the Pagoda Park, located in Chongro-2ga, Chongro-gu, Seoul, where the first ˝Manse˝ (hurrah) Movement fighting against Japanese colonization, broke out on March 1st, 1919. The park has been considered to be the first modern park in Korea also. The objectives for the design were to make a sacred place to commemorate the 3.1 ˝Manse˝ Movement, to preserve and symbolically memorialize historic remains of the old ˝Wongaksa˝ Temple, an to provide natural and rest areas for citizen. For the space composition, three axes symbolic of, ´freedom and independence´, ´mercy´, and ´nature´, were created. For the freedom and independence axis, exiting facilities, such as statures and monuments related to the 3.1 Movement, were relocated centering around the octagonal pavilion, which was the starting point for the movement, to give order of the site. For the ercy axis, symbols of traditional temple structures, such as, ´Iljugate´-´Pian bridge´-´Chongwang gate´-´Haetal gate´-Pagoda-Buddhist sanctum, were created to symbolize the temple remains and placeness. For the nature axis, tree groves, walking trails, and rest areas for citizen were provided around the site. As a whole the design provided structural orders from secular spaces outside to sacred spaces inside.

조선 왕릉의 경관관리를 위한 통합적 시각구조분석모델 모색방안 (A Study on the Invention of Synthetic Visual Analysis Model for Joseon Royal Tombs)

  • 본 연구는 조선 왕릉의 명확한 공간 및 시각구조특성을 활용하여 그 주변 경관관리를 위해 요청되는 시각구조분석의 최적화 모델개발을 모색한 것으로, 이를 최근의 분석 장비와 기법으로 뒷받침하고자 하였다. 연구 결과 삼차원적 정보모델링인 '스케치업'의 간략화한 자료구축을 통해 이 자료상에서 주요지점과 통경축, 그리고 주변의 저해요소 등을 복합적으로 고려한 연속적 시뮬레이션 기반구축의 선행 실시를 상정하였다. 이후 이들의 경로와 시선방향을 연장하는 좌표 값을 도출하고 이 구간을 헬리캠이 운행하면서 촬영한 실사이미지와 시뮬레이션을 상호 비교함으로서 경관분석과 관리의 효율성이 배가될 수 있음을 제안하였다. 이러한 내용은 그간 소수의 국한된 장소에서 촬영된 이미지를 통해 분석되어온 고정적 지각구조 분석방식의 한계성을 극복할 수 있으며, 시선차단요소들과의 관계성 고찰이 용이한 장점을 보유한다. 아울러 제안된 방식은 주요 시선경로 상의 경관적 변화양상을 포착할 수 있으며, 헬리캠을 이용한 실사 이미지와 스케치업의 가상 이미지 간 호환을 통해 최적화된 장비운영을 가능케 함으로서 분석이후 시간적 변화에 따른 정비계획의 시뮬레이션 자료로서도 용이하게 전환될 수 있다. 상기의 제안은 그간의 조망점, 통경축, 경관관리권역이라는 점, 선, 면, 입체적 환경을 중층적, 연속적, 효율적으로 연계하는 자료로서 기능할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. 본 연구는 조선왕릉과 주변 경관구조 분석방법론 수립에 치중한 까닭에 실천적 점검이 결여된 상태이나 향후 현장에서의 실천과 점검을 통해 기타 문화재의 경관관리에도 응용될 것을 기대한다.

Characteristics of Plant Distribution in the Reclaimed Dredging Area in Gwangyang Bay, Korea

  • In order to elucidate the mechanisms affecting plant distributions in the reclaimed dredging area in the Gwangyang steelworks, in the Gwangyang Bay, Korea, we examined soil characteristics and plant distributions in four study sites and a control site in the study area. Desalination occurring along a gradient with increasing elevation, resulting in decrease of soil pH, EC, P, K, Cl, Ca, Mg, and salt and an increase in soil T-N, silt, clay contents. From site 1 (the lowest-elevation site) to site 5 (the highest-elevation site), halophytes decreased in abundance and nonhalophytes increased. The dominant species in each site were: Phragmites communis, Limonium tetragonum, and 12 additional species at site 1, Carex pumila, Suaeda japonica, and 15 additional species at site 2, Spergularia marina, Scirpus planiculmis, and 22 additional species at site 3, Miscantus sinensis, Lespedeza bicolor, and 26 additional species at site 4 and Pinus thunberii, Rhododendron mucronulatum, and 39 additional species at site 5, which resembled a naturally-occurring P. thinbergii community. Cluster analysis of the vegetation data matrix grouped the 35 plots into 5 major groups, and cluster analysis using the soil environment data matrix revealed 4 major groups. CCA of the floristic and environmental data matrix showed a positive relationship of SAR, EC, Na, Cl, and Ca, which are related to salt, in the $1^{st}$ axis and $2^{nd}$ axis, but negative relationships for altitude, organic contents, silt, and clay contents. Notably, plant species in the reclaimed dredging area that were separated along the $1^{st}$ axis showed strong relationships with factors that related to salt. Long-term exposure to natural rainfall in the reclaimed dredging area changed the soil characteristics, such as salinity. This change in soil characteristics might alter the SAR, which affects plant survival strategies in a given habitat. These results strongly indicated that factors related to salt and elevation play important roles in determining the overall plant distribution in the reclaimed dredging area.

A Study on the Vernacular landscape Pattern of Nagan Walled Town(낙안읍성) in Suncheon

  • Nagan walled town is located on an axis connecting symbolic places, which is a lucky place from the Fengshui point of view because a mountain sits to the rear and a body of water sits to the front. It represents the environmental development of cultural space by blending folk belief, religion, social systems, adminstration facilities and living culture buildings. Therefore, it has a sustainable cultural view connected with a formed or formless religious view and an artificial view (walls, government buildings, living houses, cultivated lands, etc.) in a natural landscape. Environmental design techniques, enlarging the meaning and value of living on a mental level, can be found in the arrangement of space composition and settlement of Nagan walled town. The organised spaces of government and residential areas were constructed within the wall with the view of searching for lucky places (from best, better and good places) in order to construct ecological networks according to the outlooks of space and settlement.

용산 총독관저 정원의 조경사적 의의 (The Yongsan Governor General Official Residence in Korean Landscape Architectural History)

  • 본 연구는 일제강점기에 조영된 용산 총독관저와 그 정원에 관한 연구이다. 네오바로크풍의 건물과 정원이 계획되었는데, 이때 작성된 설계도면은 기존과는 달리 정원에 관한 다양한 정보를 포함하고 있다. 이러한 용산 총독관저 정원설계도면의 해석과 신문기사 관련 문헌을 통한 분석으로 도출한 조경사적 가치는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 용산 총독관저 정원이 근대시기에 조영된 최초의 서양식 정원으로서의 가능성이다. 건물과 함께 정원이 1909년에 완성되어 1911년 조영된 덕수궁 석조전 정원보다 시기적으로 앞선다. 둘째, 당시 근대건축과 함께 도입된 정원 양식과 정원 구성요소를 알 수 있다. 건물의 중심과 정원 진입부의 기념비가 연결된 중심축을 기준으로 정원구성요소가 배치되었는데, 시각적 중심이 되는 비스타(Vista)를 이루는 기념비, 바로크 정원에서 보이는 화단 형태, 축과 대칭으로 배치된 수공간, 화단 형태와 축을 강조한 배식 패턴이 이에 해당한다. 셋째, 서양정원문화의 전파이다. 서양식 문화인 가든파티 형식의 원유회가 열렸으며, 관저에서는 저녁시간대에 만찬과 의전 행사를 진행하였다. 넷째, 근대 조경도면으로의 사료적 가치이다. 도입 수종과 배식 패턴을 구분한 최초의 근대 조경도면으로 기존의 간략한 수목 심벌 또는 화단 형태의 표기에서 진일보한 표현이다. 부차적으로 지형 변형을 위한 현재 표고와 계획고, 수경요소의 배관, 상세 단면 등이 표기되어 있다. 향후 근대조경의 실질적인 분석을 위해서 새로운 사료의 발굴과 분석으로 근대조경에 대한 연구의 폭이 확대되길 바라는 바이다.

경관풍수에 입각한 신도시의 개념적 설계 : 행정중심복합 예정도시를 사례로 (Planning the New City Based on the Geomancy: A Case of the Design of the New Multi-functional Administrative City (NMAC))

  • 경관풍수는 인간, 토지, 물, 산과의 관계를 잘 형상화할 수 있는 친환경적이고도 자연적인 토대에서 도시의 경관과 경관이미지를 설계하는 데 이용될 수 있다. 이 글은 최근 건설예정인 행정중심 복합도시 예정지역을 대상으로 경관풍수와 전통적인 한국의 인간-자연관계를 바탕으로 도시의 개념적 틀을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 즉 도시의 구조와 형태, 도시 내 토지이용 등 다양한 방면에 걸쳐서 도시관련 개념적 틀을 제시하는 것이다. 행정복합 중심도시 건설 예정지는 경관풍수 지리적으로 보면, 평화, 조화를 의미하는 쌍학과 강인함과 상생, 생성, 그리고 성스러운 삼태극의 이미지를 보인다. 이러한 바탕 위에서 서구적인 공간관이라고도 볼 수 있는 중첩된 다이아몬드 구조를 도시구조에 부여함으로써 이러한 전통적 경관풍수적이고도 친자연적인 장소 이미지와 상징성을 지속적으로 유지할 수 있도록 도시의 형태를 계획할 수 있다. 다이아몬드 각각의 두 중심점과 접점에 의하여 이루어지는 세 개의 중심점에 도시의 남북, 동서의 중심축이 형성되고 광장, 행정기관, 시청사가 입지시킬 수 있다. 도시 내 교통망은 방사형 및 직교형으로 건설하고, 중심점 부근에 문화시설을 설치하여 지속 가능한 도시 발전을 위하여 자연보존 지구 등을 남겨놓을 수 있을 것이다.

우정총국주변 시민광장 설계 (The Citizen Plaza Design around the 1st Korean Postal Building, 'Woojeongchongkuk')

  • This paper presents a landscape design for the citizen plaza around the ˝Woojeongchongkuk˝(the 1st Korean postal building) where the ˝Gapsinjeongbyeon˝(1844 coup d´etat) occurred and which was once used as the ˝Jeoneoigam˝(a palace hospital). The site is located in 39 Kyeonji-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and of which area is about 2,013$m^2$. The landscape design goals are to build traditional spaces which fit the traditional buildings and where people feel the old atmosphere; to build interesting spaces where people can learn the post and telegraphic history; and to build nature-friendly green rest spaces in the city. To achieve these goals, symbolic, traditional, educational, historical, and environmentally-friendly concepts are developed. With this concept the space is divided into two axis of the pst and telegraph of Korea. Along the two axis the Postage Stamp ˝Madang˝(yard), the Letter Garden, the Telegraphic ˝Ddeul˝(garden), the Communication Plaza, and the ˝Jeoneoigam˝(old palace hospital) and the ˝Gapsinjeongbyeon˝(1884 coup d´etat) Memorial Place are arranged. The Postal Stamp Madang which symbolizes the first Korean postage stamp is a space for studying history and evolution of stamps in Korea. The Letter Garden which symbolizes and formalizes a letter paper is composed with white bamboo trees which are planted linearly and long granite benches on which famous letters are carved. In the Telegraphic Ddeul which symbolizes the telegraph, the history of the telegraphic instrument and the telephone is exhibited. In the Communication Plaze which symbolizes future post and telegraph service extending to the world, the images of satellite communication, internet, webmail etc. are exhibited. The Jeoneoigan, and the Gapsinjeongbyeon Memorial Place is for memorializing the historic place and events. Throughout the whole place, various models and ceramic picture tiles about the post and telegraph and exhibited for effective education. In conclusion, sustainable management schemes for the site are suggested.

철도시설과 연계한 이리 도시구조와 도시경관의 근대성 해석 (A Study on the Interpretation of Modern Urban Structure and Urban Landscape of Iri(Iksan) in Connection with Railway)

  • Modern railway construction by Japanese had a great influence on the urbanization, transformation of urban structure and landscape during the Japanese imperialism and compressive increasing period in Iri(Iksan). This paper aims to find out the effect of railway on the modern urban structure and urban landscape in Iri(Iksan). Railways in Iri, Honam railway, Kunsan railway, Jeonla railway have been constructed progressively during 1911 and 1915 with Iri and old Iri(east-Iri) station. From the analysis of land registration maps and street plans, old photographies and historical records, some significant features underling railway construction can be followed in view of modern urbanization process in Iri. Firstly railways cut off the possibility of developing urban structure based on traditional spatial structure of Iksan. Secondly railways made dual spatial structure in Iri. Japanese and Korean life zone were divided into separate district around urbanization area and market place. Thirdly traditional space cognition system based on four cardinal directions were changed to front and rear space of railway station. Fourthly railways and stations caused neo-baroque spatial order and imperialistic urban landscape of Iri with axis, vista and gridiron plan. Fifthly break points and fringe belts garbling modern urbanization process are created. Sixthly modern cultural and consumptive urban spaces were taken their seats in relation with daily urban life.

상생지원(相生池苑) 기본계획 (A Landscape Design of Sangsaengjiwon)

  • The purpose of this plan was to introduce the imaginary environment concept to modem environment design which was drawn by comparison of historic and cultural landscape. An area of $19,056m^2$ in I1-ja mountain water reservoir, located in 94 Dun-Chon-Dong, Gangdong-Gu, Seoul was selected for this planning. The concepts of Barrier-Free Design and Universal Design were introduced in order to accept the demands of various social classes. Based on the results of natural and cultural environment, Animism, Heaven, Earth and Man Theory and Yin-Yang and the Five Elements Theory these concepts were introduced for the philosophical background. Concept planning, topic selection, space planning and axis establishment were conducted during the framework step of the plan. Circulation planning, planting planning, facility and pavement planning, and light planning were conducted during the initial planning step. Lastly, detailed designing was performed for the major spaces. In addition, the imaginary environment concept was applied, ranging from the structural aspect of the space to designing factors of the facility in order to achieve placeness and practicality. In conclusion, this may be the first case design applying the imaginary environment concept to the environmental design with natural environment factors such as animals, plants, terrains and climate, and cultural such as cities, places, time, thoughts and symbols which are all factors to be considered in the existing environment design.
