  • Evapotranspiration mapping using both meteorological ground-based measurements and satellite-derived information has been widely studied during the last few decades and various methods have been developed for this purpose. It is significant and necessary to estimate regional evapotranspiration (ET) distribution in the hydrology and water resource research. The study focused on analyzing the surface ET of Chungbuk region using Landsat 7 ETM imagery. For this process, we estimated the regional daily evapotranspiration on May 8, 2000. The estimation of surface evapotranspiration is based on the relationship between Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) and Morton's actual ET. TVDI is the relational expression between Normalized Difference of Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST). The distribution of NDVI corresponds well with that of land-use/land cover in Chungbuk. The LST of several part of city in Chungbuk region is higher in comparison with the averaged LST. And TVDI corresponds too well with that of land cover/land use in Chungbuk region. The low evapotranspiration availability is distinguished over the large city like Cheongju-si, Chungju-si and the difference of evapotranspiration availability on forest and paddy is high.

  • On May 31, 2003. Landsat 7 experienced an anomaly causing the Scan Line Corrector(SLC) to stop functioning normally. The SLC-off causes individual scan lines to alternately overlap and then leave large gaps at the edge of the Image. A many scientists with ongoing experience using ETM+ data evaluated the scientific usability and validity of Landsat 7 products containing the SLC anomaly The best reference scene for gap-filling is the other SLC-on Landsat scene that provide same resolution, few changes, and similar data acquisition. But receiving of Landsat imagery is not stable in Korea. So SPOT image can be another alternative solution because it is a steady-state multispectral satellite image as Landsat image. In this study, we filled the SLC-off gap s of 2, 3, 4 bands using SPOT image by a local regression technique, and assigned the optimum spectral value to gaps of 1, 5, 7 bands based on a spectral adjacency. Through this process, we could restore Landsat SLC-off image and evaluated the accuracy of the results.

  • Chlorophyll-a concentration maps of Yongdam reservoir in September and October, 2001 were produced using Landsat ETM imagery and the in-situ water quality measurement data. In-situ water samples were collected on 16th September and 18th October during the satellite overpass. The correlations between the DN values of the imagery and the values of chlorophyll-a concentration were analyzed. The visible bands(band 1, 2, 3) and the near infrared band(band 4) data of September image showed the correlation coefficient values higher than 0.9. The October image showed correlation coefficient values of about 0.7 due to the low variations of chlorophyll-a concentration. Regression models between the DN values of the Landsat ETM image and the chlorophyll-a concentration have been developed for each image. The developed regression models were then applied to each image, and finally the chlorophyll-a distribution maps of Yongdam reservoir were produced. The produced maps showed the spatial distribution of the chlorophyll-a in Yongdam reservoir in a synoptic way so that the tropic state could be easily monitored and analysed in the spatial domain.

  • Because the satellite imagery can detect the radiative heat from the surface using the thermal IR (TIR) channel, there have been many efforts to verify the relationship between the land surface temperature (LST) and urban heat island. However, the relationship between geomorphological characteristics like surface aspects and LST is relatively less studied. Therefore, the geomorphological elements, for example, surface aspects and surface slopes, are considered to evaluate their effects on the change of the surface temperature distribution using the Landsat 7 ETM+ TIR channel and the possibility of the image to detect anthropogenic heat from the surface. We found that the surface aspect is ignorable but the surface slope with the sun elevation influences on the surface temperature distribution. Also, the radiative heat from the surface to the atmosphere could not be accurately recorded by the satellite image due to the surface slope but the slope correction process used in this study could correct the surface temperature under slope condition and the slope correction, in fact, was not influenced on the average temperature of the surface. The possibility of the anthropogenic heat detection from the surface from the satellite imagery was verified as well.

  • Impervious surface is an important index for the estimation of urbanization and the assessment of environmental change. In addition, impervious surface influences on short-term rainfall-runoff model during rainy season in hydrology. Recently, the necessity of impervious surface estimation is increased because the effect of impervious surface is increased by rapid urbanization. In this study, impervious surface estimation is performed by using remote sensing image such as Landsat-7 ETM+image with $30m{\times}30m$ spatial resolution and satellite image with $1m{\times}1m$ spatial resolution based on Jungnangcheon basin. A tasseled cap transformation and NDVI(normalized difference vegetation index) transformation are applied to Landsat-7 ETM+ image to collect various predict variables. Moreover, the training data sets are collected by overlaying between Landsat-7 ETM+ image and satellite image, and CART(classification and regression tree) is applied to the training data sets. As a result, impervious surface prediction model is consisted and the impervious surface map is generated for Jungnangcheon basin.

  • In this study, the estimation of the temperature distribution of Jeju Island with coastal ocean derived from the thermal band of Landsat 7/ETM+ of January 6, 2003 was carried out. For the computation of the temperature of the island and the coastal ocean based on the thermal band, we used NASA method wiich is the 8 bit Digital Number(DN) converted into spectral radiance. The computed results showed that the land temperature variations were from 0 to 12 Celsius degrees, and a good agreement with the observation ones based on the method. However, the ocean surface temperature was not much changed ground 15 degree since the water was well mixed between the coastal and the offshore ocean. The interesting results were that the temperature distributions of the southern part(Seogwipo City) of Jeju Island were higher than those of the north one(Jeju City) by more than 2 Celsius degree at the same height although the distance between the Jeju and the Seogwipo is only about 35km in winter season. The reason was found that the solar irradiance intensity of the south part was stronger than the north one by Halla mountain in winter season only. From the results, we found that the seasonal variations of solar irradiation and the height of Mt. Halla were an important role of temperature distribution of Jeju Island.

  • The increasing demand for monitoring wildfires and their impact on the land surface have prompted studies of burned area extraction and analysis. To differentiate burned and unburned area, the earlier method of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) Burned Area Detection Algorithm was proposed to estimate the change in land surface based on the reflectance energy. The energy, whose wavelengths are sensitive to burning, was selected to calculate the change parameter $Z_{score}$. This method was applied using the MODIS images to produce a MODIS Burned Area product. The approach was to simplify this algorithm to make it compatible with the Landsat 7 ETM+ SLC-off images. To extract the refined version of burned regions, post-processing was carried out by applying a median filter, dilation morphology algorithm, and finally a gap filling method. The experimental results showed that the detailed burned areas extracted from the proposed method exhibited more spatial details than those of the MODIS Burned products in the large U.S areas. The results also revealed the discontinuous distribution of burned regions in Vietnam forests.

  • Thermal infrared images of Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-7 ETM+ sensors have been unrivalled sources of high resolution thermal remote sensing (60m for ETM+, 120m for TM) for more than two decades. Atmospheric effect that degrades the accuracy of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) measurement significantly, however, can not be corrected as the sensors have only one thermal channel. Recently, MODIS sensor onboard Terra satellite is equipped with dual-thermal channels (31 and 32) of which the difference of at-satellite brightness temperature can provide atmospheric correction with 1km resolution. In this study we corrected the atmospheric effect of Landsat SST by using MODIS data obtained almost simultaneously. As a case study, we produced the Landsat SST near the eastern and western coast of Korea. Then we have obtained Terra/MODIS image of the same area taken approximately 30 minutes later. Atmospheric correction term was calculated by the difference between the MODIS SST (Level 2) and the SST calculated from a single channel (31 of Level 1B). This term with 1km resolution was used for Landsat SST atmospheric correction. Comparison of in situ SST measurements and the corrected Landsat SSTs has shown a significant improvement in $R^2$ from 0.6229 to 0.7779. It is shown that the combination of the high resolution Landsat SST and the Terra/MODIS atmospheric correction can be a routine data production scheme for the thermal remote sensing of ocean.

  • Field survey research on damages caused by volcanic activities has plenty of difficulties due to human resources, safety and costs issues. Remote sensing application using satellite image is one of very useful tools to overcome those issues. In this study, we monitored the volcanic activities of Sinabung volcano in 2010, which is located in Sumatra island, Indonesia by using Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite images acquired on 17 April, 2009 and 30 July, 2012. We found that the area of pyroclastic flow inundation after 2010 has been tripled roughly, since extracting the pyroclastic flow inundation before and after 2010 eruption from classification. The result from modeling of pyroclastic flow inundation has been compared with the extracted pyroclastic flow inundation from Landsat 7 ETM+ images. As a result, we confirmed that the length of inundation area from the modeling was calculated to 92% accurate, but the width of inundation area was somewhat imprecisely estimated in the volcanic area having the sharp slope and only calculated to 17% accurate.
