  • As the natural aggregates such as sand and clay are getting exhausted, the quantity of utilizing geosynthetics is being increased in the solid waste landfill. Especially, the waste landfills have been constructed at the gorge in the mountainous area and reclaimed land from the sea in the Korean Peninsula. Those areas are not favorable for construction of waste landfill in geotechnical engineering aspect. In this study, the frictional characteristics of geosynthetics that used in the waste landfill were estimated. Then, the studies of the behavior of geosynthetics and stability of LDCRS (Leachate Detection, Collection, and Removal System) of side slope were conducted in the waste landfill by means of the pilot test, and numerical analysis. Geocomposite which is combined type or separated type is influenced on the strain itself, and also implicated in the stress and strain of geomembrane at the lower layer. The strain on the combined type of geocomposite is about 50% smaller than that of the separated type at the side slope. The lateral displacement and settlement of top at the slope with the separated type are three times greater than that of the combined type. In the numerical analysis, discontinuous plans in between ground and geosynthetic, geosynthetic and geosynthetic, goesynthetic and waste have been modeled with the interface element. The results gave a good agreement with the field large-scale model test. The relative displacements of geosynthetics were also investigated and hence the interface modeling of liner system is appropriate for analysis of geosynthetics liner system in the waste landfill.

  • In this paper, the effect of ground improvement and the countermeasure for the increase of strength in soft ground (wasted fill, marine clay) was studied through utilization of Soilcrete Cement as a material of ground improvement. Soil samples were obtained from $\bigcirc$$\bigcirc$$\bigcirc$ sanitary landfill to assess the applicability of the clay liner using Soilcrete Cement. Several laboratory tests were performed with the samples and skin corrosion tests of steel pipe covered with Soilcrete Cement were performed. As a result, Soilcrete Cement is considered to be applicable to the construction site and to be effective for the prevention of the corrosion of the steel pipe.

  • The experimental investigations considered in this paper are similar in many respects to those of Lee$^1$, with some key differences. First, there is no layering of the soils in a heterogeneous liner. The only soil investigated is the clay component of the cover liner. This ensures that the clay is exposed to freezing and that frost propagation in the clay can be investigated separate from other processes. Second, a closed system approach to the simulation was adopted. According to Jones$^2$, closed-system freezing occurs when there is no source of water available beyond that originally present in the soil voids. Freezing under such conditions results in very thin or non-existent ice lenses. One of tile objectives of the experiments described in this paper was the moisture migration and the changing of moisture contents of the compacted clay liner in landfill. The closed-system was used to limit tile variables in the experimental simulation to make these calculations more direct, although the final results could be applied to an open system also. As a result, the moisture content decreased about 45%-46% after two freeze/thaw cycles.

  • In this study, to examine the applicability of the lime sludge as a landfill liner, 1) the geoechnical characteristics of sludge, 2) the characteristics of migrations of contaminants, and 3) the characteristic of leaching in the batch leaching test are investigated As a result, the hydraulic conductivity(K) of the lime sludge was found out to have 10 times lower hydraulic conductivity than the maximum allowable hydraulic conductivity of the liner Retardations of heavy metals(Cu, Pb) were found out to be higher than that of organic(phenol) due to the high pH(>11.0) of 4he lime sludge. As a result of the leaching test. the concentrations of Pb and Cu were found to be close to allowable limitation, so that they need to be kept in constant watch.

  • Leachate generated from landfill material flows through soil gravitationally downward and. continues to flow until it encounters groundwater, posing the thread of pollution. So selection of liner material having a low permeability and testing method are required. The study was performed to find bentonite content of soil-bentonite mixtures for using as liner and cover of waste landfills. This paper includes results of consolidation tests and permeability tests and evaluates suitability and properties of soil-bentonite mixtures as impervious materials.

  • When microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi are injected into porous medium such as soils along with appropriate substrate and nutrients, biomass retained in the soil pore. Soil pore size and shape are varied from the initial condition as a result of biofilm formation, which make hydraulic conductivity reduced. In this research, hydraulic conductivity reduction was measured after microorganism are inoculated and cultured with synthetic substrates and nutrients. Biomass-soil mixture was evaluated its applicability to the field condition as an alternative liner material in landfill by measuring hydraulic conductivity change after repetitive freeze-thaw cycles.

  • To identify the effect of landfill waste for groundwater and unsaturated air environment, soil gas survey and hydrogeochemical study were executed. The geology of the study area is granite and aquifer is mainly composed of sandy soil. The results of spatial distribution from soil gas showed the boundary of buried waste and processes and degree of waste decomposition. Groundwater contamination by leachate from landfill is controlled by groundwater flow attributed by the original topography and liner.

  • The chemical compatibility of leachate with the two natural materials was analyzed by performing the hydraulic conductivity test. The selected liner materials were natural marine clay and weathered soil sampled from Kimpo wastefill and Daehwa Dong, Kyonggi Do, respectively. PARAFIX, which is mainly composed of paraffin, cement, stearic acid, PVA etc., was used as solidifying agent. The chemical solutions used in the test were 10% acetic acid, 10% methanol, and real leachate from Kimpo wastefill and the results of tests were compared with that of distilled water. The results of tests show that hydraulic conductivity of solidified clay was increased slightly with permeation of acetic acid, methanol and the increase of hydraulic conductivity was not shown with permeation of leachate, distilled water and in case of weathered soil. Based on the tests, it is ascertained that the tested liner materials can be stable with the solution of low concentration.

  • In this paper, a new optimized design methodology is proposed. It integrates the discrete element method (DEM) and real-coded genetic algorithm for the design of landfill lining system subjected to equipment loadings. In applying the design method to a tapered lining system, the effect of the taperness, which means the change of shape for cover soil, is examined. The optimization problem to maximize the capacity of a waste-containment facility is solved using real coded genetic algorithm. Numerical example analysis is carried out for a typical landfill slope structure.

  • In this paper, the retardation capacity of marine clay and weathered soil of seashore waste landfill is analyzed by using a laboratory column apparatus for organic and inorganic components which can represent the components of the leachate of municipal waste landfill. The results show that sorption capacity marine clay for potassium is larger than that of weathered soil. Lead and cadmium are adsorbed completely at concentrations higher than the real concentrations developed in the landfill. The bottom soils of seashore landfill can also retard some nondegradable components of organics although their sorption capacities for organics were less than those for inorganics.
