Open dump causes groundwater and soil contamination by leachate, air pollution by LFG (Landfill Gas). In this paper, in order to improve landfill researches which have been done about reduction of high leachate level and LFG collection in the Kimpo landfill separately, the effect of simultaneous flowing of leachate and LFG has been Studied. The HYLGS (Hanyang Leachate Gas Simulator) used in this study is a 3D, 2-phase, transient FDM model which can be applied to venting trenches in a landfill. From present numerical analysis it can be concluded that all the pressures of the Kimpo landfill grid system are almost the same and their maximum value in the center grid block of the system is approximately 26 m $H_2O$ (2.52 atm), that because the pressures of venting trench layer situated in the middle of the landfill have the lowest values and equal with air pressure, the venting trenches play an important role in landfill stabilization, that the flow of gas will be more difficult as time goes by owing to the increase of LGR(Leachate and gas ratio).
The objective of this study was to invetigate the coagulation effects of landfill leachate by using Acid Mine Drainage(AND). The coagulation efficiency was investigated by mixing landfill leachate with F $e^{+3}$ solution earned by oxidation of pyrite(AMD). In the results of this experiment, it was found that the amount of removed COD and SS was approximately 30% respectively by mixing at the ratio of AMD three to leachate one. And it showed highest turbidity removal efficiency at all mixing ratio. Concentration of Fe was decreased with increasing mixing ratio, however it was increased inversely at mixing ratio 4. Optimal mixing ratio was 3 at the results obtained by leachate coagulation experiments. Also removal efficiency at mixing ratio 3 corresponded to 500mg/$\ell$ of FeC $l_3$ dosage. it was suggested that pretreatment by mixing of AMD and leachate remove both suspended organic material of leachate and metal of AMD.
Analysis of long term affecting factors on water quality items of gas emission form (BOD, COD) and leachate emission form (T-N, non-bio-degradable COD (NBDCOD)) was performed for the SUDOKWON 1st Landfill Site (LS1) and 2nd Landfill Site (LS2). As landfill gas was generated, BOD and COD decreased from 6,887 and 20,025 mg/L in 1993 to 49.5 and 670.2 mg/L in 2019, respectively. TN and NBDCOD increased with waste decomposition but gradually decreased after landfill closure because of the precipitation infiltration effect. Due to the drastic decline of carbon in the leachate, the BOD/TN ratios of LS1 and LS2 declined from 13.0 and 17.0 during early stage of the landfill to 0.07 and 0.16 in 2019, respectively; LS2 and NBDCOD/COD increased from 0.25 to 0.65 during the same period. These conditions caused carbon deficiency in denitrification treatment and a chemical post-treatment request for NBDCOD. The different behaviors of gas emission and leachate emission items suggest the necessity of different strategic approaches in the long term perspective.
Leachate from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill, effluent from leachate treatment plant, and ground water sample from a monitoring well near landfill site were tested for an acute toxicity. Microtox toxicity test was used for testing the acute toxicity of leachate and other samples. EC$_{50}$ values which a concentration of pollutant for reducing 50% light output from luminescent bacteria, Photobacterium phosphoreum were determined to assess the toxicity of pollutants as well as the relative toxicity. In addition, characteristics of leachate were studied and compared to those of phenol and pentachlorophenol (PCP) which are typical aquatic toxic pollutants. For leachate, EC$_{50}$ for 30 min incubation was 10.8%, while for phenol and PCP, 46 ppm and 1.2 ppm, respectively. the relative toxicity of treated leachate by in situ aeration with activated sludge was reduced to more than 75% of toxicity of the untreated leachate. Microtox toxicity test was failed to figure out EC$_{50}$ values for groundwater from a monitoring well since the relative toxicity of the unconcentrated sample was too low to estimate EC$_{50}$. Addition of activated carbon to leachate was reduced the relative toxicity. The reduction Pattern of the relative toxicity of leachate by mechanical aeration was similar to that of PCP, but different from that of phenol. These findings suggest that the toxicity of leachate may come from PCP-like toxic compounds rather than phenol-like one. In conclusion, the process of aeration with activated sludge might be very important to reduce the environmental toxicity of leachate. And Microtox test could be a reasonable bioassay for screening and monitoring the environmental toxicity of leachate from municipal solid waste landfill as well as for determining the reduction efficiency of the leachate toxicity by various treatment processes in leachate treatment plant.
Pollution characteristics of leachate and underground soul of the two landfill states were Investigated Domestic wastes were dumped In the two adjacent landfill states. Only small portion of S landifill site was filled with domestic wastes at the first stage of dumping, and most portion of the site was filled with construction wastes. However Y landfill strate was filed with mostly domestic wastes. Higher concentrations of organic pollutants including VOCs were measured In Y landfill site leachate than In S tendon site. Underground souls of the two linam states were analyzed by the two kinds of leaching methods, KEP (Korean Extraction Processl and Acid Digestion. Underground souls of the both landfill states were not polluted by leachates. Underground soils of the two were composed of firie salty material. Thus It Is fecund that fine silty soul layer of the sea shore may be used as a landfillsite.
Analysis of hydrological safety as well as the determination of many substance concentrations are necessary when bioreactor systems are introduced to landfill operations. Therefore, hydrological and substance balance model was developed since it can be applied to various bioreactor landfill operation systems. For the final evaluation of the model's effectiveness, four different methods of injections (leachate alone, leachate and organic waste water, leachate and reverse osmosis concentrate, and all the above three combination) was applied to 1st landfill site of Sudokwon landfill. As a result, the water content of the hypothetical cases for four different systematic bioreactors is projected to be increased up to 35.5% in next 10 years, and this indicated that there will be no problems in meeting the hydrological safety. Also, the final $Cl^-$ concentration after 10-yr time period was projected to be between from minimum 126 to maximum 3,238 mg/L, which could be still a decrease from the original value of 3,278 mg/L. According to the proposed model, whether the substance concentration becomes increased or decreased largely depends on the ratio of initial quantity of inner landfill leachate and the rate of injection.
In order to treat leachate from aged landfill site effectively, removal of biologically recalcitrant organic matter and denitrification efficiency were evaluated through the combination of $H_2O_2/O_3$ AOP pretreatment process and UASB process. The results can be summarized as follows. In case of leachate having low COD/N ratio from aged landfill site, it is possible to increase available COD for denitrification in nitrate utilizing denitrification and nitrite utilizing denitrification both by enhancing biodegradability of recalcitrant organic matter as applying $H_2O_2/O_3$ AOP to pretreatment process. In this experiment, it is found that available COD for denitrification can be increased to 1.0 and 0.4 g/day, respectively. Comparison has been made between requiring COD and available COD for denitrification in each experimental stages. It is expected that high rate of denitrification can be achieved with leachate from young landfill site because higher amount of available COD for denotrification is present in the leachate than the amount of requiring COD for denitrification. Especially, In leachate from aged landfill site with low COD/N ratio, it can be concluded that denitrification using nitrite nitrogen can enhance overall denitrification performance efficiently because denitrification using nitrite nitrogen requires less amount of carbon source than denitrification using nitrate nitrogen. Comparing the biogas production rate and nitrogen content of biogas under the condition of same amount of nitrate and nitrite addition, biogas production and nitrogen content of biogas are increased during denitrification after $H_2O_2/O_3$ AOP pretreatment process. Therefore, it can be confirmed that COD/N ratio in the leachate is increased. Applying $H_2O_2/O_3$ AOP as pretreatment system of landfill leachate seems to have little economic benefit because it requires additional carbon source to denitrify ammonia nitrogen in leachate coming from aged landfill site. However, it is possible to apply this pretreatment process to leachate from old landfill site in view of AOP process can achieve removal of biologically recalcitrant organic matter and increase of available COD for denitrification simultaneously.

A geophysical and geochemical study was performed to verify the depth of landfill as well as the horizontal/vertical distribution of leachate at the landfill site located in Gongju. The electrical resistivity, with dipole-dipole array and dipole spacing of 5m, was applied along the nine survey lines and electromagnetic induction survey was conducted along the perimeter traverse surrounding the landfill. Cations, anions and stable isotope ($\delta$D and $\delta$$^{18}$ O) analyses were performed on about 63 water and leachate samples collected in dry and rainy seasons at 31 sites. The result of electromagnetic induction survey make it possible to derive the potential route of leachate in the past or present. The imaging of processed resistivity field data show that the possible route of leachate doesn't exist except the survey line 7. The weak zone traversing the landfill, however, is revealed by the electrical resistivity imaging, which may be the potential route of leachate toward the deep ground. The geochemical data agree well with geophysical data for deducing possible route of leachate of the site.

Until 1993, Nanji landfill has been the main solid waste treatment facility for Seoul, which is the capital of Korea. Since the landfill has not been properly lined, soil and ground water around the landfill has been contaminated. Due to the proximity, it has been speculated that the water quality of the Han River would have been also influenced by the leachate. In order to illuminate this, HELP model to estimate the quantity of the leachate from Nanji landfill and RMA model to simulate the change of water quality in Han River were applied in this research. The result indicates that the quantity of leachate from Nanji landfill has been overestimated by previous works and it was due to the failure to consider the water storage capacity of the landfill. The effect from Nanji landfill leachate on the water quality, in terms of COD input, proves to be smaller than those from other tributaries and influents to the River and the effect is larger when the flow of the River is reversed due to the tide.
The purpose of this study is to predict appropriate leachate rates and leachate transport velocity through weathered zone and basement rock on the transient condition at Nanji waste landfill. The leachate transport in the Nanji waste landfill is analyzed using MODFLOW(A Modular 3-D Finite Different Groundwater Flow Model) model which simulates three dimension groundwater flow and MT3D(A Modular Three Dimentional Transport Model) model which describes three dimensional transport for advection, dispersion and chemical reaction of dissolved constituents in groundwater system on the transient condition. Leachate production rates are estimated by HELP(Hydraulical Evaluation of Landfill Performance) model and used weather records for recent 10 years. Leachate transport is predicted by a change of leachate level to after/before established HDPE, established slurry wall and wells.
