  • This study is proposing a System Dynamics Model for estimating Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission from treating Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in South Korea for years 2000 to 2030. The government of country decided to decrease the total GHG emission from waste sector in 2030 as per Business-as-usual level. In context, four scenarios are generated to predict GHG emission from treating the MSW with three processes i.e., landfill, incineration and recycling. For prior step, MSW generation rate is projected for present and future case using population and waste generation per capita data. It is found that population and total MSW are directly correlated. The total population will increase to 56.27 million and total MSW will be 21.59 million tons in 2030. The methods for estimating GHG emission from landfill, incineration and recycling are adopted from IPCC, 2006 guidelines. The study indicates that Scenario 2 is best to adopt for decreasing the total GHG emission in future where recycling waste is increased to 75% and landfill waste is decreased to 7.6%. Lastly, it is concluded that choosing proper method for treating the MSW in country can result into savings of GHG emission.

  • The purpose of this study is to quantify volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in gas sample using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled to GC analysis. The optimal HS-SPME conditions was CAR/PDMS fiber and 30 min absorprion time for the analysis of various VOCs. In optimal conditions, 80 VOCs could be detected within 1 ppbv and even less than 0.0005 ppbv especially in the case of BTEX. However, fiber reproducibility on adsorption efficiency was 1~9.2% (between the same fiber) and 5.9~13.5% (between the other fiber). We successfully determined 35 VOCs in landfill gas with this method and found that VOCs of high concentration are emitting from vent pipe of closed/open landfill site under the HS-SPME conditions. This method may apply to VOCs/odor determination from various atmospheric environmental samples as well as landfills.

  • Genenrally, biogas contained methane contents of $40-75\%$, was made in anaerobic compost facilities, landfill site, etc. And it is very useful for gas engine as a fuel. So, many imported biogas engines for electrical generation, are installed and operating now at landfill sites and anaerobic compost facilites. And KIMM has studied on and developed biogas engines with the aids of engine maker and parts companies for several years. Some results are shown here.

  • The most general treatment method of municipal solid waste is a landfill. The LFG (landfill gas) migration is a serious problem in environmental aspect. The object of this study is to present the possibility of LFG utilization as a replacement or supplementary fuel for local energy -demand. We have developed the EXCEL program for the economic analysis.

  • Fundamental combustion characteristics, such as the combustion potential, burning velocity and flame stability, for the practical utilization of LFG(Landfill gas) and LFG-blended fuels were experimentally investigated. The combustion potentials(CP) of LFG-blended fuels calculated from the previously suggested formulae were compared with burning velocities obtained by present experiments. The results showed that the previous formulae fur CP of LFG-blended fuels were not agreed with the experimental burning velocity, and these formulae should be revised. To provide an useful information needed to design the combustion devices, a triangular diagram was suggested for the maximum burning velocity of the mixture of CH$_4$, LPG and LFG. From the investigation of the burning velocity and the flame stability in a practical combustor, it was noted that the LFG-blended fuels, of which heating values or Wobbe indices were adjusted to that of natural gas, could be used as an alternative fuel of natural gas.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate selective adsorption of $CO_2$ from LFG (Landfill gas) by using commercialized NaX-type zeolite adsorbent under the ambient temperature and pressure. The experiment of $CO_2$ adsorption was carried out by using simulated LFG. The $CO_2$ adsorption capacity and separation efficiency of NaX-type adsorbent were investigated by analyzing gas flow rate and gas composition at inlet and outlet of the adsorption reactor. The adsorbed $CO_2$ were desorbed under decompression condition which 0.5 Torr or by air purge. Through the result to use simulated LFG, when the method of VSA was used, 73.2~75.3 mg of $CO_2$ was adsorbed per 1 g commercial adsorbent, when the method of air purge was used, 78.4~83.2 mg of $CO_2$ was adsorbed per 1 g of commercial adsorbent.

  • This study presents a relationship between gas quantity and measurement resistance using the bubble meter, the water head indicator and the rotor meter from the gas vent sanitary landfill. From the one-dimensional analyses and experiments, the below results have been obtained. The gas volume sourcing from the gas vent depends on the permeability of final cover soil, its cover depth and distance between the gas vents. The total gas volume producing in the interested domain may be accurately measured by the bubble meter, the water head indicator and the rotor meter if the clay is used for the final cover soil. The required times approaching to the steady-state are different with respect to the flow meters, one day is for the bubble meter and the water head indicator and one hour for the rotor meter.

  • In this study, we measured the concentration of VOCs in ambient air and landfill gas (LFG) in a midsize municipal landfill site. The LFG flux values of VOCs were computed using a total of fifteen VOCs determined by GC-PID system. To understand relative contribution of these 15 VOCs to the total carbon budget, their concentration and flux estimates were compared to those of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC) measured concurrently. It was also found that there were systematic differences in absolute VOC concentration levels between LFG and air samples above landfill surface. The VOC concentrations in LFG samples were high enough to reach above a few tens of ppm that are 10 to 100 times higher than those in air above landfill surface. If the LFG flux values were computed using the LFG concentration data of 15 VOCs and NMHC with exit ventilation speed, the magnitude of emissions in the study area is estimated to be 8.6 and 103 ton C/yr, respectively. In the meantime, large fraction of those speciated VOC emissions is accounted for by BTEX.

  • Bio energy development by using Low Calorific Gas Turbine(LCGT) has been developed for New & Renewable energy source for next generation power system, low fuel and operating cost method by using the renewable energy source in landfill gas (LFG), Food Waste, water waste and Livestock biogas. Low calorific fuel purification by pretreatment system and carbon dioxide fixation by green house system are very important design target for evaluate optimum applications for bio energy. Main problems and accidents of Low Calorific Gas Turbine system was derived from bio fuel condition such as hydro sulfide concentration, siloxane level, moisture concentration and so on. Even if the quality of the bio fuel is not better than natural gas, LCGT system has the various fuel range and environmental friendly power system. The mechanical characterisitics of LCGT system is a high total efficiency (>70%), wide range of output power (30kW - 30MW class) and very clean emmission from power system (low NOx). Also, we can use co-generation system. A green house designed for four different carbon dioxide concentration from ambient air to 2000 ppm by utilizing the exhaust gas and hot water from LCGT system. We look forward to contribute the policy for Renewable Portfolio Standards(RPS) by using LCGT power system.
