  • Many industrialized countries are confronted with a difficulty about reuse of closed waste landfill. facilities. Especially, the demand of closed waste landfill maintenance and reuse nearby urban area has been increased, because of the shortage of usable land and extend of urban area. For the safe reuse of closed waste landfill, the most important check point is the effect of waste landfill on environment abound them. However, the non-sanitary closed waste landfill generally have no leachate lining system, therefore, the in-situ lining system such as sheet-pile, and vertical slurry wall etc. was needed to prevent the leachate outgoing from the waste landfill. In this paper present the case history of performance evaluation of vertical slurry wall by tracer tests.

  • Open dump of refuse causes groundwater and soil contamination by leachate and air pollution by LFG(Landfill Gas). In this paper, in order to perform a study about reduction of high leachate and LFG collection & control, using a 3-D, 2-phase, transient FDM model, the analysis of simultaneous flow of leachate and LFG has been carried out. In present numerical analysis it is assumed that 58 percents of LFG will evaporate to the ambient air and the recharge rate of a landfill be 12 percent of the average precipitation per year. All other data were excerpted at the point of 1995 when three refuse layers had been buried. From numerical analysis we concluded that maximum head value is approximately 26 mH2O<-에이치투오 (2.52 atm) in the center of the system and that installing venting trench plays an important role in landfill stabilization. Evan with the assumption of three layers constructed and low recharge rate applied, it is found that cumulative leachate and LFG productions will be 15.1 million 세제곱미터, 5.58 billion 세제곱미터, respectively after 40 years.

  • In this paper, the sensitivity of the leachate level is analyzed using the program HELP to reduce the high leachate level on the landfill. Hydraulic parameters analyzed were porosity, field capacity, wilting point and initial water content of cover soil and waste. Also, the influence of the difference between the initial water content and the field capacity on the leachate level in the landfill was analyzed. The results of the sensitivity analysis show that the increase of the porosity and the wilting point decreases the leachate level, while the increase of the field capacity and the hydraulic conductivity increases the leachate level. Major parameters to the change of the leachate level were the hydraulic conductivity in the case of cover soil and the porosity, the field capacity and the initial water content in the case of waste.

  • A seismic tomography using refraction waves is applied to provide information on depth of basement rocks and leachate distribution of the Noeun waste landfill site for the stage of preliminary environmental survey. This method is generally applied to civil and environmental areas. Three lines, apparently perpendicular to the potential leachate flow direction in this site, were installed to investigate the waste landfill site in pseudo three dimensional geometry. The results show that the site is composed of 3 layers and depth of basement becomes shallower at the upstream area of the landfill site than that of the downstream area. Moreover, some parts of the second layer and the basement at the down stream area are partially infiltrated by the leachate, probably related to the disturbed distribution of the different velocity materials within the second layer. In Conclusion, refraction wave tomography is found to be one of the most efficient way to investigate waste landfill site.

  • In this paper, the consolidation settlement of the landfill foundation during and after the period of disposal is analyzed using the program CONSOL which can include the influence of waste load and the leachate level into the analysis. the stability analysis of the embankment is also performed under the varied strength of foundation soil which results from the increase of effective stress due to consolidation of the clay under the landfill. The predicted settlement from CONSOL is compared with the field measured settlement. The results show that, when the leachate level increases with the increase of waste height, the increase of the effective stress of foundation clay is negligible and the stability of the slope of the landfill may not be secured as the disposal of the waste proceeds. Several complementary repairworks, e. g. the reduction of current slope of the fill, application of drain methods to stop or reduce !he leachate level are recommended. The predicted settlement consists moderately with the field measured settlement.

  • Hydrogeologic and hydrochemlcat conditions of two uncontrolled landfills without reliable underlying liners, leachate collection and treatment systems were compared. With similar weather conditions, spatial distribution and temporal variations of contaminants of concern and redox parameters were different for the two landfills. These differences are highly associated with ages and hydrogeologic settings of the landfills. Groundwater flow diverges from the Cheonan landfill while it converges to downgradient area in the Wonju landfill. Less permeable clayey silt layer or silty soil in the subsurface limited dispersion of leachate plume in the former landfill but highly permeable sandy soil with good lateral extent facilitated rapid plume dispersion in the latter landfill. In addition, hydraulic properties of the cover soil played a role in the different development of redox conditions, which resulted in significantly different concentrations of nitrates. Most problematic contaminants at downgradient wells of the landfills are ammonia and nitrate.

  • In order to determine the proper treatment of the finished landfill, it is important to predict the trend and stability of the major sources of contaminant in the landfill. In this paper the fate of contaminant sources in the landfill is studied from various literatures by grouping the contaminants into waste, leachate, and landfill gas. One example site referred is Nanji landfill which is one of the representative finished landfills in our country and the trend of contaminant sources in this landfill at current stage is discussed.

  • The dipole-dipol electrical resistivity survey was conducted to investigate the probable contamination of the Han river by leachate from the near-by Nanjido Landfill. The survey line of 3 km was set along the unpaved road toward the Han river. For the convenience of the field work, the survey line was divided into four segments. The complete two-dimensional resistivity section was constructed by connecting the inversion result of each segment. Gravity survey was also carried out along the profile parallel to the resistivity line. Near surface resistivity generally appeared to be of very low value in most part of the survey area and the boundary between the alluvium layer and underlying basement rocks is well discriminated on the resistivity section. These results agree well with those of the preceding Schlumberger depth sounding made at adjacent area by Lee and fun (1995). The variation of thickness of the alluvium layer delineated by gravity anomaly profile also correlates well with the result of the resistivity survey on the qualitative basis. The problem of contamination by leachate from the Nanjido Landfill, where various waste materials have been dumped without any proper treatment facilities, has been remains unsolved yet. Therefore, we present the most probable passages of leachate flow based on the survey results and have briefly discussed about measure for contamination control. Considering the thickness of alluvium and the possible existence of fractured zone, the middle point between 1st and 2nd landfill and the midst of 1st landfill are the most hazardous regions to make leachates flow into the Han river. Since large amounts of leachates are observed from the test wells located on the lines extending from the border between the 1st and 2nd landfill and the middle of the lst landfill, contamination protection barriers are strongly recommended near these regions.

  • The bioreactor type of landfill is to operate to enhance waste decomposition by continuously supplying water such as leachate and wastewater within the landfill, which helps increase the landfill gas production, which in turn prematurely stabilize the landfill. Recently, the environmental law for the operation of the bioreactor type of landfill has been enacted and thereafter the bioreactor type of landfill has been introduced for the first time in Korea to the SUDOKWON landfill site. In order to properly apply for bioreactor to the landfill, it is necessary to investigate the water distribution inside the landfill so that water recirculation should be optimally allocated with the zone of concern. In this regard, electrical resistivity survey has been suitably performed to delineate the water distribution in the landfill. That is, it has surveyed for long-term of period that the recirculation of leachate has been properly reflected from electrical resistivity within the second landfill of SUDOKWON landfill site. As a result, the electrical resistivity immediately corresponded to the variation of the extent of the seasonal temperature dynamics. From this, a calibratrion could be accomplished by correlating between temperature and electrical resistivity obtained from this study that can be applicable for optimally monitoring to keep the ideal operating condition for the bioreactor type of landfill.

  • Among the various geophysical approaches to identify the leakage of leachate with conductivity variation, conventional electrical resistivity survey has been mainly used at waste landfill. We adopted small-loop electromagnetic (EM) survey using multi-frequencies in parallel with electrical resistivity survey to delineate the leakage of leachate through the shallow soil layer at a waste landfill in Jeju Island, and also with self-potential monitoring to detect the streaming potential produced by the movement of leachate. There were no evidences of leakage from waste landfill according to the results of the electrical resistivity survey and SP monitoring, and it was also true from the results of water quality analysis at stream around waste landfill periodically. On the other hand, the results of one-dimensional inversion of spatially-filtered small-loop EM survey data showed the anomalous zone of low resistivity with depth both around and inner waste landfill.
