This paper investigated the spatial variations of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations for 38 watersheds in Pennsylvania using 7 years of hydroclimatic and water quality data. Watersheds with higher percentage of urban and agricultural land uses exhibited larger variations of nutrient concentrations than forested watersheds. N and P concentrations were strongly associated with agricultural and urban land uses, respectively. The principle component analysis identified three components - land use and topography related, hydroclimate related factors, and size. Results of partial redundancy analysis showed the joint effect of climate, land cover, and topographic variables for explaining 28.1% of the variance of nitrogen concentrations and a pure effect of land cover for explaining 41.8% of total variance of P concentrations. The geographical pattern of statewide nutrient concentrations demonstrated a strong spatial gradient; low concentration in northwestern PA and high concentrations in southeastern PA. This pattern is associated with combined effects of hydroclimate, land use, topography, and water quality at the regional scale.

Three types of land use were investigated to describe the effect of land use on both surface and ground water quality. Typical land uses of a grazing pasture, Sudan grass field and paddy in Kangwon province were selected and flumes and monitoring wells were installed. Land managements were carefully monitored, water samples were collected periodically and analyzed with respect to nitrate, TP and TKN at a laboratory of Kangwon Provincial Institute of Health and Environment from August, 1993 to May, 1994. Runoff from the pasture was formed mostly with seeping subsurface flow in the lower areas of the pasture. A few overland flows were observed during heavy storms, and when it occurred, runoff increased sharply. For the Sudan grass field, runoff was formed with overland flow. Nitrate concentration in runoff from both land uses seemed not affected by runoff and ranged from 0.241 to 4.137mg'/1. TP and TKN concentrations from the pasture were affected by overland flow. When overland flow occurred, TP and TKN concentrations abruptly increased to 5.726 and 12.841mg/1, respectively, from less than 1.0mg/l. However, these concentrations from the Sudan grass field were quite stable ranging from 0.191 to 0.674mg/l for TP and 0A70 and 1.650mg/l for TKN. Nitrate concentration was significantly affected by land use(Sudan grass field) and the concentration increase reached about 2mg/l per lOOm ground water flow. Nitrate concentration from a well located in the middle of rice fields also was significantly higher than that measured from a well located relatively undisturbed mountain toe area. TP and TKN concentrations in shallow ground water affected by the depth of the monitoring wells. The deeper the monitoring wells, the less TP and TKN concentrations were measured.
Monitoring data of 48 agricultural irrigation reservoirs from 1999 to 2004 was analyzed for water quality characteristics including biochemical oxygen demand $(BOD_5)$, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chl-${\alpha}$. Land uses of the watersheds associated with these reservoirs were determined for residential, forest, upland, paddy and miscellaneous, and regressed against water quality characteristics. Correlation analysis showed that forest land use was negatively correlated with all the water quality characteristics implying it's beneficial effects in water quality perspectives. Other land uses including residential, upland, and paddy generally illustrated positive correlation with water quality characteristics, which indicates most human activities of the watershed could degrade water quality of the receiving water bodies. Paddy land use partially contributed to the water quality degradation in contrast to the previous studies. It might be attributed to the relatively clean water quality of the study area, where even slight pollutant loading could degrade sensitively water quality. Further investigation is recommended for the effect of proximity as well as land use portions on the water quality of receiving water body.
Soil aggregates, resulting from physico-chemical and biological interactions, are important to understand carbon dynamics and material transport in soils. The objective of this study is to investigate stable macro-aggregate (> 0.25mm diameter) in wet sieving (SM) and their relation to soil properties in 15 sites. The clay contents of soils were ranged from 1% to 33%, and their land uses included bare and cultivated lands of annual upland crops, orchard, and grass. Undisturbed 3 inch cores with five replicates were sampled at topsoil (i.e., 0- to 10-cm depth), for analyzing SM and physico-chemical properties, after in situ measurement of air permeability. SM of sandy soils, with clay content less than 2%, was observed as 0%. Except the sandy soils, SM of soils mainly depended on land uses, showing 27%~35% in soils with annual plants such as vegetable and corn, 51% in orchard, and 75% in grass. This sequence of SM is probably due to the different strength of soil disturbance like tillage with different land uses. SM had significant correlation with cation exchange capacity, organic matter content, sand, clay, silt, bulk density, and exchangeable potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg), whereas fluctuating properties with fertilization such as pH, EC, and water soluble phosphorus weren't significantly correlated to the SM. Particularly, exchangeable calcium (Ca) had significant relation with SM, only except soils with oversaturating Ca. This study, therefore, suggested that SM could perceive different land uses and the change of soil properties in soils, necessarily considering soil textures and Ca over-saturation.
Total forest land in Bangladesh is about 2.5 million hectare which is 17% of total land area. Bangladeshi forest is mainly classified into three categories- 1) Hill forest 2) Sal forest and 3) Mangroves. This forest land area is decreasing day by day. But in past decayed due to some policies, the total forest land area is increasing slowly. By this planning both government and the local people in the community are being benefited. This paper mainly discussed about the past, present and future trend of forest condition, forest land uses, sustainable forest planning and forest management.

Time is regarded as an essential feature of land information enabling to track historical landmarks of land uses, ownerships, and taxations based on cadastral maps. Object-oriented temporal modeling helps to simulate and imitate time-varying cadastral data in a chronological and persistent manner. The aim of study is to analyze the role of temporal cadastre tracing footprints of foregoing events in response to various needs and demands associated with historical information of cadastral transactions. In this paper, temporal cadastral object model (TCOM) is proposed to delineate object version history. As an evidence of a new approach and conceptual idea for the importance of temporal cadastre, a part of spatio-temporal processes is illustrated to explain major changes of cadastral map. The feasibility and application of the approach is confirmed by proof-of-concept of temporal cadastre in land information management.
Because shore(ship) to ship(shore) communication service via INMARSAT pay expensive cost, satellite service typically use two stage service that land users dial up LES(Land Earth Station) for sending or receiving message. In order to send and receive message, land users must maintain online state with LES on dedicated line. Also, two stage INMARSAT communication service must consume long time that processes step by step. In case of large company, they have own communication system, but small companys communicate simple messages with only telex. This paper describes the design and implementation of an integrated communication services via INMARSAT-C. This system uses inexpensive INMARSAT-C for transmission between ship and land. Because this system provides web and E-Mail interface, users send and receive messages easily and quickly. This system provides most users with inexpensive and easy communication facilities between ship and land.
In recent years, the planning of livable communities has emerged as a new paradigm. The concept of livable communities is related to both the spatial balance of working, playing, and living and the promotion of green modes of transportation, such as walking and biking. This study uses a disaggregate travel survey conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Area in 2006. I applied a multi-level random intercept logit model to estimate the effects of land-use characteristics on the choice of green modes, holding a traveler's socio-demographic characteristics constant. The empirical results show that higher density and more mixed land-use development encourages people to walk and bike even when individuals have the same socio-economic characteristics. This paper demonstrates that land-use planning by itself can play a role in the creation of livable cities and the decline of greenhouse gas production.

It is important to consider the effects of land-use changes on surface runoff, stream flow, and groundwater recharge. Expansion of urban areas significantly impacts the environment in terms of ground water recharge, water pollution, and storm water drainage. Increase of impervious area due to urbanization leads to an increase in surface runoff volume, contributes to downstream flooding and a net loss in groundwater recharge. Assessment of the hydrologic impacts or urban land-use change traditionally includes models that evaluate how land use change alters peak runoff rates, and these results are then used in the design of drainage systems. Such methods however do not address the long-term hydrologic impacts of urban land use change and often do not consider how pollutants that wash off from different land uses affect water quality. L-THIA (Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment) is an analysis tool that provides site-specific estimates of changes in runoff, recharge and non point source pollution resulting from past or proposed land-use changes. It gives long-term average annual runoff for a land use configuration, based on climate data for that area. In this study, the environmental and hydrological impact from the urbanized basin had been examined with GIS L-THIA in Korea.
In recent years, urban development has expanded rapidly in Nawabshah City of Pakistan. A major effect associated with this population trend is transformation of the landscape from natural cover types to increasingly impervious urban land. The core objective of this study are to provide time-series information to define and measure the urban land cover changes of Nawabshah, Pakistan between the years 1992 and 2002, and to examine related urbanization impacts on air quality of the study area. Two multi-temporal Landsat images acquired in 1992 and 2002 together with standard topographical maps to measure land cover changes were used in this study. The image processing and data manipulation were conducted using algorithms supplied with the ERDAS Imagine software. An unsupervised classification approach, which uses a minimum spectral distance to assign pixels to clusters, was used with the overall accuracy ranging from 84 percent to 92 percent. Land cover statistics demonstrate that during the study period (1992-2002) extensive transformation of barren and vegetated lands into urban land have taken place in Nawabshah City. Results revealed that land cover changes due to urbanization has not only contaminated the air quality of the study area but also raised the health concerns for the local residents.
