  • This study is to evaluate the tool life of portable beveler which have various cooling system. It was compared with 3 different bevelers which has each other cooling system. Beveler A has no cooling system, beveler B has the cooling system for only inside of body, and beveler C has the cooling system for both the cutter and inside of body. The temperature of beveler A cutter surface had been continuously increasing as processing, but the rising tendency of temperature of beveler B cutter surface has slightly changed. In case of beveler C, the temperature is maintained. The tool life of beveler C is about 105m which is around 400% of beveler A(25m), and around 130% of beveler B(80m).

  • This study investigates the impact of enhanced regional meteorological fields on improvement of wind energy forecasting accuracy in the southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula. To clarify the effect of detailed surface boundary data and application of analysis nudging technique on simulated meteorological fields, several WRF simulations were carried out. Case_LT, which is a simulation with high resolution terrain height and land use data, shows the most remarkable accuracy improvement along the shoreline mainly due to modified surface characteristics such as albedo, roughness length and thermal inertia. Case_RS with high resolution SST data shows accurate SST distributions compared to observation data, and they led to change in land and sea breeze circulation. Case_GN, grid nudging applied simulation, also shows changed temperature and wind fields. Especially, the application of grid nudging dominantly influences on the change of horizontal wind components in comparison with vertical wind component.

  • Soil moisture, through its dominance in the exchange of energy and moisture between the land and atmosphere, plays a crucial role in influencing atmospheric circulation. To identify the crucial role, it is a common agreement that knowledge of land surface processes and development of remote sensing techniques are of great important scientific issues. This research uses TRMM satellite C band (10.65 GHz) data to retrieve soil moisture on the Tibetan Plateau in Mainland China. Two retrieval schemes that are implemented include the t-(J) model and the R model. The latter one is developed based on a land surface process and radiobrightness (R) model for bare soil and vegetated terrain. Compared with the in situ ground measurements, the soil moisture retrieved from the R model and the t-(J) model with vegetation information obviously appear more accurate than that derived from bare soil model. Retrieved soil moisture contents from the two inversion models, R model and t-(J) model, have a similar trend, but the former appears to be superior in terms of correlation coefficient and bias compared with in situ data. In the future, we will apply the R model with the TRMM 10.65 GHz brightness temperature to monitor long-term soil moisture variation over Tibet Plateau.

  • To proactively manage climate risk, near-term climate predictions on annual to decadal time scales are of great interest to various communities. This study evaluates the near-term climate prediction skills in East Asia with DePreSys4 retrospective decadal predictions. The model is initialized every November from 1960 to 2020, consisting of 61 initializations with ten ensemble members. The prediction skill is quantitatively evaluated using the deterministic and probabilistic metrics, particularly for annual mean near-surface temperature, land precipitation, and sea level pressure. The near-term climate predictions for May~September and November~March averages over the five years are also assessed. DePreSys4 successfully predicts the annual mean and the five-year mean near-surface temperatures in East Asia, as the long-term trend sourced from external radiative forcing is well reproduced. However, land precipitation predictions are statistically significant only in very limited sporadic regions. The sea level pressure predictions also show statistically significant skills only over the ocean due to the failure of predicting a long-term trend over the land.

  • Over the North East Asia, extreme anomalous precipitation were observed in 2013 and 2014. During 2013 summer the precipitation was found to be higher (two standard deviation) than the climatological mean of the region; whereas during 2014, which was a borderline El Ni?o year, precipitation was found to be lower (one standard deviation). To understand the differences of these two anomalous years the Global/Regional Integrated Model system (GRIMs) has been used. The study found that low landsurface temperature and high sea-surface temperature over ocean caused a smaller land-sea contrast of surface temperature between East Asia and North West Pacific Ocean in 2014, which could have caused an eastward shift of mean monsoon circulation in that year compared to the circulation in 2013. Due to a change in the lower level circulation and wind field over East Asia the evaporation and moisture transport patterns became very different in those two years. In 2013, this study found high latent heat flux over Eastern China, which implies an increased surface evaporation over that region, and the moisture transported to the north by the mean monsoon circulation; whereas, there was no correlated transport of moisture to the North East Asia during 2014. The precipitable water over North East Asia has a stronger correlation with the latent heat flux over southern land region than that from Ocean region in the eastern side in both the years. A new approach is proposed to estimate the sub-grid scale hydrometeors from GRIMs, overestimated in the existing model.

  • We have estimated power generation potential in Korea following the recently announced EGS protocol. According to the protocol, we calculated the theoretical potential first, which assumes 30 year operation, minimum temperature being surface temperature+$80^{\circ}C$, depth range being from 3 km to 10 km. In this new assessment the in-land area was digitized by 1' by 1' blocks, which is much finer than suggestion of the protocol (5'by 5'). Thus estimated theoretical potential reaches 6,975 GWe which is 92 times of the total power generation capacity in 2010. In the estimation of technical potential, we limited the depth range down to 6.5 km, assumed recovery factor as 0.14 and also counted for temperature drawdown factor of $10^{\circ}C$ following the protocol. Accessible in-land area excluding steep mountains, residence and industrial region, wet area and others covers 40.7% of total area. Finally, we could come up with 19.6 GWe for technical potential, which would be 56 GWe if we do not account for the temperature drawdown factor. These are important results in that we made the first potential assessment for geothermal power generation.

  • In order to grasp physical characteristics of Ganajin Bay receiving the effluents from land, a comprehensive field surve)'has been conducted at the north of Wando and Gogeumdo in 2002. Water temperature was most high in September while most low in December. A high temperature in September was inferred to have caused by the dispersion of warm fresh water with favor of a dominant wind in autumn. However, salinity and sigma-t in situ was most low in September while most high in December. A low salinity (or density) in September turned out to reflect the influence of a dense rainfall in summer. Water temperature, salinity and density at the surface layer were lower than those at the bottom layer, except for December. Their horizontal profiles suggested the influence of effluents such as Tamjin River. Particularly, time series of water temperature acquired near the sluice and at the north channel of Wando tended to rise at the flood flow but fall at the ebb flow in accordance with the tide. The form ratio of the tide in the study area was $0.31\~0.32$ and the amplitude of the tide appeared to increase towards the west. Northeastward or southwestward flows prevailed in this area but the residual flows were all northeastward with a magnitude of $3\~4cm/s$.

  • In recent years, global warming has caused abnormal weather phenomena. Unusually cold climates have occurred all around the world, including cold waves in the Northeastern United States, Beijing, China, Southern India, and Pakistan, as well as floods in Chile, Kazakhstan, and Vietnam. China has been experiencing a nationwide heat wave annually since the year 2013, especially in the southern region. In this study, we used Landsat 8 OLI TIRS sensor images from four periods to analyze the characteristics of abnormal high temperature phenomena in Cixi-si, China. Land cover classification was performed using 10 bands of satellite imagery, and the surface temperature was extracted using the 10th thermal band. The results of the land cover classification of the fourth period show the changes of the time series quantitatively. The results of the surface temperature calculation provided both the average overall temperature and the average temperature of individual items. The temperature was found to be highest for buildings, followed by grassland, forest, agricultural land, water systems, and tidal flats in the same period.

  • Increase in Earth's surface temperature, higher rainfall intensity rate, and rapid changes in land cover are just some of the most evident effects of climate change. Flooding, and river sedimentation are two inevitable natural processes in our environment, and both issues poses great risks in the dam industry when not addressed properly. River sedimentation is a significant issue that causes reservoir deposition, and thus causes the dam to gradually lose its ability to store water. In this study, the long-term effects of climate change on the sediment discharge in Yongdam Dam watershed is analyzed through the utilization of SWAT, a semi-distributed watershed model. Based from the results of this study, an abrupt increase on the annual sediment inflow trend in Yongdam Dam watershed was observed; which may suggests that due to the effects of climate change, higher rainfall intensity, land use and land cover changes, the sedimentation rate also increased. An efficient sedimentation management should consider the increasing trend in sedimentation rate due to the effects of climate change.

  • The main purpose of this research is to discuss the urban heat island which will be caused by urbanization, especially by the construction of new town on a wide green zone. Over the last ten years, five new towns have been developed around the Seoul metropolitan area. However these new towns become bedroom communities and create traffic problems between Seoul and its surrounding areas because of an increase in population and a lack of roads and other infrastructures. The construction of another such new town is under consideration in the Pan-gyo area. But it is important that Pan-gyo remains a wide green zone. Many studies show that green space can play an important role in improving urban eco-meteorological, ameliorative capability and air hygiene. The objective of this study is to analyze the urban heat islands of Bund-Dang Si which was constructed in 1996 and of the Pan-Gyo area planned as new town. To investigate the local thermal environment and its negative effects caused by change of the land use type and urbanization we used LANDSAT TM images for extraction of urban surface temperature according to change of land use over 15 years. These data were analyzed together with digital land use and topographic data. As a study result, we found that the thermal island of this area from 1985 to 1999 rapidly increased with a difference of mean temperature of more than 12'E. Before construction of Bun-Dang Si the temperature of this area was the same as the forest, but during the new town construction in 1991, an urban heat island developed. The temperature of forest with a size of over 50% of the investigation area was lowest, which leads us to conclude that the forest cools the urban and its surroundings. The mean temperature of the residential and commercial area is more than +4.5$^{\circ}C$ higher then forest, so this method of land use is the main factor increasing the urban heat island. Urban heat islands and green space play an important role in urban wind systems, i.e. Thermal Induced Air Exchange and Structural Wind Circulation, because of their special properties with regard to energy balance between constructed urban and land. The skill to allocate land use types in urban areas is a very important planning device to reduce air pollution and induce the fresh cold air from green space. An urban climatic experiment featuring a numerical wind simulation study to show the air corridor will be published in a following research paper.
