  • This study is to estimate COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) daily land surface temperature (LST) of Korea Peninsula from 15 minutes interval COMS LST (COMS LST-15) satellite data. Using daily observed LST data of Automated Agriculture Observing System (AAOS) 11 stations from January 2013 to May 2015, the COMS daily LST was compared and validated. For the representative time for daily mean LST value from COMS LST-15, the time of 23 : 45 and 0:00 showed minimum deviations with AAOS daily LST. The time zone from 23 : 45 to 1:15 and from 7 : 30 to 9 : 45 showed high determination coefficient (R2) of 0.88 and 0.90 respectively. The daily COMS LST by averaging COMS LST-15 of the day showed R2 of 0.83. From the 5 cases of results, the COMS daily LST could be extracted from the average LST by using 15 minutes data from 7 : 30 to 9 : 45.

  • The land surface temperature (LST) derived from the meteorological satellite can be used to investigate the urban heat island (UHI) and its temporal variations. In this study, we developed LST retrieval algorithm from MTSAT-1R by means of a statistical regression analysis from radiative transfer simulations using MODTRAN 4 for a wide range of atmospheric, satellite viewing angle (SVA) and lapse rate conditions. 535 sets of thermodynamic initial guess retrieval (TIGR) were used for the radiative transfer simulations. Sensitivity and intercomparison results showed that the algorithm, developed in this study, estimated the LST with a similar bias and root mean square errors to that of other algorithms. The magnitude, spatial extent, and seasonal and diurnal variations of the UBI of Korean peninsula were well demonstrated by the LST derived from MTSAT-1R data. In general, the temporal variations of UHI clearly depend on the weather conditions and geographic environment of urban.

  • Satellite-based land surface temperature (LST) has been used as one of the major parameters in various climate and environmental models. Especially, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST is the most widely used satellite-based LST product due to its spatiotemporal coverage (1 km spatial and sub-daily temporal resolutions) and longevity (> 20 years). However, there is an increasing demand for LST products with finer spatial resolution (e.g., 10-250 m) over regions such as urban areas. Therefore, various methods have been proposed to produce high-resolution MODIS-like LST less than 250 m (e.g., 100 m). The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of recent research trends and challenges for the downscaling of MODIS LST. Based on the recent literature survey for the past decade, the downscaling techniques classified into three groups-kernel-driven, fusion-based, and the combination of kernel-driven and fusion-based methods-were reviewed with their pros and cons. Then, five open issues and challenges were discussed: uncertainty in LST retrievals, low thermal contrast, the nonlinearity of LST temporal change, cloud contamination, and model generalization. Future research directions of LST downscaling were finally provided.

  • This study is to estimate the spatial soil moisture using multiple linear regression model (MLRM) and 15 minutes interval Land Surface Temperature (LST) data of Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS). For the modeling, the input data of COMS LST, Terra MODIS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), daily rainfall and sunshine hour were considered and prepared. Using the observed soil moisture data at 9 stations of Automated Agriculture Observing System (AAOS) from January 2013 to May 2015, the MLRMs were developed by twelve scenarios of input components combination. The model results showed that the correlation between observed and modelled soil moisture increased when using antecedent rainfalls before the soil moisture simulation day. In addition, the correlation increased more when the model coefficients were evaluated by seasonal base. This was from the reverse correlation between MODIS NDVI and soil moisture in spring and autumn season.

  • A quasi depth-varying mathematical model for wind-generated circulation in coastal areas, expressed in terms of the depth-averaged horizontal velocity components and free surface elevation was validated and used to understand the diurnal circulation process. The wind velocity is considered as a dominant factor for driving the current. In this paper, three-dimensional numerical experiments that included the land topography were used to investigate the mesoscale air flaw over the coastal regions. The surface temperature of the inland area was determined through a surface heat budget consideration with the inclusion of a layer of vegetation.A series of numerical experiments were then carried out to investigate the diurnal response of the air flaw and wind-generated circulation to various types of surface inhomogeneities.

  • This study analyzed the relationship of land cover type, urban temperature in Gimhae city, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea. Date were used for land cover map, MODIS LST, and detailed temperature data on the Korean Peninsula based on RCP between 2000 and 2010. The correlation between urban area and surface temperature was 0.417, 0.512 for agricultural area and -0.607 for forest area. The correlation between surface temperature and air temperature was 0.301. The relationship with air temperature was analyzed as 0.275 for urban area, agriculture area 0.226, forest area 0.350. Urban and agricultural areas showed increased surface and air temperature as the area increased, while forest areas showed opposite improvements. In structural equation models, urban and agricultural areas had direct effects on the rise of surface temperature, whle forest areas had direct effects on the reduction of air temperature. In the future, it is necessary to use measured temperature data near the surface to understand the relationship between surface temperature and temperature according to the changes in spatial characteristics, which will prepare measures for urban heat island mitigation at the level of urban and environmental planning.

  • In this study, surface temperature which was extracted from Landsat TM band 6 was compared and analyzed with the AWS(Automatic Weather System) observation data for studying urban heat environment properties with possibility of remote sensing data application. In order to verification of the distribution properties of urban surface temperature, correlation analysis between surface temperature and NDVI, the distribution properties of urban surface temperature by land use/cover patterns were carried out by GIS spatial analysis techniques. The results presented that the spatial distribution of urban surface temperature was very different depending on various land use/cover patterns of surrounding areas. Also there was the reverse linear relationship between surface temperature and NDVI. These results will be worked as one of the major factors for environmentally sustainable urban planning considering the characteristics of weather environments in the near future.

  • In order to analyze the Land Surface Temperature (LST) in metropolitan area including Seoul, Landsat and MODIS land surface temperature, Automatic Weather Station (AWS) temperature, digital elevation model and landuse are used. Analysis method among the Landsat and MODIS LST and AWS temperature is basic statistics using by correlation coefficient, root-mean-square error and linear regression etc. Statistics of Landsat and MODIS LST are a correlation coefficient of 0.32 and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 4.61 K, respectively. And statistics of Landsat and MODIS LST and AWS temperature have the correlations of 0.83 and 0.96 and the RMSE of 3.28 K and 2.25 K, respectively. Landsat and MODIS LST have relatively high correlation with AWS temperature, and the slope of the linear regression function have 0.45 (Landsat) and 1.02 (MODIS), respectively. Especially, Landsat 5 has lower correlation about 0.5 or less in entire station, but Landsat 8 have a higher correlation of 0.5 or more despite of lower match point than other satellites. Landsat 7 have highly correlation of more than 0.8 in the center of Seoul. Correlation between satellite LSTs and AWS temperature with landuse (urban and rural) have 0.8 or higher. Landsat LST have correlation of 0.84 and RMSE of more than 3.1 K, while MODIS LST have correlation of more than 0.96 and RMSE of 2.6 K. Consequently, the difference between the LSTs by two satellites have due to the difference in the optical observation and detection the radiation generated by the difference in the area resolution.

  • The time shift processing of ground measured surface temperature with the meteorological variables has no evaluated function. We introduce new evaluating function. To use this evaluating function, the algorithm of time-shift processing will be able to be reliable and get error-bar for all moving measured point's data. We will finally obtain the area averaged surface temperature by land observation.
