MODFLOW or FEFLOW: A Case Study of Groundwater Model Selection for the Upper Waikato Catchment, New Zealand

  • Groundwater in the Waikatoregion is a valuable resource for agriculture, water supply, forestry and industries. The 434,000 ha study area comprises the upper Waikato River catchment from the outflow of Lake Taupo (New Zealand's largest lake) through to Lake Karapiro (a man-made hydro lake with high recreational value) (Figure 1). Water quality in the area is naturally high. However, there are indications that this quality is deteriorating as a result of land use intensification and deforestation. Compounding this concern for decision makers is the lag time between land use changes and the realisation of effects on groundwater and surface water quality. It is expected that the effects of land use changes have not yet fully manifested, and additional intensification may take decadesto fully develop, further compounding the deterioration. Consequently, Environment Waikato (EW) have proposed a programme of work to develop a groundwater model to assist managing water quality and appropriate policy development within the catchment. One of the most important and critical decisions of any modelling exercise is the choice of the modelling platform to be used. It must not inhibit future decision making and scenario exploration and needs to allow as accurate representation of reality as feasible. With this in mind, EW requested that two modelling platforms, MODFLOW/MT3DMS and FEFLOW, be assessed for their ability to deliver the long-term modelling objectives for this project. The two platforms were compared alongside various selection criteria including complexity of model set-up and development, computational burden, ease and accuracy of representing surface water-groundwater interactions, precision in predictive scenarios and ease with which the model input and output files could be interrogated. This latter criteria is essential for the thorough assessment of predictive uncertainty with third-party software, such as PEST. This paper will focus on the attributes of each modelling platform and the comparison of the two approaches against the key criteria in the selection process. Primarily due to the ease of handling and developing input files and interrogating output files, MODFLOW/MT3DMS was selected as the preferred platform. Other advantages and disadvantages of the two modelling platforms were somewhat balanced. A preliminary regional groundwater numerical model of the study area was subsequently constructed. The model simulates steady state groundwater and surface water flows using MODFLOW and transient contaminant transport with MT3DMS, focussing on nitrate nitrogen (as a conservative solute).   • 지표와 대기간의 에너지 및 수문기상인자들의 교환에 대한 이해는 수자원분야의 연구에 있어서 기초라 할 수 있으며 이를 위하여 Land Surface Mode(LSM)을 활용한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. Noah Land Surface Model (Noah LSM)은 에너지 방정식과 물수지 방정식을 기반으로 한 지면모형으로 수문기상인자들에 대한 모의가 가능하다. 국외에는 Noah LSM을 이용한 다양한 연구사례들이 있으나, 국내에서는 적용사례가 매우 부족하며, 특히 단독으로 Noah LSM을 적용한 사례는 전무한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 Noah LSM의 국내 적용성을 평가하기 위해 해남(HFK)과 광릉(GDK) Korea Flux Network (KoFlux)에서 제공하는 자료를 입력자료로 활용하여 모형 결과를 산출하고, 순 복사량, 잠열, 현열의 결과를 관측자료와 비교 검증하였다. 모형 결과와 관측치를 비교한 결과 회귀분석에서의 상관계수 값이 각 인자 별로 해남은 0.83~099, 광릉은 0.64~0.99로 신뢰할 만한 수준인 것으로 나타났다.

  • A simulator is proposed in this paper for predicting the RF signal level after propagating over sea and land surfaces. Various sea and land types and transmit/receive antenna patterns, as well as the locus of the transmit antenna, are considered for this simulator. At first, microwave reflection characteristics of various sea surfaces have been computed, based on an empirical formula which is developed in this study for the relation between the sea surface roughness and wind speed. Then, microwave reflections from land surfaces such as forests, agricultural areas, and bare surfaces, are computed using the first-order vector radiative transfer theory. Finally, the signal paths over sea and land surfaces are found using the ray tracing technique and the digital elevation model, and the signal level received by a receiving antenna is computed by the using the reflection coefficients of sea and land surfaces and the signal paths.

Long-term Sediment Discharge Analysis in Yongdam Dam Watershed due to Climate Change

  • Increase in Earth's surface temperature, higher rainfall intensity rate, and rapid changes in land cover are just some of the most evident effects of climate change. Flooding, and river sedimentation are two inevitable natural processes in our environment, and both issues poses great risks in the dam industry when not addressed properly. River sedimentation is a significant issue that causes reservoir deposition, and thus causes the dam to gradually lose its ability to store water. In this study, the long-term effects of climate change on the sediment discharge in Yongdam Dam watershed is analyzed through the utilization of SWAT, a semi-distributed watershed model. Based from the results of this study, an abrupt increase on the annual sediment inflow trend in Yongdam Dam watershed was observed; which may suggests that due to the effects of climate change, higher rainfall intensity, land use and land cover changes, the sedimentation rate also increased. An efficient sedimentation management should consider the increasing trend in sedimentation rate due to the effects of climate change.

동남극 윌크스랜드 대륙대의 마이오세 중-후기 동안 생물기원 오팔 생산과 고기후 변화(IODP Exp 318 Site U1359) (Biogenic Opal Production and Paleoclimate Change in the Wilkes Land Continental Rise (East Antarctica) during the Mid-to-late Miocene (IODP Exp 318 Site U1359))

  • A 450 m-long sediment section was recovered from Hole U1359D located at the eastern levee of the Jussieau submarine channel on the Wilkes Land continental rise (East Antarctica) during IODP Expedition 318. The age model for Hole U1359D was established by paleomagnetic stratigraphy and biostratigraphy, and the ages of core-top and core-bottom were estimated to be about 5 Ma and 13 Ma, respectively. Biogenic opal content during this period varied between 3% and 60%. In the Southern Ocean, high biogenic opal content generally represents warm climate characterized by the increased light availability due to the decrease of sea-ice distribution. The surface water productivity change in terms of biogenic opal content at about 10.2 Ma in the Wilkes Land continental rise was related to the development of Northern Component Water. After about 10.2 Ma, more production of Northern Component Water in the North Atlantic caused to increase heat transport to the Southern Ocean, resulting in the enhanced diatom production. Miocene isotope events (Mi4~Mi7), which are intermittent cooling intervals during the Miocene, appeared to be correlated to the low biogenic opal contents, but further refinement was required for precise correlation. Biogenic opal content decreased abruptly during 6 Ma to 5.5 Ma, which most likely corresponds to the Messinian salinity crisis. Short-term variation of biogenic opal content was related to the extent of sea-ice distribution associated with the location of Antarctic Polar Front that was controlled by glacial-interglacial paleoclimate change, although more precise dating and correlation will be necessary. Diatom production in the Wilkes Land continental rise increased during the interglacial periods because of the reduced sea-ice distribution and the southward movement of Antarctic Polar Front.

Groundwater and Surface Water Hydrology in the Lake Rotorua Catchment, New Zealand, and Community Involvement with Lake Water Quality Restoration

  • Water quality in Lake Rotorua, New Zealand, deteriorated since the 1960s because of excessive phytoplankton growths due principally to increasing nitrogen and phosphorus in the lake waters. Nutrient concentrations in eight of the nine major streams feeding Lake Rotorua have increased since 1965. The groundwater system has a key role in the hydrology of the Lake Rotorua catchment and the groundwater system is probably the control on the time delay between intensification of agricultural land use and response of surface water quality. All major, and many minor streams, in the catchment are fed by springs. Two lithological units are most important to groundwater flow in the Lake Rotorua catchment: Mamaku Ignimbrite, erupted in about 200,000 years ago and Huka Formation sediments which filled the caldera left by the Mamaku Ignimbrite eruption. Rainfall recharge to groundwater in the groundwater catchment of Lake Rotorua is estimated as approximately 17300 L/s. A calibrated steady-state groundwater flow model estimates that approximately 11100 L/s of this flow discharges into streams and then into the lake and the balance travels directly to Lake Rotorua as groundwater discharge through the lake bed. Land use has impacted on groundwater quality. Median Total Nitrogen (TN) values for shallow groundwater sites are highest for the dairy land use (5.965 mg/L). Median TN values are also relatively high for shallow sites with urban-road and cropping land uses (4.710 and 3.620 mg/L, respectively). Median TN values for all other uses are in the 1.4 to 1.5 mg/L range. Policy development for Lake Rotorua includes defining regional policies on water and land management and setting an action plan for Lake Rotorua restoration. Aims in the action plan include: definition of the current nutrient budget for Lake Rotorua, identification of nutrient reduction targets and identification of actions to achieve targets. Current actions to restore Lake Rotorua water quality include: treatment of Tikitere geothermal nitrogen inputs to Lake Rotorua, upgrade of Rotorua City sewage plant, new sewage reticulation and alum dosing in selected streams to remove phosphorus.

  • A coupled general circulation model (GCM) of the global atmosphere, oceans and lands is used for finding the future climate at times of doubled carbon dioxide concentration (DCDC) of the atmosphere. Two runs of the model were made in order to find the future change. Global changes at times of DCDC may be characterized by a global warmig of $1.4^{\circ}C$, a $3\%$ global precipitation increase, and an increase in the surface available water (SAW) over the global land among others. The estimated increase in SAW over the land implies that river discharge is likely to increase with increased chance of severe weather as a result of the future global warming.

모형시험과 유한요소해석에서 비탈면 강우의 침투량 비교 (Comparison of Infiltration Rate of Slope in Model Test and Finite Element Analysis)

  • The causes of landslides are dependant on rainfall events and the soil characteristics of a slope. For the conventional slope stability, the slope stability analysis has been carried out assuming the saturated soil theory. But, in order to clearly explain a proper soil slope condition by rainfall, the research should be performed using the unsaturated soil mechanism suitable for a soil slope in the field. In the study, by using two major categories of soils in Korea, such as granite and gneiss weathered soils, landslide model test and finite element method have been compared with the difference of seepage and soil stability analysis. The hydraulic conductivity of gneiss weathered soil is slower than that of granite weathered soil, and the gneiss weathered soil contains much finer soils than the granite weathered soil. It was confirmed that the instability of the slope was progressing slowly due to the slow rate of volumetric water content of the surface layer.

MODIS NDVI와 Morton 증발산량의 관계를 이용한 공간증발산량 산정 기법 연구 - 충주댐유역을 대상으로 - (Estimation of Spatial Evapotranspiration using the Relationship between MODIS NDVI and Morton ET - For Chungjudam Watershed -)

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate monthly Morton evapotranspiration (ET) using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from MODIS satellite images. Morton ET for land surface conditions was evaluated by using daily meteorological data, and the monthly averaged Morton ETs for each land cover were compared with the monthly NDVIs of three years (2000-2002) at Chungjudam Watershed. There was a high correlation between monthly NDVI and Morton ET for the watershed with average coefficient of determination, 0.80. By comparing the MODIS NDVI ET with SLURP Morton ET, the SLURP ET was smaller than the MODIS NDVI ET. This was estimated from the consideration of soil moisture condition for the ET occurrence in the SLURP model, the limited information from the monthly NDVI values, and the errors from the derived regression equations.

지면 모형을 활용한 용수효율 평가 (Assessment of water use efficiency using land surface model)

  • 탄소 순환과 수문 순환의 관계를 이해하기 위해서는 효율적인 물 사용과 실제 물 사용 간의 비율로 정의되는 용수효율(Water Use Efficiency; WUE)을 정량화 하는 것이 필요하다. 특히 용수효율을 평가하기 위해서는 탄소 순환의 주요 인자인 총 1차 생산량(Gross Primary Productivity; GPP)과 순 1차 생산량(Net Primary Productivity; NPP)을 산정하는 것이 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 전 세계적으로 가장 많이 활용되고 있는 지면 모형 중 하나인 Community Land Model(CLM)을 활용하여 동아시아 지역에서의 GPP와 NPP를 산정하였다. 모형을 통해서 산정된 광역의 GPP와 NPP는 Flux tower에서 관측된 지점 자료를 활용하여 검증할 예정이다. 또한 지면 모형에서 획득한 동아시아 지역의 GPP와 NPP에 대한 공간 분포를 분석하여 탄소 순환 인자들에 대한 시공간적인 변화에 대하여 확인하고자 한다.
