  • To measure the precision of Soiltek$^{(R)}$ KA-1 spectrophotometric measurement of soil available phosphate, standard deviation, C;V, and relative sensitivity were investigated, comparing to Lancaster method. Available phosphate concentration measured by Soiltek$^{(R)}$ KA-1 spectrophotometric method was highly correlated with Lancaster method($r=0.998^{***}$) and the slop of regression equation was close to 1.0. There were no differences in standard deviation. CV, and relative sensitivity for soil available phosphate concentrations measured by two methods. Regarding to convenience of experimental procedure and instrumental operation, and time saving analysis, Soiltek$^{(R)}$ KA-1 spectrophotometric measurement for soil available phosphate is highly recommended.

  • To compare different methods for the determination of available soil P in the relationship between the soil P and plant uptake of P, rice and corn were cultivated in the pot filled with soils of different available P contents. The soils were taken from 20 rice fields and 20 upland soils. The available soil P were determined before the experiment by Olsen, Lancaster, Bray 1, Bray 2, Mehlich II and Calcium lactate methods and the correlations between the available soil P measured by different methods and the amount of P taken up by corn at 10 leaf stage and by rice at maximum tillering stage were investigated. In upland soils, the available P measured by all the methods was linearly regressed with high significance to the amount of P taken up by corn. The coefficients of determination($R^2$) in the regression equations ranged from 0.596(Calcium lactate method) to 0.891(Olsen method). In rice soils, the soil available P did not regressed by first-order to the amount of P taken up by rice plant, while Michaelis-Menten equation better explained the relationship between the two parameters. In the Michaelis-Menten equation the coefficients of determination for each analytical method ranged from 0.607(Mehlich II method) to 0.923(Lancaster method). Based upon these observations it is concluded that for testing of available P for corn soils Olsen, Bray 2 and Lancaster methods are equally superior to other methods. For rice soils Lancaster, Bray 1, and Bray 2 methods are better than others.

  • Soil testing is one of the best management practices for sustainable agriculture. Recently, as increasing soil testing needs, simplification of soil analytical procedure has been required. To determine recommendable multi-element extractant, the soil testing results of available phosphate and exchangeable cations between the conventional methods (Lancaster and 1M $NH_4OAc) and multi-element extraction methods such as Mehlich III, Modified Morgan and Kelowna methods were compared. There were highly significant correlation between the conventional methods and multi-element extraction methods (Mehlich III, Modified Morgan and Kelowna) for available phosphate and exchangeable K, Ca, Mg and Na. The coefficients of determination ($R^2) between available phosphate extracted by Lancaster method and multielement extraction methods were in the order of Mehlich III ($0.979^{***}$) > Kelowna ($0.977^{***}$) > Modified(Mod.). Morgan ($0.553^{***}$). For exchangeable cations, there were highly significant correlations between 1M $NH_4OAc method and Mehlich III, Mod. Morgan and Kelowna. However, exchangeable K, Ca and Mg by Mehlich III method were more highly correlated with conventional method than other methods. Therefore, Mehlich III extraction method could be recommended as a single extractant for simultaneous measurement using ICP in the analysis of avaliable phosphate and exchangeable cations.

  • Field test were conducted to select the best method for soil phosphorus test and to obtain the critical levels of each method for P fertilizer recommendations based on tobacco production. Truog method was recognized to be the mort suitable one for soil P test. N. Carolina, Bray No.1 and Olsen methods were followed in order. Bray No. 2 and Lancaster methods showed the least satisfaction. The critical levels of available P by lancaster, Bray No. 1, N. Carolina,01sen, and Truog methods were 55ppm, 32ppm, 21ppm, 19ppm, and 22ppm, respectively. Below the critical level a large yield response can be expected with 10kg $P_2O_5$/10a, above critical level little or no response is expected. In soils the more the initial available p, the more available P was carried over, while the more the total amount of silt and clay, the less the residual P was found. The increase in residual P by 10kg of $P_2O_5$ was greater than that of 5kg/10a. The chemical composition and the price of the cured leaf were not affected by the $P_2O_5$ application, indicating that the increase in the rate of $P_2O_5$ application would not exert on the quality of tobacco.

  • The present study has been undertaken to see if any proper measure be found for the determination of available phosphorus by chemical extraction on the basis of A-values as the standard. The results obtained are described as follows. 1. Since A-value of the samples under study showed a significant correlation with Fe-P at 1% level. The available phosphorus in the present paddy soils was considered to be affected by Fe-P. 2. Six methods for chemical extraction were not correlated with the determination of Fe-P, proving them inadequate for the quantitative measurement of available phosphorus. 3. Adequate method for extracting available phosphorus in paddy soils should rest on the measurement of the reduction intensity of Fe-P. The extractable intensity was estimated to be 270 ppm in average. 4. Bray No. 2-P showed significant correlation with Lancaster-P, Spurway-P, Truog-P, and (Ca+Al)-P at 5% level. Olsen-P and Lancaster-P indicated significant correlation with Al-P and Spurway-P with Ca-P respectively at 1% level.

  • Pot experiments were conducted from 1999 to 2001 to compare the different methods of available phosphorus (P) for estimation of biomass and P uptake by tomato and cucumber grown on different soils (25 soils for tomato and 8 soils for cucumber cultivation) collected from plastic film house of Chungbuk area. Supplementary experiment was conducted to estimate the relationship among several extraction methods of available P such as P adsorption, water extractable-P, Lancaster-P, Olsen-P, Bray No 1 and No 2-P, and Mehlich 1 and 3-P for a total of 71 soils that included 33 soils collected for tomato and cucumber cultivation and 38 soils taken from other sites of plastic film house. All the extraction methods of available phosphorus except P adsorption were mutually positive correlated with r ranging from 0.81 to 0.96 while the correlation coefficient between P adsorption and other methods ranged from -0.57 to -0.80. Phosphorus uptake by tomato plant applied with no fertilizer was significantly correlated with the available P extracted by different methods except P adsorption in all the experiments showing positive correlation coefficients from 0.49 to 0.76 in April, 1999, 0.53 to 0.71 in April, 2000, and 0.59 to 0.68 in October, 2000. Consequently relative amount of P uptake by tomato plant for all the experiments also significantly correlated with available P in soils showing correlation coefficients of r=0.64~0.73 (P<0.0000001) in the order of Mehlich 1-P > Mehlich 3-P > Lancaster-P. For tomato, critical concentrations of available P in soils estimated by Cate and Nelson split method were $1700mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Mehlich 3-P, $1,050mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Mehlich 1-P, and $95mg\;kg^{-1}$ for water extractable P. Also P uptake by cucumber plant was significantly correlated with Olsen-P, water extractable P, and Bray No 2-P with r value of 0.62, 0.59, and 0.51, respectively, in soils of no fertilization.

  • Objective: The study aimed at quantifying seasonal and spatial variations in availability and nutritive value of herbaceous vegetation on native pastures and supplement feedstuffs for domestic ruminants in Western Kenya. Methods: Samples of herbaceous pasture vegetation (n = 75) and local supplement feedstuffs (n = 46) for cattle, sheep, and goats were collected in 20 villages of three geographic zones (Highlands, Mid-slopes, Lowlands) in Lower Nyando, Western Kenya, over four seasons of one year. Concentrations of dry matter (DM), crude ash (CA), ether extract (EE), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), gross energy (GE), and minerals were determined. Apparent total tract organic matter digestibility (dOM) was estimated from in vitro gas production and proximate nutrient concentrations or chemical composition alone using published prediction equations. Results: Nutrient, energy, and mineral concentrations were 52 to 168 g CA, 367 to 741 g NDF, 32 to 140 g CP, 6 to 45 g EE, 14.5 to 18.8 MJ GE, 7.0 to 54.2 g potassium, 0.01 to 0.47 g sodium, 136 to 1825 mg iron, and 0.07 to 0.52 mg selenium/kg DM. The dOM was 416 to 650 g/kg organic matter but differed depending on the estimation method. Nutritive value of pasture herbage was superior to most supplement feedstuffs, but its value strongly declined in the driest season. Biomass yields and concentrations of CP and potassium in pasture herbage were highest in the Highlands amongst the three zones. Conclusion: Availability and nutritive value of pasture herbage and supplement feedstuffs greatly vary between seasons and geographical zones, suggesting need for season- and region-specific feeding strategies. Local supplement feedstuffs partly compensate for nutritional deficiencies. However, equations to accurately predict dOM and improved knowledge on nutritional characteristics of tropical ruminant feedstuffs are needed to enhance livestock production in this and similar environments.

  • Management of phosphorus availability in the plastic film house soils in Korea merits attention because salts have been accumulated for last decades due to the heavy application of fertilizers and intensive cropping practices. In an attempt to characterize the P availability, available phosphorus contents and electrical conductivity of the saturated extracts ($EC_e$) were measured for soils collected from the 169 plastic film houses in Kangwon-do. Soil phosphorus contents were analyzed by methods of Lancaster, Bray No. 1, Olsen, Truog, water extractable and saturation extracts. Phosphorus concentrations in the saturated extracts of the plastic film house soils ranged from 0.02 to $34mg\;L^{-1}$, with the average of $8mg\;L^{-1}$. The available $P_2O_5$ of the soils ranged from 136 to $3,689mg\;Kg^{-1}$, with the average of $1,261mg\;Kg^{-1}$. The water soluble $P_2O_5$ ranged from 2 to $118mg\;L^{-1}$, with the average of $39mg\;L^{-1}$. A significant correlation existed between saturation extract P (Y) and available $P_2O_5$ (X) [Y = -5.075 + 0.018X, $r=0.662^{***}$] indicating $1.0mg\;P\;L^{-1}$ of in the saturated extract was equivalent to $337mg\;Kg^{-1}$ of the available $P_2O_5$ by Lancaster method. Electrical conductivity of the saturated pastes ($EC_e$) was highly significantly correlated with EC (1:5), yielding the slope of 12.2 for the coarse textured plastic film house soils. Results of higher concentrations of available P in soil solution and dilution factor of 12.2 for $EC_e$ demonstrate that a special care must be taken in terms of fertilizer management and data interpretation for soils under this specific condition.

  • In this paper, we propose a vocabulary coverage improvement method for embedded continuous speech recognition (CSR) using a part-of-speech (POS) tagged corpus. We investigate 152 POS tags defined in Lancaster-Oslo-Bergen (LOB) corpus and word-POS tag pairs. We derive a new vocabulary through word addition. Words paired with some POS tags have to be included in vocabularies with any size, but the vocabulary inclusion of words paired with other POS tags varies based on the target size of vocabulary. The 152 POS tags are categorized according to whether the word addition is dependent of the size of the vocabulary. Using expert knowledge, we classify POS tags first, and then apply different ways of word addition based on the POS tags paired with the words. The performance of the proposed method is measured in terms of coverage and is compared with those of vocabularies with the same size (5,000 words) derived from frequency lists. The coverage of the proposed method is measured as 95.18% for the test short message service (SMS) text corpus, while those of the conventional vocabularies cover only 93.19% and 91.82% of words appeared in the same SMS text corpus.

  • NIR spectroscopy is newly developed tools determining the soil properties. Phosphorus in soil is one of the most difficult and time consuming elements to assess for plant needs. The calibration coefficient(R) of NIR method for total phosphorus by $HClO_4$ and $Na_2CO_3$ P was 0.91 and 0.88, and available phosphorus by Lancaster and Bray 1. extractant was 0.88 and 0.82. According to Williams guidelines for the calibration coefficient, NIR method could also be used for estimating total and available phosphorus if one performed optimal calibration for predicting soil properties. Applicability of NIR spectra, if improved accuracy, may allow the use of soil testing.
